😂 OMG awesome listening to them tell about their development. Absolutely awesome. FFVI was the first game i owned along with FF Adventure. Absolutely loved those two games. FFII is also a favorite. My first Final Fantasy I ever played, and what made me fall in love with Goodness and Light was FFIV. Absolutely absorbed me into the fold at that point. Cecil was the epitome of my life. Then FF7 just solidified me. Then you have Xenogears. Man, Sakaguchi, thank you and everyone at Squaresoft for everything. You are what made my life worth living.

What an amazing interview! Such a privilege being able to hear all this... Although that mention of Yoshi P and his rings took me out. lmfao And Sakaguchi's joking slander about Nomura at 25:00 & Kitase at 29:26. I'm in tears. LOL I agree about FFVI's 'Searching for Friends' playing for Blackjack in XIV. I want to hear Soken's version of that track!

@@spellsnare Kitase is the overall brand manager, but wasn't THE player in VI nor is he it in VII, so entirely possible to get the ball rolling on some of that while VII is going. Though for sure you'll likely want a lot of the VII crew to be involved in the VI remake, so maybe just setting it up to start VI remake once VII remake is complete, there would be logistics and setup to do for that transition.

It was awesome seeing Sakaguchi back at Square Enix, even if it was just for a sit down talk about the series considering just how unamicable his exit was two decades ago. Together with some old cohorts and a fantastic host to keep it rolling, it was a nice look back on the franchise's early years. The only way it could have been greater is if they invited Hiroyuki Ito, Hiromichi Tanaka and Nobuo Uematsu too.

Final Fantasy, after X, really broke hard from the distinctive elements that had defined the series from its inception. Modern FF games are fairly hard to distinguish from Western RPGs like the Elder Scrolls or pretty much anything Bioware produces aside from some almost comedically exaggerated tropes transplanted from the earlier FF games. Earlier FF games, even ones that were more like the modern ones, specifically FF7 and FF8, still leaned heavily into painted-cel anime visuals, kept combat at a more strategic turn-based pace (obviously meaning no 3D action-RPG button mashing), kept the stories, conflicts, and struggles of the characters tied more to their own internal personal and interpersonal issues rather than go all Game of Thrones on us and make everything about ridiculously complex medieval kingdom political intrigue. Most crucially, there was a lightheartedness, much more levity, and a willingness not to take the plots of the games too seriously at all times in the earlier games. Zidane from FFIX strongly embodied that theme and mood for the earlier games, especially after Cloud and Squall both set the mode for melancholic neurotic character leads post-FFX.
