This is the true final boss fight in the game. And he is one tough final boss if you take him even the slightest bit lightly.
Fight Start: 3:03
Plot
After Kuja attempts to destroy the Crystal, Necron reveals that all life exists only to perish due to fear, after nearly quoting an exact quote from Star Wars. He explains he exists only to return everything to the zero world, aka destroy everything. Zidane of course will not let this happen.
The game gets a little criticism for having a final boss that sort of pops out of nowhere. Necron is not mentioned at all until this point in the game, and many people think the game should have ended with Trance Kuja. I think it's fine either way, and this fight is epic enough to warrant it being the final boss.
Strategy
This is a tough final boss fight, as I said earlier. Necron can up to THREE turns in a row, which is quite scary. He has two devastating ultimate attacks, and to top it off, his defenses are crazy. You're in for a long tough fight. I recommend LV40+, LV45-LV50+ if you don't want too much trouble. My levels were all over the place, from as low as LV39 to LV49 with Zidane.
Anyway, for abilities, you're going to want to equip tons of status ailment guards. His first ultimate attack, which he will use very early on, will inflict tons of status ailments. Equip the most important ones that would render the character unable to do a move. Auto-Haste should be equipped if you're a high enough level to equip it along with the status guards. Auto-Regen makes this fight much more bearable as well, but I chose not to use it for the challenge.
Necron has a large arsenal of moves at his disposal. His lesser ones are Flare, Holy, and Thundaga/Blizzaga/Firaga. His support moves are Protect/Shell/Curaga. He spams Shell/Protect whenever it runs out, it seems. This gives the illusion that he sometimes uses 3 moves in a row. It seems to be an auto move. The other lesser moves are nothing you aren't used to and aren't too lethal unless you're under LV40.
As for his bigger attacks, Blue Shockwave reduces one char's HP to 1. Pretty scary if followed up with anything. Meteor is always a scary move to be afraid of, due to its sheer randomness of the damage/accuracy.
His two ultimate attacks are very scary. Grand Cross is essentially just like Curse, except it doesn't do damage. What it inflicts is random, but it's essentially almost every single status ailment. It's at random, though, so it won't be all at once. Confuse, Stop, Death, Heat, Sleep, and Petrify are the worst. You can guard against all but Death and should.
His second ultimate attack is Neutron Ring, which he uses shortly after Grand Cross. It does a ton of damage to everyone. So you're going to want to at least get your White Mage character rid of status ailments and fully healed.
Then he'll repeat the cycle of moves. I could be wrong, but the illusion of his 3 moves in one turn can be likely because one is a counter attack (Blue Shockwave) while one is an auto move (Shell/Protect/Curaga?), and the last is just his regular move. He'll never do something like Grand Cross and Neutron Ring in the same turn anyway, so you should be fine.
For attacks, you're going to want to spam those fixed 9999 moves to end this fast as possible. Even Steiner's Shock might not do 9999 in this fight if the boss is under Protect status, which he probably will be 80% of the fight. Even Zidane at LV50 with Ultima Weapon will only do a measly 1-2k damage in this condition. Either way, as long as you keep at it with attacks when it's safe, you'll end the fight within 15 minutes.
Overall, tough final boss fight. But that's good, it should be tough. I find it the hardest FF final boss fight since FFIV. Auto-Haste + Auto-Regen at LV40+ makes this a good amount easier, but still tough.

The fact that you don’t like necron coming out of nowhere means the devs did a good job. You aren’t supposed to like it. It’s a slap in the face. You thought you did it. You beat the main villain and won, and the villains actions brought out an evil who’s decided to be life. After being bloodied and beaten up, a fight you don’t expect arises and now you HAVE to fight to really put it all out in the line to Win. This is the realest way some thing bad happens. Under your nose and out of nowhere. Truly remarkable writing and done very well.

I didn't hate the fact that Necron shows up after defeating Kuja. Deathguise was a brick wall, Kuja was the mission, and Necron was the achievement. No one expected him, unless they read a walkthrough, so you could prepare for Deathguise, you were prepared for Kuja, but Necron was a test of your ability to stay alive. The whole point of him was that you were beaten and bloodied, but wouldn't give up on life, which was the whole point of the story, of every character's story, was not to give up and accept the fate others hand you. You're supposed to be caught of guard by him, he arrived as the worst possible moment, because he's the last thing you would expect, an extra-dimensional being who has watched the universe Gaia belongs and has finally decided that his theory is correct and life is overrated.

Andrew Brennan When I was a kid I bought the guide to Final Fantasy IX, but I found out after I bought it that the last few pages were ripped out so I didn't know about Necron or Ozma or anything that came after Deathguise. So yeah he caught me and my brother completely off guard. He practically scared me to death the first time we saw him.

Andrew Brennan I don't mind the introduction of a new boss out of nowhere as, like you say, it's cool to be surprised. My issue with Necron is how it ties (or doesn't tie) into the story. If an enemy had popped up that was more pertinent to the plot at the end it would've been fine.

Death doesn't need a reason to tie to the story. He tells you why he's there. He comes left field I know, but the whole game is a reference to the earlier FF games, including the "surprise" final boss.

And also: almost every final boss(or at least FF4 and FF9) say that they are eternal just before they die. Ain't that ironic - Necron tells that you don't give up(or at least something like that), but Necron is the one who doesn't want/ doesn't accept his death.

if by the world you mean earth only it's hard to say if they had the same goal. FF7 Safer Sephiroth did want at some point to destroy the entire solar system later in AD, he wanted to ride it, as Jenova would have , and use earth as a vessel to conquere the universe. FF10 Yu Yevon never sought the destruction of everything but only to repeat the spiral of death to give meaning to what has become of his meaningless immortality. He clearly had trauma/rage against Bevelle and their use of machina in war which is why Sins hate technology so much. FF12 The Undying being Vayne Solidor - brother of Larsa and marquis . Took on Vehat's words and fuses with the good carrying the wish to rebels against the gods for mankind's freedom. Again no world destruction here.

Why is everybody so mad that Necron came out of no where? I've noticed that seems to be a recurring element in a lot off the FFs. Final Fantasy 3, the Cloud of Darkness came out of NO WHERE. Final Fantasy 4, that last boss came sort've came out of NO where. And Final Fantasy 13 and 13-2 bosses came out of NO WHERE! I havent played a few of the FFs YET... ...but I've come to notice that theres always a bigger boss that hasn't been talked about that always comes after the final boss you thought was the final. Does that make sense...?

I think Necron was meant to be a callback to Neo Exdeath, Final Fantasy V's final boss, which makes me subscribe to the theory that Necron represents the "back" of the Iifa Tree. Why? -Exdeath was once a tree in the Forest of Moore that housed a ton of evil spirits. If we follow that logic, it only makes sense for Necron to be linked to the evil within Iifa Tree. -They both share the goal of omnicide, including themselves once everything else is gone. Their logic for doing so is different, but the destruction of everything is basically the ultimate evil act. -If you listen to Necron's theme and Neo Exdeath's, you might notice a few parts are extremely similar. -They both have Grand Cross, and they have the same effect - a chance of inflicting any number of bad status ailments at random. Anyone else agree?

Aesthetically, I think this is one of the coolest final bosses. Both the design of Necron, and the music are flippin' crazy good. Sadly I think what cripples it story-wise is not that it's unexplained, but how sudden it is. If they would've just made a couple references to the looming "Eternal Darkness" earlier in the game, this fight would've been just downright awesome.

Allow me to recap the start of the ending... The party is warped to the outside of the Iifa Tree, and Zidane, sensing that Kuja is still alive, stays behind to save him. When the two meet, it is confirmed that it was Kuja who warped them out of the Hill of Despair and back into Gaia. If Kuja was the final boss, he would have warped them away from...himself? It would leave absolutely no time for him to realize how he was wrong.

My real name is Eien no Yami or "The darkness of Eternity". My battle represents the eternal struggle between the two extremes of existence The will to live and exist despite knowing where that road leads. The desire to disappear rather having to suffer such fate. My loss proves the will to live to be stronger

Eh... sorta but not really. Sephiroth's real body was frozen in mako at the Northern Crater for the entirety of the game, but he used Jenova as a vessel to carry out his will (his gibbering monologue in the Temple of the Ancients makes little sense otherwise) and it is really him you fight at the end of the game. Also he is the primary source of both Cloud's and Tifa's torment, who are two of the main-MAIN characters of FF7, the third being Aerith.

There's a chance that Necron doesn't come completely from nowhere - there is a moment where Doctor Tot wonders out loud what happened to cause the crystals or whatever they are to separate when they started as one, and at least one person has said that could(?) have been foreshadowing Necron. You are the same kind of player that claims that Grandia 2 has the worst final boss of all RPG´s because they do not realize that in the Japanese folklore the butterflies represent death and rebirth. FF9 is heavily Japanese folklore dipped and to top it up, the English dub was horrible leaving behind a lot of the hints and meanings that gave form to that ending. Heck, they even called "Necron" to "that which is the darkness of eternity" The game made a lot more sense in it´s original version

Welp, here is the moment in FFIX that is the most infamous and well known for the fans, the actual final boss: Necron, that comes right out of nowhere. But… in all honesty, Necron isn't even the BIGGEST problem with IX, I'd say that some of the biggest problems are Dagger's stupidity and the poorly done, unfocused love story of her and Zidane. Necron was at least last minute and a short appearance, and the whole "completely out of nowhere final boss" bad writing isn't even something that is unique to Necron, Final Fantasy and several old JRPG's did this cliché before, "Pulling a Necron" isn't anything new, but this guy's unexpected and arbitrary appearance at the end of IX is by far the most ridiculous example of this unfortunate practice, and the reason it's named after him. (Especially with how this is post-FFVII writing, you'd think that the writers would have moved on from this kind of bullshit) But if anything what is really irritating is that it's Necron that gets all the attention and focus as opposed to other larger problems with IX. What's also irritating is how some fans will actually try to justify his appearance. These fans will say things like "he is supposed to symbolic!" and "he is supposed to be a physical representation of the game's themes!". Okay, it's pretty dumb symbolism and IX's themes are all over the place and are incoherent, uninspired and uninteresting, and if the writers thought they were being "subtle and clever" they were freaking wrong, because this is about as subtle as a brick to the face. (There are even pretentious, long winded KZfaq "analysis" videos about Necron and trying to justify him) Some have also theorized that Necron is actually the true form of the Iifa Tree, based on what Garland said before about how Zidane "only saw the back of the Tree", which is a nice theory and all, but ultimately incorrect as the Ultimania completely josses this theory by stating: "Eternal Darkness [Necron] Monster created by fear of death A being awoken by the fear, despair and hatred of Kuja, who discovered, with the fulfillment of his ambition near, that he had little time left to live. It rejects the cycle of life through the crystal and attempts to return every world, including Terra and Gaia, to nothing. The final enemy to confront Zidane's team." (From the "Lifestream Net") Necron really is nothing more than just a random monster summoned by Kuja's feelings and the "symbolism" is nothing more than a cheap excuse and a cover up to the REAL reasons that he is here. The first reason: Necron is actually, like many things in IX, just a cheap reference to a past Final Fantasy, in this case it's a reference FFIII and the "Cloud of Darkness", the CoD was also an out of nowhere final boss for III that was brought upon by a person that feared death (Xande, that Kuja is copying from), though to be fair in the CoD's case, it wasn't completely out of nowhere, III repeatedly talks about the balance of light and dark and how if that balance is upset with light or dark getting out of control, it brings forth a cataclysm, and the CoD is that cataclysm, so it at least had more of a connection to the story than Necron did. (and the DS Remake of III at least tried to expand on this a bit more) Then there is Necron's actual name, You didn't think the last boss's original Japanese name was Necron, do you? It was probably changed because of text space restrictions, but Necron's Japanese name literally translates to "Eternal Darkness", as stated from the Ultimania quote above, and Necron even says his actual name right here in his dialogue (though the translation mixes up the words a bit) Is there a link here? The Cloud of DARKNESS (or Dark Cloud for a literal translation) emerges at the very end of Final Fantasy III to return all existence to the Void. The Eternal DARKNESS emerges at the very end of Final Fantasy IX to return all existence to nothingness. Hmmm. There also might be some FFV thrown in, given that Necron's design looks really similar to the Necrophobe, the optional boss you fight just before the final boss, Exdeath in V (that and the similar names, but considering that Necron isn't supposed to be his actual name, that could just be a coincidence), even the Crystal World looks pretty similar in appearance to the World of Darkness and the Interdimensional Rift, the final dungeons of III and V. The second and bigger reason: Necron is only here so Kuja can have his cheap last minute redemption, when you beat Necron, Kuja suddenly teleports you away back to outside of the Iifa Tree, and Kuja is suddenly all remorseful and the game try's to have this sad and tragic moment with him and Zidane. (will be addressing how weak that was when we get to that scene) Since having Kuja suddenly getting regretful and teleporting everyone out would have been too blatantly deus ex machina-ish, the writers threw in Necron to try and make the whole thing slightly more coherent. TL;DR version: The real reasons Necron is a thing is to be just another cheap shout out to a previous Final Fantasy and to be a walking talking plot device for Kuja to have his forced last minute redemption. (So the next time you come across a pretentious KZfaq video or some fan trying to justify Necron, copy and paste this rant to them)
