What I like about Ken is that he tries to make them feel better about their wrong answers. Like he points out Amsterdam has a lot of canals and about the name being French to make the Paris answer not look so bad.

He can easily see their line of logic, because remember it's not that they know everything, they know enough, and can decipher the part they don't know from what they do know (sometimes incorrectly).

Basically my logic was Rideau sounds French, Winterlude sounds English. Then I thought, what do you get if you combine French + English and the answer to that was decent healthcare... boom Canada.

True, but I imagine that "Ottawa" doesn't roll off the tongue of most people outside Canada when they think of our country's national capital. More likely they automatically think of either Toronto or Montreal.

My Mom took me to Canada in 99 and we stayed at Ottawa (Chateau Laurier) then Toronto. Remembered Rideau as part of Ottawa so I got it too.

I did not think about the French root for the canal name. I guessed "What is Helsinki?" I thought about Oslo and Stockholm, too. I went on the tangent of Northern World Capitals and went down the wrong path. In the end, I never would have gotten to the answer today.

@@willzimjohn Just like Canada, the United States is a very large country. The majority of Americans don't live anywhere near the Canadian border. Also, that border is VERY long, so most of the Americans who do live near the border aren't anywhere near this particular canal.

@@hyzercreek let's see.. one is the capital city of your neighboring country and biggest ally and the others are small towns in New York State. Americans generally know nothing about Canada. Used to work in a call centre for Sprint/Nextel and would frequently be asked things like "do you have Christmas in Canada" or "do you actually sleep in Igloos?"

Once again; the things one has to do to get on Jeopardy are HARD. Matt deserves to be up on stage as much as any contestant who goes on the show. The board just didn’t play to his strengths, and it didn’t help that he was facing a powerhouse. Just making it on Jeopardy should be achievement enough.

Figured it would be an English-speaking country because Winterlude is a combination of Winter and Interlude, and there aren't too too many English-speaking capitals that 1. Have ice and 2. Also have French words for a canal. So I went with Ottawa.

Ottawa Tourism has invited the two contestants and Ken Jennings to an all-expenses paid trip to our beautiful Capital for Winterlude. Hope they take up the offer.

@@matthiasbreithaupt1391 no we're not like Canberra. The Capital is 100% in Ontario, but a third of the metro population lives on the Quebec side of the Ottawa river. We are the only census metropolitan area in Canada that covers two provinces (However, the two towns of Lloydminster in Alberta & Saskatchewan also border one another). Come for a visit. There's a million things to do here and while I may be biased, it's a beautiful city/region.

Knew it had to be somewhere consistently cold in the winter, which disqualifies Paris and most of Europe outside Scandinavia. Of course, the climate crisis is jeopardizing Winterlude and the long-term viability of ice skating/hockey by diminishing the longevity, thickness, and quality of ice in the ponds and outdoor rinks where kids learn to skate.

It's one of the the oldest canals in North America still operating, and it's still operating the same way it did in 1832 (as in, it's all done manually, with a few exceptions made because infrastructure necessities, like permanent bridges.

I literally lived in Ottawa downtown 5 minutes away from the canal, and I never heard anyone refer to Winterlude LOL. The canal was just..."skating on the canal."

Did anyone else think it was premature for Ken to have called Genesis a second place finish? Obviously, it was the most likely outcome assuming a conventional wager and style of plag. But you never know if somebody wanted to go big and bid it all and missed it. Amy is a pretty aggressive player. Either way, congrats to Amy for Win #5 and Ken for being an excellent host!

Not knowing Ottawa cost her $18,000. It's tough to skate outdoors in Paris or Amsterdam. At least neither of them said Suva...but they probably have no clue about that one either 😛. Mind you it's getting tougher in parts of Canada too with climate change. This was the first winter ever that our Rideau canal didn't open to skating.

Honestly, my first thought was Belgium. I knew it wasn’t Paris (because that was too obvious), so my mind went to those countries around France that have significant French influence. Frankly, Canada never popped into my head.

I wonder if Canada ever popped into either player's head? Cearly they were fixated on Europe, which I imagine most people were after hearing the clue, I know I was.

Here's one problem with having Ken as host, we have to wonder whether he knows the answer, or if it's on the card. Well, I guess it may well be both, but we will always be wondering if it is something he knows, especially on a question as difficult as this one was. Rideau canal, Ottawa, Canada, it sounds like he knows about it, he talks like he knows it, but it's hard to be sure, the answer could just be written on the card.

I'm worried that Ken Jennings will be passed over replacing Alex. Jeopardy claims they're still looking for a replacement but I don't believe that because the push is on for the Hollywood darling to get it. .

He was too skilled on the buzzer for his own good. You don't buzz in if all you have is a wild guess -- and that's what Matt's tone of voice indicated on too many of his responses. Must have felt he needed to start scoring big soon or Amy would be uncatchable after the first round.

Since the clue clearly refers to a country that has French and English as major languages, Yaoundé and Victoria (the capitals of Cameroun and Seychelles, respectively) would have been more logical than Paris and Amsterdam, but given the unlikelihood of skating on a canal in those tropical settings, Canada is quite obviously the country in question. I think the contestants knew that the country in question was Canada, but not wanting to embarrass themselves by revealing that they do not know Canada's capital and guessing Montreal or the like, they had to go with a different country, hence those wild guesses.
