It's such a good feeling seeing the games you love get appreciated. EarthBound was a game I felt like no one knew when I was younger, and now it's seen as this legendary game. You love to see it. It validates your tastes in games too, haha.

This sort of reminded me of how I started playing Final Fantasy 12 and its combat immediately reminded me of the combat from Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, one of my favorite games. I think it'd be amazing to be a fly on the wall during the design of a Final Fantasy game. For as legendary as they are, I'm curious what direct inspirations they might've taken for certain parts of their games, only for players to discover that later on... Or maybe it was all just a strange happy accident!

It's really fun to trace the DNA thread between different games and see the commonalities in game design, story elements, or aesthetics. And the more games you play, you start to see those throughlines and references more and more clearly.

I basically ignored the Dragon Quest franchise until I picked up the remakes of 1-3 on Switch and enjoyed the first two (haven't played 3 yet). RIP Akira Toriyama.

RIP Akira 🙏 I actually played the Gameboy Color versions of Dragon Quest I & II pretty recently, really fantastic versions.
