@@jcmiles5815 being super-smart isn't really necessary for something like Jeopardy though. At its heart, it's a game about facts and knowledge about, well, everything -- from Marvel movies to physics. A super-smart person without a wide range of knowledge will do poorly at the game, while a person of average intelligence who just knows a bunch of shit about a bunch of things will do well at the game. It's just that really smart people *usually* have a tendency to also have an interest in learning lots of things about lots of things so it works together.

@MasterDoge987. It helps if you have a photographic memory, doesn't always reflect a high IQ, it just means you have a good memory. I seem to recall Ken Jennings saying he has a photographic memory and he enjoyed learning and he believed that may have helped him.

Breadth, not depth. It's more about knowing some stuff about everything, rather than knowing everything about only a few topics.

I too was thinking along the line of arena, stadium, colosseum, but I couldn't figure how any of them had anything to do with the word "ring." Circus, of course. Now I know.

I got it; like Ken, I thought Circus Maximus, Ben Hur and chariot races. I took Latin in high school, but the word origin is Greek. I learned some Greek basics in 9th grade because my Spanish teacher was half Greek, half Puerto Rican and offered to teach us a little Greek.😀 It was fun.

I had coliseum (or Colosseum, since it was dealing with Rome). Blanked on the whole "Cirus/circle/ring" bit, whoops.

I thought of arena too, but when you think of circle and circumference being round like a ring, I guess they all come from the same Greek origin.

Arena is a good guess, but I knew it was wrong because that word originates from the Latin word for sand, harenae. They would cover the ground with sand to help prevent slipping on blood(or so the story goes). My guess was colosseum, but I had a feeling that was wrong, too.

It was either Circus Maximus or Coliseum, but I was having trouble coming up with the former as well as the movie Ben-Hur which made me think of it. I'm stunned that was my first thought and I would've been right! Reminds me of coming up with Mongolia and Monaco for one final jeopardy, that really threw me for a loop!

I actually knew it wasn't Coliseum just because I learned that that word was derived from the word "Colossus". Unfortunately I ended up guessing amphitheater even though it didn't seem right to me. Oh well.

Even if you’re not familiar with the Circus Maximus, you probably should know Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus in London . . .

I’m sure all the contestants know the answers to all the questions, but the one who buzzes in first is the only one who gets the chance to answer. So, it’s really about who has the quickest reflexes.

The contestants were misinformed. “Circus” is from Latin, not Greek as the clue stated. The Greek word for “ring” is “dachtylidi”.

There are several ways to arrive at the correct response: rudimentary Greek or Latin (kirkos>circle>circus), basic Roman history (Circus Maximus), and of course, plain English (ring>circle>circus). The responses given by the contestants made no sense since "arena" means sand (basic Spanish and Latin), and the non-existent "ampitheater", if it existed at all, would be a compound word (if you have to take a wild guess it would make more sense to omit the prefix altogether and just go with "theater".)

it was about something that can hold a lot of people......arena and amphitheater making "no sense" is a little extreme.....yes i know it doesn't fit the greek for ring....but they only have 30 seconds......in all sorts of question & answer games, people sometimes just give an answer even when they know it's wrong or unlikely to be right

I think she's dominating because she's faster on the buzzer. I think that's something folks on a winning streak figure out that allows them to answer fastest; knowing the answers when you do is also necessary.

The perfect game show for anyone with a doctorate in every subject, otherwise can make you feel like a dimwit. So sorry Amy was robbed, purse and phone stolen. Traumatizing for sure. Hope she recovers soon. A shame Jeopardy made her transgender status a matter of interest, could jeopardize her safety. I questioned her gender when she first appeared on the show, but nothing the show needed to discuss. What is: Discretion is the better part of valor? Trivial Pursuit might be a better game show for me.
