A playthrough of Capcom's 1993 beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, Final Fight 2.
Played through as Haggar on the expert difficulty level to show the best ending.
Responsible for establishing the formula that defined the 90's beat 'em up, Capcom's Final Fight ( • Final Fight (Arcade) P... ) was an immediate hit when it came out in late 1989, and it's still celebrated as a classic genre cornerstone today.
Despite its cutbacks, the Super Nintendo version ( • Final Fight (SNES) Pla... ) was likewise an incredibly popular game when it was released in the fall of 1991, selling around 1.5 million copies. This success inevitably led Capcom to develop a direct sequel, the SNES-exclusive Final Fight 2, which shipped worldwide in 1993.
In Final Fight 2, Mike Haggar once again stars as the ex-professional wrestler turned head-busting vigilante mayor of Metro City. Guy's girlfriend Rena and her father, Genryusai, have been kidnapped by the new leader of the Mad Gear gang, and Rena's sister Maki calls Haggar asking for help. Haggar and his buddy Carlos then head to Hong Kong to meet up with Maki and begin the search.
The gameplay feels much the same as Final Fight's, but the sequel addresses all the complaints that were leveled at the port of the original game. There are three selectable characters who each have their own distinctive fighting styles and movesets, the game features a 2P simultaneous co-op mode, and the slowdown that plagued the first game is nowhere to be found.
It was clear that Capcom had a much better handle on the SNES hardware this time around. The game's larger cart size and the fact that it was designed specifically with the limits of the SNES in mind resulted in a game that felt far less compromised than the first one. The animation is better, the controls are more consistent thanks to the game's improved performance, and there's more content overall - six lengthy stages, in total.
(I did have one complaint, though. The soundtrack was such a disappointment for me. I hated it! The songs aren't memorable, the instruments are grating, and there's way too much reverb.)
It didn't fare quite as well critically as the first game did, but it was a huge success for Capcom with sales once again topping the million mark. The main takeaway from the reviews was that it was essentially a redressed copy of the first Final Fight with all of the kinks ironed out, and I'd say they were pretty spot-on.
If you hated Final Fight, there isn't much on offer here that would change your mind. But, for fans of the original, Final Fight 2 provides more of the same great gameplay with a whole lot more polish.

Retu was boring compared to Belger. "Evil Kabuki actor" was better used in Revenge of Shinobi imo, it had him use his hair as a long-ranged weapon

Its kinda mid, due to the fact Final Fight 3 exists, and the fact that the AI is really really bad, so to compensate they are really defensive and have tons of health (a bit like Streets of Rage 1 in that regard, but that game slaps compared to this) Its just really monotonous due to the high enemy health; Any beat-em-up that has the feeling of "chipping away" where you need to camp the corners and wait a lot, or abuse tricks like looking away during a combo to extend, is not what I'd call a good beat-em-up, but its the most common type.

Final Fight 2 was actually quite financially successful, selling over one million copies. OK, it didn't make as much as the original Final Fight's SNES port which sold 1.5 million copies, however back in those days very seldom do sequels do as good as their originals. It was felt by critics that Final Fight 2 was too similar to the original, and all it had to offer was a change of setting with the global locations, and the two-player mode that was sorely missing from the original's SNES port. It was also said that the game felt and looked bored and tired. But, I argue that Final Fight 2 is a good fun game. I would even go as far as to say it's quite underrated. To me, it has plenty of fun thrills and spills and wacky adventure that you would expect from a Final Fight game. Maybe its premise was too similar to the first game, maybe back in 1993, people went in with very high expectations and were thus disappointed, but I say go back and play Final Fight 2; it's honest a pretty good beat-em-up and deserves more praise; it represents an occasion where Mike Haggar left the United States to take on Mad Gear around the world, where all manner of chaos ensued; definitely a trip to remember. So, go back and play Final Fight 2 with fresh eyes, without having the other Final Fight games in mind.

I would have preferred a few more enemies on the wackier side of the spectrum, but Elick (the fat guy with the electrodes) more than makes up for it. The gang's just not as memorable as the enemies in the first one, but there's still a lot of personality here.

...but he has a simple pattern. Just keep distance and he will make this short and quick jumps. Attack (throw him!) after he did such a jump and keep distance from his rage attack afterwards. It needs the right timing but ist's easy to learn!

This is such an obscure game from a collecting standpoint. As a collector I never saw this game in my days of game hunting at flea markets, garage sales and thrift stores. I saw Final Fight 3 many times, but never 2. FF3 is my favourite but this one is very solid. It also has some really funky music.

@@supersexysega Thanks for the info. Ya this game is definitely hard to find. Sometimes the middle rarity games are the most difficult to find because there wasn’t as much incentive to find/keep them as the rarer/more valuable games. Just my experience over the years.

It always amused me that Haggar was the mayor of Metro City, but is just flying across the world to beat up goons. Like "Mister Mayor, we have three meetings tomorrow about the budget, the state of city roads, and mass transit." "Yeah yeah, listen, I'm going to Hong Kong for two weeks. Can't talk about why."

This game and Street Fighter Alpha 2 both take place concurrently, Guy is pursuing Bison which is why he was absent during Final Fight 2. Same as the first FF, that game and the original Street Fighter both happen at the same time.

FF2 is definitely one of the best 16bit brawlers. It's also a great looking game, Capcom did a great job. There exists also a hack with more enemies (up to 5 or 6 instead of three) at one screen, it's a real competition!

And what's interesting is that Haggar and Zangief learned each other's moves and they somehow improved those moves. For example, Zangief tweaked his clothesline to let him move, while Haggar learned how to do his spinning piledriver.

Classic game. Essentially Final Fight 1 but in international settings rather than New Yor-I mean, "Metro City". Regarding the soundtrack, while I agree it's not as memorable as 1 or even 3, but I have to say, I do like the track for the sub-levels (the one that plays in the basement in the first stage among other places, serves a similar function as Law and Disorder from 3), as well as the stage 1/final boss theme, and the Italy theme (first part).

Always had mixed feelings about this game. On one hand, the graphics and character animations are much better than the first game, we now have *THREE* characters who all play differently and we now have the option for co-op. At the same time though, it's slightly censored, the bosses are HP sponges and the soundtrack isn't nearly as good as the first game. It's also very repetitive and... I think you guys overdid the reverberation a little. Not a bad sequel, but it's easy to see why it isn't brought up a whole lot these days.

final fight 2 is straight up weird. Its like they used extras from their other brawlers and mashed it all together with some story to justify the material. I had fun playin it its just weird. Final Fight 3 takes it back to its roots.

I loved the original Final Fight; it was one of the first three SNES games that I owned back in 1991. I had never played the arcade version, so I had nothing to compare it to, but I certainly didn't miss Guy (who was not much different than Cody anyhow, so who really cares) or the excised level, and the slowdown, while noticeable, was nothing for someone coming from the NES. This game, though...the music is terrible, and the graphics are absolutely pathetic compared to the original -- smaller, less clean, and with a rather pixelated look. I would much rather have a bit of slowdown if the tradeoff buys me the better graphics from the original. Also, I played both games exclusively as Haggar, and I much preferred the animations of his moves from the original. I rented this game a few times, but never had even the slightest desire to buy it, in spite of my fondness for the original. NintendoComplete, I love your videos, but if you honestly think that this game is in any way better than the original...I just don't know where in the heck you're coming from. 😀

But again, I was simply presenting a counterargument to an assertion made in the description; I really fail to see how that could diminish the fun of the game for someone who enjoys it. Good follow up, HORRIBLE soundtrack. Seriously reverbed as all hell and the melodies give me a migraine. Final Fight 3/tough will always be my favorite. Great characters AND soundtrack in comparison to 2. Since I don't have friends I can also have a computer controlled buddy to play with ;). Beating 2 on expert is quite the challenge. Well done!

Man, imagine how much they must have paid for that. Even funnier, imagine the look on Haggar, Maki, and Carlos' faces when Rolento told them that they had to go all the way to Japan. I mean that is probably the worst flight path I've ever heard of.
