My dad remembers this day. A Portsmouth fan who went up to the West Brom game, we had nothing to play for, we weren’t gonna get relegated but weren’t gonna get Europe either, mid-table finish. So when we heard news that Southampton were losing the Pompey fans were singing, to their own players “let them score, let them score” because a Baggies goal would send Southampton (our arch rivals) down. And when they did our fans went mental, shaking hands with Albion fans, cheering at their goal, etc. So we lost the battle to win the war basically

the fact that the bottom 4 teams were on 30+ points, and Norwich beforehand were out of the relegation zone, to end up being relegated, shows how competitive this season was, if not the league was back in these days.

30 points is a very weak amount btw

@@ewzinenhou9243 sure, but to have all teams above 30 is competitive. Usually theres a team or 2 in the mid to low 20s that are guaranteed down before the final game. but to not only have all 4 teams above 30, but none of the relegation spots decided means mid table was really competitive, otherwise, one or more of those relegated teams wouldve been in the 20s. Which checks out, only 8 points separated 16th place Portsmouth and 10th place Villa

For those coming to this video who maybe weren't born when this happened - or aren't old quite enough to remember the specifics - West Brom staying up meant they became the first team in Premier League history to avoid relegation after being bottom of the table on Christmas Day. No team in Premier League history had achieved that up to this point. It's since happened three times (Sunderland in 2014, Leicester in 2015, Wolves in 2023) but it's always important to remember the first.

I do miss the physicality, if only for the evenness of games. You can kinda run people over now by simply being faster/quicker but back then, you could use some steel to even it up.

yeah they did Middlesbrough 2-1 up concede a last gasp Stewart Downing equaliser, Everton same detail 2-1 up as a clock hits 90 concede a last minute Marcus Bent equaliser but the killer was the Villa game 20 minutes down 2-0 up but collapse in the second half and lose 3-2. Palace were just as guilty against Southampton the previous week 2-1 up against 10 men after Crouch got sent off but concede a last minute Higgingbotham equaliser.

West Brom Were The 1st Top Division Team In England To Stay Up After Being Bottom At Christmas Since 1991 And The 1st Since The Premier League Was Formed In 1992. Usually The Team At The Bottom Of The The Table At Christmas Gets Relegated But West Brom Will Always Be The 1st Premiership Team To Do It, Since It Was Formed In 1992. Sunderland, Leicester And Wolves Have Done It Since And The Following Year Leicester Went On To Win The League. It Doesn't Happen Too Often Though. Only 4 Teams Have Done It Since 1992 And They Were The 4.
