Clive Rosfield was born as the firstborn son of archduke Elwin Rosfield and his wife, Anabella. As the eldest son of Rosarian bloodline, he was expected to inherit the power of the Phoenix, the eikon of fire. However, for reasons unknown, he was rejected. As a result, Anabella considered him a failure and treated him with contempt.

@@mbovb006 Not really. That could be taken as symbolic of Clive, but also just straight as a reference to Metia itself, or magic for that matter. Moongazing, the official theme of the game plays in the Japanese version. It strongly implies the opposite of what you're suggesting, that Clive likely survived and the sunrise was symbolic of his return. Translated from Japanese: In the moonlight the willow sways On this roadside I am but a stone Visions of you come to me Like counting sheep If there is any meaning to our parting ways Then you need not be sad From the silence to a distant sky Fill your heart with an unwavering love No matter what night No matter the cost Haven't we been living this life together As if in the blink of an eye I was yearning for something Gazing at the moon I was so afraid of the storm, when you appeared before me And I'm so glad that it was you It's as if nothing before this moment ever mattered This flame will never go out Ever

All signs line up and point to Clive surviving and returning to Jill. He took on Joshua's name and wrote "Final Fantasy" 1. It's not the first time Clive took on another person's name. 2. Harpocrates gives Clive a quill, asking him to put down the sword and take up the pen once he defeats Ultima. -"The only Fantasy here is yours. And we shall be it's Final witness!" Nobody except Clive and Ultima were there to witness that line. The name of the book is "Final Fantasy." 3. Clive is the narrator of the story. He narrates the beginning and the ending of the game. "And thus did our Journey end." The Platinum trophy is called "The Chronicler" with the subtext "And thus did our Journey end." 4. Clive is right handed. His left hand turned to stone. 5. Metia doesn't fade because Clive "dies". It fades because Clive destroyed all magic in the world. This also explains why Jill can't sense him anymore and assumes he's dead. 6. There's a scene where Jill explains how when the dawn breaks, she knows he'll return to her. 7. Part of Clive's character arc is learning how to save himself. This is directly called out multiple times by other characters, including Jill. 8. The End Credits song "Moongazing" spells out Clive returning to Jill. Clive Alive.

Square Enix just released the official translation of Moongazing, it's in no way about Clive returning to Jill but about a guy(Clive) saying sorry to the moon(girl/Jill) and wishing to be REBORN to return to her side. So this song "My Star" and "Moongazing" are in Jill and Clive's POV. It confirms his death.

@@TacoLex Bro I was talking about the song "Moongazing". But for a more grounded context about the Metia star, Metia is indeed a Valisthean folklore and acts as a wishing star in the story. That's why Jill is always praying to it. It only faded at the end beside the moon, meaning it can no longer send wishes to the moon. That's why Jill cried. Now tie it up to both the songs for more context.

@@aileene-ez9gx " it's in no way about Clive returning to Jill but about a guy(Clive) saying sorry to the moon(girl/Jill) and wishing to be REBORN to return to her side." I was yearning for something, gazing at the moon I was so afraid of the storm, when you appeared before me And I'm so glad it was you It's as if nothing before this moment ever mattered This flame will never go out, ever. Nah mate, that's pretty cut and dry. Clive returns to her. You also can't look at these points of evidence individually on their own. All evidence, hints, and symbolism about Clive surviving line up and support each other. The book makes the strongest case there is. Clive narrates the beginning and end of the game -> Clive gets the quill to chronicle his journey -> Titles the book the words he used to deliver the death blow to Ultima -> Uses Cid the Outlaw Symbol on the book -> Platinum Trophy is The Chronicler and uses the narrator's (Clive's) closing words as it's subtext -> Circle back to point 1. Symbolism is always always always important in an FF. I've been having these conversations for as long as I can remember. People had it with FFVII, FFT and FFX when some players would argue the heroes were dead, only to later be confirmed and canonized to be alive. FFXVI is no different. Clive receiving the quill, and Jill talking about the dawn, are scenes that happen before the Final Battle, for a reason. It is very intentional by the writer.

There's a line Clive says in the game, to a hostile NPC, that he understands the weight of an oath because he knows how hard they are to keep. The torture of failing, the desperation of keeping, and the exaltation of absolution. Clive's been through it all. Sleep well, Clive.

My first raw experience with an ff game. I started with 7 back in 2015-16, and I was there for 15's launch, but I was spoiled early on and was a couple weeks late. I made sure I picked this up day one and steered clear of any social media for the whole week, focusing only on work and this game. Actually not knowing what to expect, speculating what was going to happen as my siblings watched a good chunk of my playthrough, was a really cool experience. I love all of the ff games I've played (6,7, 10 mainly) but I knew what to expect cause they were all 20+ year old games. I was not expecting to go from cheering hype as Clive namedrops the franchise (genuinely had to pause and take a lap around the room) , to crying within 20 minutes as the credits rolled. Its the only series that can do that for me, and I'm glad I was able to experience 16 the same way people got to experience the classics. This is gonna stick with me for a long time

After an epic and action packed fight this really hit me hard, despite all the signs, I really wanted Clive to live free with Jill (tbh I don't believe the current theories that he is still alive but I wish) Seeing Cid II exhausted on the beach along with that great song made me really say "Oh.... So this is the end of the journey". I wish a dlc with some backstory, like Cid's life, What happens after Clive or similar. I loved that this adventure had a little bit of everything, it starts with the responsibility of being the shield of the Phoenix, then goes through revenge, forgiveness...God, and that's not counting the side quests with sequence, the lostwing sequence is one of those that make you empathize with the characters. --It was like the story of a certain heroic creator of unlimited swords, who took someone else's legacy and tried to do the right thing :,)

I cannot help but think that this game is the best modern Shakespearean style tragedy I’ve frankly ever consumed. No other tragic story has ever hurt so good so to speak😂 the beauty of a tragedy is how deeply it moves you and sticks with you. This’ll be a lengthy read. But with Yoshi-P saying this ending is up to interpretation I’ll give my thoughts on it. Dion is dead. He flew into Origin knowing it was a one way trip for him. Weighed down by the guilt of destroying his empire, killing his father, he wanted to repay all those lives he wronged by the only way he felt was right: death. But not before he took the evil that plagued his homeland with him. He earned that warrior’s death. Joshua survives. Yes, even he states that the Phoenix cannot bring people back from the dead. But when paired with Ultima’s power of creation, Clive could very well posses the power to bring at least one back from death. And he would gladly bring Joshua back. Clive is alive. He shouldn’t be, after using Ultima’s power that his body could not handle to destroy Origin and heal Joshua. Which is why his left hand was beginning to petrify. Jill’s heartfelt wish to Metia was heard and granted. The star fading out not signifying Clive’s life force, but rather performing a miracle and ensuring Clive survives. He may be down an arm, but he lives. Jill then sees that dawn is rising and she stops crying because she knows that dawn always comes, and Clive will always find a way back to her.

The only issue with that interpretation of Clive being alive is that Jill had, indeed, wished for Clive's safe return, something which had been "granted" over and over before, and to our knowledge, the light of Metia had never faded in those instances, yet it does so now.

The terms of his life and his death are his own and I think it is purposefully vague to show that lives are owned by the individual. It is not about whether he lived or died but rather that he got to act within his will. How it ends does not matter in this case for the journey of free will was the goal.

i love this cutscene for so many reasons. the moment at 2:39, Torgal's howl, and the sunrise showing Clive's promise to return. it also reminds me of the Shadowbringers credits cutscene, only inverted (spoilers): the hero waking up on a beach, alone in the dead of night instead of being surrounded by his party, the ones who love him most mourning him at home instead of celebrating a hero's return, and the hope that the sunrise brings, instead of the night.

The most important side quests are "Priceless" along with "A Tail to Tell" Both played will explain the meaning of the dawn seen end game and the book, written by cid rosfield. "A Tail to Tell" "when the day comes, I'l certainly have a lot to write about" is what clive replied to Haprocrates after his encouragement to pick up a pen. Harpocrates is all-knowing as the game claims, but opting choosing to delve into the intimacy side of pheonix and ifrit(older brother), chances it's more likely Clive. There's a point in the game where Joshua clearly stated that his eikon's power could never bring someone back to life. Clive who loves his brother more than cid, should probably have higher chances that he would honor his brother's legacy. "Priceless" In Priceless, Japanese language; On that special day when they were young, Jill recalled witnessing the flowers reaching out for the sun after the storm; similarly, Clive reached out to her and calmed her down from the "storm" the storm being that she was being ignored as a person when she overheard her marriage potential. She gains the conviction that Clive will always be there for her, no matter what (a belief that is confirmed several times in the game, with Clive first coming back to her after many years apart and then saving her in the ship). She said that's a quality she appreciates and likes about him before she confessed to him and declared him as her treasure. Therefore, end-game seeing the sun rising calmed her down and stopped her from crying any further. But, endings are arbitrary nowadays, it's a gamer's pick. cheers!

Here's an alternative interpretation of the ending - the star implies Clive's fire power. In the beginning of the end scene, Clive lifted up his hand trying to cast a spell to confirm the magic in the world was gone for good, and since magic no longer exist in the world, therefore, the fire faded away, and so did the star...but I believe Clive and Jill end up living happily, low-key, together, forever. 🥺

In the tarot arcana the number 16 is the tower(of babel), the fall of an old world order and the diaspora of the civilization. The 17th arcana is the star(of the Magi going to Jerusalem) symbol of hope and a new radiant future, enlightenment, body and mind converting to one point (toward the light). I guess it is no coincidence this song called like so. The next chapter of Final Fantasy will likely be directed to this new path. What do you think? If you are confused on where is the Tower of Babel in the game it is not just one “tower” the crystals are the tower(s) of Babel.

As a FF fan for 20+ years, I can share that this is truly a Final Fantasy experience (I embrace the technical differences it introduces in contrast to previous FF games). I am feeling grateful for the developers and Square Enix, as it is clearly shown they put their hearts into it. I am very much hopeful for a DLC in the near future. It seems to be likely, based on a recent interview with the producer Yoshi-P (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z6qIncimxuCng6M.html). Keeping fingers-crossed that Clive (and even Joshua and Dion) live.
