The four-member crew of the final space shuttle flight received instruction on the operation of slidewire baskets during emergency exit training as part of the full launch dress rehearsal known as the Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test on Launch Pad 39A on June 22 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The test provides astronauts and ground crews with an opportunity to participate in various simulated countdown activities, including equipment familiarization.

ROFL I was going to make nearly the same comment and yours was the first in line. Dang it!! LOL Shoot I'd go as high as $25 or $30 to ride that to the bottom. I remember the first IMAX film I watched was about the shuttle. They took the camera in the basket and watching it on the HUGE screen actually goofed with my brain a little. That would be sooooo cool.

Or maybe this is a better way to thread a belt, only we don't know it yet, it takes time for the space program innovations to reach the general public.

Triffty they still manuel piloted their craft for a time. Part of their official title is literally test pilots...

@F P You are confusing the terms "Astronauts" and "pilots", but first of all the two Astronauts that flew in the last Dragon capsule are NASA Astronauts that previously flew to space several times with the space shuttle, so even by your "criteria" they are Astronauts, second, from Wikipedia: "an Astronaut is a person trained by a human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft", so nobody said an Astronaut must pilot the spacecraft in order to be called an Astronaut, and in fact most of the astronauts that flew into space didn't actually piloted the craft. Astronauts job is to go into space and perform different tasks or experiments, how big is their part in piloting the craft that takes them into space is not relevant for them to be called Astronauts.

not only that but the wires are connected to the Launch pad, which even if they got into the baskets, im not certain in an emergency how long the launchpad would "exist" to hold up those wires.

Imagine over 535,000 gallons of liquid fuel catching on fire, and NASA thinks the astronauts will climb out of the shuttle (that they need help getting into) and walk to those baskets and escape to safety.

During launch the crew is wearing pressure suits, not full spacesuits, like the spacewalk one. They are designed to act as an internal atmosphere if there is cabin depressurization.

My guess, is that either they transport them on a normal truck and then lift them using crane. Or attach battery powered motor to it temporararily, and roll it up on its own power. I do not see any other way.

Winch on the tower, runs a cable out that hangs on rollers and runs down the main cable. Hook the cable to the basket once it gets down to the landing area and then release the brake on the basket before pulling it back to the 195' level.

George Mallory Everyone there know there’s 0 chance of surviving an emergency during launch but they somehow find comfort in pretending there is
@hamnavoeper
@hamnavoeper 4 жыл бұрын
@Nathan Lynch its very, very close to 0 percent chance of survival. There was no launch abort system at all, there was no quick way of getting away from the craft, there was a lot of time still spent on the launch tower before you could get away from the shuttle, so if the propellant ignited you would likely have been blown to pieces. A Soyuz on the other hand, if something goes wrong they simply fire the escape tower which pulls the ascent module high enough for parachutes to function, and you end up a large distance from the rocket in a short amount of time
