I just don't understand what happened with the writing team because so many of these issues are so glaring and obviously bad. Like how did no one think that giving Wuk Lamat 90% of all dialogue in the MSQ was a good idea? How did no one realize how grating she comes off? How did we end up with nonsense story sections like Wuk Lamat stumbling onto a magic growth ritual by having horrible priorities, thinking a festival should be focused on after a storm left people homeless and starving, but somehow these people forgot that their ritual is magic even though they literally see a boat made of reeds fire lasers out that explode and rain magic energy down that makes plants instantly grow before their eyes? It feels like a kids show, like someone wrote this in middle school from a religious compound that sheltered them so they think "Peace is good, if we're friends then everything will be perfect" is the grand solution to life. I really hope they get rid of the main ones responsible for this foolishness and hire people that can write with depth and maturity again. There's no nice way to say it, so much of the MSQ was nonsensical and falls apart if you just think about what you just saw for 30 seconds.

@@paulmd7747 I hate to say it because I know it's not an easy job to take on but it's insane to me that apparently, no one saw these huge issues. Like did no one read through the HanuHanu quest? SPOILERS in Solution 9, no one thought it didn't make sense to have the Sir Otis thing after the game showed us Sphene is an Endless that can freely hop bodies? They already showed us that she is not in danger at all before that. And not even just bodies either that she can possess, but the same combat mechs attacking everyone? No one thought "But why can't she help fight? And why can't she just take over the ones that are attacking citizens? We see her freely jumping between bodies so many times. There's no way to defend the writers when it's that level of illogical.
@Lesgo67

@@mismismism Except that they DO explain why Sphene can't control the mechs that are attacking the city: Zarool Ja, as the King of resolve, has full authority over military affairs and Sphene has no power to stop it. She literally explains it as it happens, in no uncertain terms, and any literate adult should have been able to understand this. This shows the problem I have with reviews like yours. So inflammatory, arrogant, extremely judgemental, yet completely ignorant, incoherent and unable to even grasp what's going on. Just because you don't understand the story doesn't mean it's bad. The reason why you didn't like DT isn't because the writing is poor, it's because you have the reading comprehension of a toddler and absolutely no media literacy.
@mismismism
@mismismism Ай бұрын
@@Lesgo67 That doesn't make sense still because she's able to take them over without his authority. That alone is the ability to fight back. If someone gets attacked and she jumps into that mech or even just body blocks with the one she's in and just hops around as they die, that would make her the strongest weapon there even if she never raised a hand to actually fight. That's the inconsistency, they say she has no authority but her actions say the exact opposite. Also Sir Otis, again, he just uses willpower to break free of the "authority", it's not consistent so it looks stupid. And that's why I have a problem with replies like yours, you don't actually think it through and want to call people out and be nasty when you apparently can't notice when what is said by a character and what is actually done by a character, contradict each other.

Ishikawa isn't lost... she's still at SE and CS3, but definitely her being promoted to supervisor and less hands on/supposedly writing FF17 is great for CS3, but not nearly mitigated enough for DT. I don't think the other writers are that bad though, it just feels like Ishikawa was the most willing to engage with the darker subject matter/more serious tone and moral ambiguity. She had/has amazing clarity of vision and is obviously extremely talented. Whatever the case may be it's probably been heard loud and clear that we need Ishikawa STYLE writing, which is both narrative and developmental in focus.

I would give this a pass if that was the Covid era... Maybe(cause it was that bad). I also groaned out loud in the last fight when Wuk Popped into the fight, I was like "*Groan*, Of course! Why not?! And that is coming from a person that loved Wuks design, and the overall design of the new Femhroths so much that I was considering fantaing my character for the first time ever (I still have that Lvl50 MQS Fata reward :V) to a Femhroth, but I just had to give up cause they forced us to stomach her for the whole Expansion and I don't need any reminds of her, at least of a while. I don't think Stormblood was all that badly written, honestly. It just suffered from a few things. 1) Felt less epic and dramatic than the preceding HW (maybe we should've gotten SB first) 2) Lyse was quite an annoying character. What character development did we get? Babooli boy went from bully to friend in one second once his backstory was revealed. Wuk just sort of decided to be more confident. None of her development felt natural at all. How many times did she ask advice from any of the scions or the WoL, all of whom have plenty of experience dealing with her specific issues. In fact, she called herself the WoL's friend but she never actually engaged the WoL in a topic that wasn't... About her. "Wow you've been on so many adventures, what was your favourite? I don't feel the people in the last zone were truly alive. Here is something interesting - Sphene says that as long as we remember people, they never die? She erases dead people from the living's memories. The fact that this isn't brought up by our character or even Wuk Lamat is odd since it kind of negates what she says. In her mind I guess storing them on a computer is "memory", but it's not quite the same as the memory of friends or family. I do feel the last zone had issues, but my perspective is the opposite. At the end Wuk Lamat decides it's okay to let the people of Solution 9/ Heritage Found/ etc to continue living as they always have - so repurposing souls. To do this they have to harvest those souls and for me that is precisely what we stopped Meteion from doing? But to me if you find one aspect of this society problematic and I find another and neither are truly addressed? Then it doesn't matter if we agree since it's still poor writing.
@DeltafangEX
@DeltafangEX Ай бұрын
My girlfriend and I get into this argument all the time. Personally, I'd argue that they primed Memory to be as important as Souls through implying that a soul is mostly the motive force and not responsible for "who" you are - think why we needed to augment the Auracite used to bring the Scions back to the Source. Likewise, Elpis taught us that arcane entities are not "alive" in the traditional sense (no souls) but can still have memories and personalities. On top of that, the Dynamis echoes in Ultima Thule still have some (albeit limited) form of agency. It's hard to say, but I'd say I'm already pretty primed for stuff like this due to books I read/games I play that frequently bring up questions of the nature of the personhood of a "copy". Let's be honest, for all their grandeur it's not like the Ancients really respected traditionally alive creatures they simply plopped into being anyway - as we see with Hermes' plight. I like the idea, they just did not leave this idea in the oven for any length of time. Are the inhabitants of Living Memory's system alive? Not in the traditional sense, no. But the distinction they've made up to this point implies your soul's capacity for memory is what gives you any agency in the first place. Stripped of it, souls are just concentrated Aether and can be repurposed or distributed throughout the lifestream as such. In that sense, yes, they are alive. The writing is all over the place but the biggest issue I had with the whole thing is that the inhabitants had the right to _know_ that we were shutting them down. It may have been a mercy not to tell them - but I would have at least liked the choice. It's a necessary evil but still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont Ай бұрын
If you lose all of your memories right now, are you still alive? Yes. Are you still 'you'? Look at mindflayers in BG, Withers flat out tells us that they do not possess souls, and yet lingering echoes/memories of the individual exist, but they are not the same person. They are a soulless entity which happens to co-opt some of the 'hosts' memories. Which implies that if Bob became a mindflayer, a god could resurrect Bob and both could exist at once. So kinda like Living Memory. But yeah none of them have any issues with their existence being snuffed out. Despite being perfect simulacrums, they lack self preservation which is just lazy writing.

@Staygold1999 but she doesn't just talk about that. She talks about a lot more. Specifically, she talks about the fact that's she's basically her countries equivalent of a city girl and that she has a serious lack of understanding of her place as dawnservant, the kind of people that exist outside of her known world in the city, the struggles those people place, so on and so forth. I don't understand how an expansion adhering to the general theme that a 30+ year old franchise has had is now bad just because a new character is introduced in a new expansion. I don't think it would have made a difference if it was an established character either, and even if it was the overall message would not land because they already understand these ideas thoroughly from the experience they have with us. Honestly after playing since RR was about to transition into HW I had been hooked to FF14, it was a major part of my free time and I had a ton of fun and was constantly glued to the screen for the MSQ but Dawntrail just left me feeling apathetic, I found it very hard to care about this new land or Wuk Lamat's journey to become it's leader, shes a static wall of anime protagonist tropes without any of the character development to flesh them out, she also takes up way too much of the screen time to an almost comical degree (she doesn't even let the WoL sleep without feeling the need to get back on camera), the antagonists weren't much better either all three of them being fairly shallow and really failed to make me want to confront them outside the generic save the world bit. The supporting cast was more hit than miss but they suffered from not having nearly enough screen time, Ernville is a great character but his big moment in MSQ almost felt rushed, same with Krile who gets one small part to try and do her whole story arc after sitting on it for half the MSQ. Most of the scions also could have been cut and just replaced by new Local NPCS, and of course the lower stakes we were promised turned out to be a bold faced lie. The second act feels like it was originally intended for later in the patch MSQ content but they realized they couldn't stretch out the first act anymore and panicked. I'll give the first MSQ patch a chance to see if they course correct but If not this may be the first expansion I decide to miss out on, I'm just finding really hard to care this time. I did enjoy the the dungeon and trial content but FF14 is more than that, it's MSQ was a big reason I kept playing and it just isnt up to the standard I expect from this dev team, even the somewhat bland post Endwalker MSQ stuff had me more invested than this, im not saying we need to save the world I just want to care about what i'm doing and who I'm interacting with and Dawntrail just didn't have that draw for me.

I finished the DT MSQ the day the expansion launched for everyone, and I said in several places that I rated DT below ARR. I got so much shit for that lol. But it's true... neither had good characterization, both had awful pacing, both are riddled with menial tasks and fetch quests in the middle of the MSQ, both suffer from a wild pacing a tone shift too near the end of the MSQ (not including ARR parch content here), both have bland 2 dimensional villains that aren't explored enough... But ARR provided setting and plot meat. It expanded on the Ascians and gave us plot hooks. ARR MSQ picked up the pace near the end but kept it's momentum. DT gave us nothing but a McGuffin, and it's world building is ultimately wasted because we resolve the Source setting completely and literally delete most of the Reflection world that was set up. And the last zone stalls the momentum completely st the worst time, last zone was awful... and while ARR had poor characterization, your PC was the center of events so you were still engaged. Wuk Lamat was DT's WoL, and I'd you didn't like her (I hate her character, personally) then you COMPLETELY check out of most of the expansion. It is quantifiably worse than ARR.

Things I believe would make the MSQ better: - We're helping Gulool Ja Ja in the unification of Tural or to resolve internal conflict instead of Wuk Lamat in the rite of succession, the dungeons/trials along the way are favors to the tribes, during this we are actively training/scolding/teaching her, we beat Valigarmanda at the end marking the unification and end of act 1 finding the portal to the golden city. - Act 2 would be focused on Krile as her earring opens up the portal, but the city is deactivated on power saving mode, we retrieve the cup/key, we learn that Gulool Ja Ja had found the portal before with Galuf when he received Krile but never got to make it open again. Zoraal Ja gets self conscious that his siblings might surpass him as he under perform during act 1 and gets manipulated by the mamool mage. They steal the cup and bring it back to the portal activating the city, Sphene says they will need energy/souls to live and agrees in granting Zoraal strength in exchange. We then start investigating recent attacks on settlements close to the portal until we find the portal opened and we explore a now 'live' Alexandria. - While investigating, Sphene recognizes Krile as descendant of her late subjects, we learn more about the reflection and their tech, more dungeons, Sphene reveals were Zoraal is hiding, we find and fight him, Gulool gets injured and we find out that Sphene was also behind the attacks, she says that they dont have much more time and need the energy to keep her and the endless alive, some questing later and last trial begins, we beat the C++ out of her and at the end she finds comfort that Krile will carry on the legacy of her reflection, imparting some knowledge to the earring or via echo before shutting down. Gulool lives and continue to rule the kingdom he just funded and request or help to keep things in check. As to follow up with the raids and next patches: With the key, the portal on our side and the knowledge we receive we would research the travel between shards, the Arcadion could be in one of the other reflections that had some similarities to the one that Alexandria hail from. The alliance raid could take place in the space between the source and reflections and whatever is there (shadow lords) is not happy that we are trying to use his home as a freeway again.

The taco trial was where I realized the writers were afraid to do anything interesting. Pairing Wuk with one of the antagonists would have been a perfect opportunity to see how she handles having to cooperate and compromise with someone who rejects her "live, laugh, love" solution to everything. Not to mention an opportunity to flesh out Bakool or Zaruul and their motivations. I was starving for good chacterization. The Scions especially felt like they got their personalities wiped.

There's a lot of parallels actually, when you think about it. Emet shadowed us for most of the expansion to see if we could compromise, basically. Sphene did the same thing (for a level or two) but didn't ever present her case until it was already an ultimatum. If she had laid out her problem earlier, we absolutely could have avoided conflict, but the writers didn't seem to grasp that, they didn't give us a compelling reason to stomp her brains, as we did to Emet.

@@SilverMont Definitely. Sphene's arc was too rushed, so it was hard to invest in her story. My friend told me he got emotional when we had to turn off Cachiua, and I told him that they're only memories - which sparked a conversation about what it means to be alive. I was of the opinion that the Endless were just virtual clones, so there shouldn't be any guilt in terminating them. A little off topic, but what did you think of Bakuul Ja Ja's story and the countless children that died in Mamook? I didn't skip any cutscenes, but it didn't seem very obvious why so many had to die. @@3ureka The issue here is the distinction is being made between what's alive and what's not alive. The REAL distinction should be if they are people or not, if they can feel, think, imagine, desire, hope, they are people and were worth our consideration as people. When we teleport Emet-Selch and Hyth to us to save the universe, they are not alive. They are dead. But they are still people. I don't think anyone would feel we have a right to do anything we want to the people in the aetherial sea without their consent. The Endless know what they are, where they are, they have desires, the have feelings, Cahciua ran a rebellion outside of Living Memory, Krile's parents deduced we were about to delete them. Non-people shouldn't be running rebellions and figuring out our plans. They are made of memory aether and are clearly conscious. Cahciua wouldn't have been able to strong arm us into wiping them all out if she was "just a program." Sure, the parents of our party were conveniently okay with being shut off, but what about the guy who has been waiting CENTURIES to marry his love, he could have used a few more weeks. What about the people with unfinished business who linger on even after Living Memory is shut down? We might not have technically killed anyone, but we wiped out thousands of people with little regard for them and without their consent. Having your memories wash away in the aetherial sea is a slow process that can be resisted giving people years to wait and reunite with loved ones and watch the living do their thing. By just wiping everyone, they all dissipated without the opportunity to do the things people get to do in the natural cycle after they die.

I really needed the laugh, and I thank you. Dawntrail, if you remove Wuk Lamat (or at the very least reduce her presence to like an eighth of what it is) would have been a very middling expansion. Possibly better than Stormblood. And I think freeing an occupied nation from an evil woman, and then following that up with freeing an occupied nation from an evil woman, is more compelling than babysitting the heir to the throne of some knockoff Aztec empire. But WITH Wuk Lamat? I'd rather complete the rest of the ARR relics. Wuk Lamat is an awful character, and she's omnipresent. There ARE no other characters. Only Wuk Lamat.

We had enough time to go and talk to random computer ghosts but not enough time to linkshell Cid or anyone and ask for an option. Sphene just followed us around for days wherein we had plenty of time to discuss it but instead she just arbitrarily decided the exact moment we clowned Zahooli Ba was the moment to act? I dunno, it was very forced. Compare with Emet and how he followed us around for most of ShB until it was very plain there could be no middle ground. And we also didn't have access to our resources as we were on another planet. Cid the miracle man and all of Sharlayan and the moon rabbits were a linkshell call away. Why couldn't we just send them all to live on the moon which had been prepared for that very purpose for thousands of years? And Sphene herself turned out to be a program, made in image of real Sphene, with a set priority of saving its “people” over others. We even have an option to call it out after final trial. Well we had EW demonising entire civilisations as 'dead ends' because of certain facets of how they simply existed in the most naive way possible, all the while pretending this wouldn't happen to the sundered of Etheirys, and few people called it out. Of course later the story decided the dynamis dead end recreations weren't so hopeless but w/e. Sure, the way the Endless existed entailed a risk to the other sundered, but it'd be nice for the WoL to for once find another way to help them than just pulling the plug in pursuit of rather tired 'themes'...

I was exaggerating some, of course - Sphene was a little more than a "minor" inconvenience. But we didn't even stop for a minute to try and come up with a solution - we didn't convene with any of the 99 billion people our WoL has met over his journey to see if any of them had any ideas. Remember when tempering was 'absolute' and could not be undone? Remember any of the other impossible challenges the WoL has had to overcome with the help of dozens of others? Yeah this time they just checked out and said "yeah whatever unplug the giant soul computer thing IDC" It was hilarious that the game desperately tried to inform that us that "oh the entire civilisation is okay with being unalived because they just don't care and they know they aren't real" because we spoke to like 4 NPCs. All sentient life has the impetus to survive. That was even a huge theme of Endwalker. Sure, they aren't technically alive, but they are, for all intents and purposes, sentient beings that operate in the same way as humans do. Like holograms in Star Trek - which even had an episode where one hologram became completely self-aware, and they had to create a satisfying conclusion for him because just turning him off would effectively be murder at that point.

This could have been really great and an exploration of the WoLs character like "What do you do if your only choices are either to genocide an entire race of people or let every living thing on the planet die?" Also, there were tons of potential solutions that didn't involve murder. Like, you mean to tell me a civilization that advanced hadn't invented some form of non-volatile storage? Like, if these are really just memories, why can't you just store them on a hard drive?

So after putting me to sleep with 40 hours of rambling about peace and understanding, the first time a corrupted AI program is being unreasonable, we delete an entire civilization, an act which impacted nothing. And if we don't accept the premise that the inhabitants in Living Memory are truly alive, then there is no moral problem with wiping them out to save the world. No need to expend any special effort to save them. That said, this is an issue that should have been fully explored in the MSQ, and this is where I think the story falls short. Maybe we should consider them truly alive, and therefore we would have to acknowledge they have certain rights that should prevent moral people from wanting to just sacrifice them for a greater good. Sorry for the long post in advance. In my opinion, they made the first 50% of the Main story too long and the last 50% too short. The best way I think they could have handle it was have the Wuk Lamat part only cover the first two maps then the 3rd and 4th map focus on WoL going on a Adventure as he/she was promised since the reason WoL went to this country was because of the promised sponsorship from Wuk Lamat that will have given him/her authorization to freely explore the lands as a adventurer. The 5th and 6th map should have been focus on alexandria so we can have a better understanding why their way of life is wrong and provide more time to show the flaw of the Endless being just perfect copies of a person only on a surface level but they lack the ability to understand and accept alternatives to their current mind set due to lacking the inner values of the individual they are copies of due to lacking a soul. They show this aspect mostly between Sphene and Otis. Otis is meant to represent someone in Alexandria who still continue to live without having his soul turned into soul food and he maintained all his values. However, Sphene is single minded on her methods to save her people and only mimics the love for her people the real Sphene has on the surface level which is why she could not accept the offer of a possible alternative solution to save the endless and if her current methods was leading her own people to self destruction due to them acting no different from Voidsents which also denied them the ability to enter the afterlife and go through the process of reincarnation.

I could buy us having to fight Sphene ultimately, but we didn't even try and arrive at another conclusion. She followed us around for a while, then after she watched us absolutely demolish the Arbiter, she decided "actually I have decided I want these people to come and clobber my brains in, too!" suddenly. Had we exhausted every possible avenue in reaching a peaceful arrangement, I could buy it. Or even if they had done a better job at portraying the final zone and its inhabitants. They tried to make a point about how they "aren't real" and "aren't alive" but then show you how, actually, everyone in that zone effectively IS alive. Because the only thing that differentiates them from any other character is that the game told us it was OK to kill them 'cos they aren't... real? There was no real conflict or meaning behind any of that, it was all handled just... badly, in my opinion. Reminded me of the final zone in Endwalker, which I felt was handled far better.

She's likable, but way too much stick on us to be appréciated. Even Alphinaud in HW had the decency to not be there in big portion of the expansion. And that little kiddo is stick to us to during it

DT is an amazing story, and I know the doomers and boomers will seethe at the thought, but is better as a whole than SHB. It has strong themes when it comes to legacy, provides interesting character development for several characters, manages many plot threads simultaneously. Comparing the Turali definition of legacy (living on through the memories of your descendants) versus the Alexandrian conception (erased form the memory of others, but your own memories live on) is extremely clever. The last zone is both extremely poignant and resolves the character arcs in a way that fits the theme. Dismissing a lot of the story as fetch quests is ridiculous and shows a lack of reading comprehension. It can be easily gleaned that the purpose of said quests was to have the candidates retrace the path of the original Dawnservants, learn of their history and as such, grow in such a way that they can replicate what Gulool Ja Ja did and further its legacy. He even says so explicitly to the WOL later on, and yet, many people still miss it. I hope that the writing continues to improve in such a manner in the future, no matter what the edgelords think.

You're definitely in the minority on this.

Strong themes of legacy? Like Zambooli Ba giving his son his legacy of brutality and the son and all the citizens being fine with that?

You're allowed to like crap all you want. Don't know why you have to take it so personally when the majority of people feel it's middling at best.

The story is okay. You focus too much on the bad, all you see is bad.

Not really. Go watch my reviews of all the other expansions - I always talk about what I like and dislike. It just so happens this time I didn't like the story.

Yeah, to me the story is a 7/10. There is a lot of hyperbole out there on this x-pac. For instance you should see the amount of 0/10 on metacritic with one liner copy paste shit like naruto character and such. Basically Wuk makes or breaks the games story for most. The pacing and questing are bad though but have been for the last few x-pac's though.

It's hard to not focus on the bad when the bad is shoved down your throat at every cutscene. It single handedly ruined the last boss fight mood and theme all on its own. And this comes from someone who was cheering on her during all the first half of the expansion, but after the attack, when i thought she was already "over", oh no, the shit show continued. Sadly the writters really fumbled on this one, having this Naruto of a character feels just bad, bad and lazy writting.

@@aarongiven4961 I agree about the hyperbole, it's absolutely everywhere. However, I will say that I'm very impressed that practically every story review I've watched is balanced and devoid of the brainrot you see on metacritic and in comments sections. It's a solid 6.5/10 for me and I _still_ consider myself a FFXIV evangelist. As a fan of narratives in games like SOMA and books like The Quantum Thief, how undercooked the second half was hurts me something fierce. Personally, I'm willing to chalk it up to Yoshi/Koji overextending with FFXVI and Ishikawa trying to be more hands off and I have faith that they will take the feedback to heart.

It's very odd to insist someone is lying about their own tastes. I dislike the taste of liver so much that if I put it in my mouth on accident, I will spit it out. I fell asleep playing DT at 5pm during a cutscene because I was so bored. Are you really going to insist I don't understand my own feelings of boredom and I'm just exaggerating them to hurt a game I'm still paying monthly to play? DT's story was bad *to me.* Fortunately, they did a really good job on pretty much everything else. But I could go on forever about the issues with the writing because it was very bad.

Didnt we unplug the golden city because Sphene was going to drain the other shards of aether to sustain an unsustainable system? They were literally mnemonic imprints, comparing it to Emet Selch is a bit much.

In concept, it could've worked. In practice, it was handled in a really clumsy way. Because they didn't emphasize or really even suggest at all, how they are different from living creatures. They were able to plan and pull off revolutions in another shard, for one thing. Hold real conversations and have awareness of their surroundings. The logic that they aren't really "alive" was the same logic Emet used against us, from his perspective, we weren't alive. Yes the system was stupid and a threat, but it all resolving into "well we need to kill each other" was rushed as hell. And Sphene arrived at that misguided conclusion after watching us dismantle her king and seeing first hand that her plan wouldn't work. Which might have been interesting, had she hinted in any way that it was why she did it - knowing we'd stop her, but they didn't. It was all just clumsy writing.
