I find it so off-putting when people betray themselves for the sake of antiquated traditions in desperate hopes of gaining elders' approval. Being who you are authentically should not be offensive to anyone, and if it is, let them go. Being at peace with oneself can sometimes mean letting go of antiquated societal constructs and those who would nail you to the cross for challenging such nonsense... You don't "gotta" do anything or "be" any which way. When you're an adult, in your OWN home, yes, you should be kind to others, but that's ALWAYS, and REGARDLESS OF THEIR AGE. Other than that, allowing yourself to be exactly who and how you are should simply ALWAYS be a NON-negotiable. Debating what levels of authenticity are acceptable is cheating yourself and others of truly being in your presence at all.

I always make sure my house is spotless before my MIL comes over because it drives her CRAZY. She always complains saying "quit cleaning! You have two young kids your house should not be this clean" she says I make her house cleaning skills look bad. In her defense she had 8 kids I have 2, but it still make me feel good hahah
