Thanks for keeping us up to date! I need to research for developing university-level courses and don’t need that deep, comprehensive dive into the literature. So these are perfect suggestions for broad overview of where the fields are heading.

Very optimistic video. I have tried both Aomni and Cognosys today for a simple search: the first took 5 minutes and then returned me 2 links that I had already visited and that did not answer my question, and the second completely invented papers as I could not find them anywhere, and the links it provided me were linked to completely different papers. 🤷‍♂

Wow. I use chatGPT pretty effectively as a software developer and loved your take on how this doesnt "write the paper for you" and that it still requires that human intuition. It is so true. AI can only enhance and compliment our skillsets, but combined with AI we can really do amazing things. Subscribed!

Thanks for this, Andy. I did my first academic AI test yesterday by setting an essay question, in my own specialisms (Cultural Theory and Psychogeography), on Bard. It gave me three drafts. Two were good, in terms of applying the theory, one not so good. None were actual essays, as they were only 500 word answers. There were no quotes or citations. One even got a book name wrong. All were generic and not very critical and the language used was not complex at all.

What do you mean with reformatting? If you write in TeX and use a template of the journal, you got a new format. - Okay, this too idealistic thinking, but it would be nice if journals had templates.

I don't know whether the capacity to understand concepts and (therefore in my view, I'm open to debate on that topic) to actually reason will lead straight to AGI, but I don't believe that AI will be able to do what most researches would like it to: to sort though a paper and its references and the references of their references (up to a specified point, whether in levels of depth or logically e.g. after the references diverges too much from the topic) and judge whether the models or theories proposed agree or not, or to reach a point whether in face of all experimental data, propose new natural laws or to revise the ones we know.

@Andy: I think conventional (and I dare say current) reccomendation or suggestion for knowing the state of the science or landscape (i e , conducting literature review) is to use two databases: a general database (e g. Web of Science and Google Scholar) and a specific database (e.g. Engineering Village and PubMed). What would you recommend/suggest in the light of these plethora AI-powered platforms to search for current literature? Do you think even stating them as sources of literature in a paper will not result in the paper being "desk-rejected"?

It will never not be bizzare to me how quick STEM research goes out of date. At 2:00 you almost sound as if you were saying "2019? Get out of here". Here in humanities we seem to be much more relaxed. My bachelor's thesis was based almost exlusively on papers written between 1890 - 1960.

Llama 2 13B is very good and promising, it's also multilingual and tuned to any language at start, which was impossible before in such small size, how Meta did it is a mystery, people will make powerful open sourse tools on it. The CPU offline working version ggml consume only near 25gb ram. Much bigger 70billions Llama 2 in my tests useless, not smarter than 13b and CPU version consume near 90gb RAM. Meta didn't released 34billion, which can be a golden middle.

hey andy, would love to hear your take on how in the West, we're supposed to let all these international students (mostly from china and india) into our universities in the name of diversity and multiculturalism, but anyone who's been to university will know that once these academics are allowed to work in western universities, all they ever do is hire ONLY those grad students/post-docs from their own country to work in their labs. how is this fair and just?

@DSL_2001

@@mrpixelgrapher Actually, it doesn't have to. For example, in "Default" mode a user can choose to approve each task result. This, of course, begs the question: Then why even use a bot? The answer: Bots are quite good at coming up with tasks that a human, even an expert in a field, may not have considered.
