After finally making our way over to mainland Europe, we embarked on our road trip down to Switzerland! Our first stop on the trip was the Netherlands. A beautiful country that holds a special place in our hearts, as this is where Adriana spent many years as a child. I’ve lived my entire life in Den Haag and I can assure you weren’t the only one mistaking the bus lane at Plein 1813 for the normal road haha. Glad to see someone who’s not just visiting Amsterdam for once. Not that I have anything against the city, but the Netherlands is so much more than just Amsterdam.

It’s was seriously so nice and heartwarming as a Dutch person to see you relive your childhood moments with such warmth and nostalgia. The breakfast was spot on, only I prefer the red Hagelslag (pure chocolate) but yeah, white bread not toasted is my guilty pleasure as well. Thanks for the tribute video!

Hey guys i am dutch and yes calve pindakaas with the Gruyter hagelslag i eat it stil almost every day (58years old) i used to take a bite and then take a zip of hot tea so the hagelslag melts in your mouth, that's awesome. I’m from the USA. When I was a young girl I had a friend from Denmark named Kostin. He let me wear his wooden shoes around AND I remember once when I ate lunch at his house I was served soup and a chocolate sandwich. In between 2 slices of bread was a rather soft, thin square piece of chocolate. Like as if it was a slice of cheese. To me that memory is still strong and that was 60+ years ago. Yeah, memories can be so moving. Thank you for sharing. It is so nice!

we have a beautiful country, which I love very much... But... small, many people, many rules, and in winter it is very gray in our flat country. And in a hundred years there will probably be 10 meters of water in Amsterdam, and hopefully we can come and live in your beautiful Italian country 😉 (we will do our best to build gigantic water works, you can be sure 🇳🇱👍🏻)

I love this video. 20 years ago I lived for two years in Leiden and den Haag and this brings so many memories, especially shopping in Albert hejin! Leiden is my favourite town in the Netherlands. Now you made me thinking of going back for a visit:)

As a boy I use to live in Leiden, when to work in the Leiden main hospital, now I live in Melbourne Australia, it really brings back memories of Leiden Amsterdam and of course the rest of the Netherlands, as I was born and now, I live in Melbourne Australia, thank you both for the memories in both the Netherlands and of course Australia. Let's nitpick. For chocolate hagelslag you gotta go with the Venz brand. For the rest de Ruijter is fine. Also, I agree that the best way is to have hagelslag is on fresh (non-toasted) bread, but the bread you bought was meant to be toasted, it says so on the packaging. Even though you can eat that bread without toasting it just fine, it would be subpar compared to what else is available. The Netherlands has so much good bread, easily accessible in supermarket, but for this special occasion a trip the bakery was warranted. If you bought some non-sliced fresh white bread and spread the butter and Venz hagelslag on it, it would have been really heavenly.

That was nice. I grew up there, I will always have a soft spot for Leiden and I want to go back when I am older. It used to be a major European city centuries ago and the world just forgot about it. It was still very poor up to the 1980's but now it's booming again. We were lucky to grow up in a place like that.

After you buttered your bread, spread a bit of peanut butter on it and then hagelslag. To complete it, sprinkle a little salt on it, just to pick up the chocolate a bit. it's really good!

White bread with butter, pindakaas and hagelslag is my favorite breakfast for 60 years 😊. Appeltaart, stroopwafels, warme chocolademelk: so normal to us, but you makenit special. When our spanish friends visit us they always want to eat that as well. Also nice to see that you are visiting other cities than Amsterdam. There are so many cities much more genuine than Amsterdam! That was a blast from the past! 1984 Four of us- student nurses travelled around Europe using an Autorail card- very much on a budget- stayed in a youth hostel in Den Haag….. and sampled the bread and sprinkles for breakfast! Good times x

After trying the fries with pindasaus, go really Dutch and try patatje oorlog (or flip depending on the region) which is fries with pindasaus and mayo. It's honestly really good!

For everyone who has moved on to other places, I'm guessing most of us have or will return and so I relate to your nostalgic emotions. You should. It is spelled Hagelslag. I recommend at least trying the pure chocolate and milk chocolate. There are more flavors and even very sweet sugary ones but I would stick to the two basic chocolate ones to start. If you eat it once in a while then that’s fine, I don’t think anyone here really eats it daily

Untoasted is definitely the most common way! Tho there's not really a wrong way imo. With untoasted you get the crunch from the hagelslag and the fluffy bread. With toasted (still warm) you get the crunch from the bread and the hagelslag starts to melt so it becomes gooey, which is nice as well 😁 Basically, you can't lose 😉

Very nice video. Happy journey on your way to Switzerland. Just in case no one has mentioned it, the pindasaus on frites was sort of a happy accident/invention after the Dutch Indonesians began emigrating to the Netherlands in the 50s and 60s. It is actually sate sauce, sans the chilli pepper sambal, that is usually put on Indonesian kebab. And yes it is pretty much a Dutch thing.

After pindasaus you got to try patatje oorlog. And if that typical bread goes stale: try wentelteefjes or lost bread / pain perdu. Also a great weekend starter. I used to buy casinobrood though for tosti or pindakaas / hagelslag. Nowadays it will be whole grain / volkorenbrood. One with hagelslag/pindakaas, one with cheese/jelly. Can't get more Dutch

I grew up in Wassenaar, a village in between The Hague and Leiden. We lived on the Leiden side of the village, so my mum and I often went to Leiden when went to town. I love Leiden. Even when I left home to live on my own I moved to Leiden eventhough I studied in The Hague (it's only 12 minutes by train).

What a lovely couple the two of you are. What a nice trip you are doing. This was a sentimental journey to Leiden, but first Den Haag. Coincidentally I was in Den Haag for a party in Het Paard, a well known venue. I studied in Leiden for a short while, my Godson was born there, but I haven't been there to wander. I know some spots like the university, obviously, as well as the Museum voor Land en Volkenkunde (Museum of Land and Ethnology). My hometown is Rotterdam. Peanut butter and chocolate sprinkles is indeed what I grew up with. Try it with „ontbijtkoek" (translated as gingerbread, but that's not completely accurate, as many don't have ginger in it) which is what I still eat. Enjoy the trip🌸

In New Zealand we have " hundreds and thousands fairy bread" it will be on table at any children's birthday parties and always gets devoured fast 😋 , it's very special feeling standing on old home soil,rather refreshing on the soul ❤️❤️

hahah :) As a Dutch person, so nice to see your enthusiasm about my country. Of course, since you have spent your teenage years here there is some nostalgia that adds to your experience. But also, if you are from Sweden, that also helps. I feel close to the Nordic countries, in terms of spirit and values. Much like brothers, in a way. As you may know, the Netherlands is split south/north over the naming of French fries. In the south they are called "friet" and in the north "patat" but you also read "patat friet" sometimes, although nobody says that. I think The Hague is in "patat" territory.

14:45 For adults as well. I don't eat breakfast often, but if I do it's usually stuff like hagelslag, but I prefer it on beschuit instead of bread. Also really good with a thin layer of Nutella instead of butter! And yes, bread not toasted is the standard. 19:23 Dutch apple pie is the best ♥ About koffie verkeerd ('wrong coffee'), not sure if there is an English word for it. It's basically half warm milk, half coffee. Latte might come closest, but is made with espresso and steamed milk. us Dutchies don't go that fancy 😜 Loved the vid, and seeing how you felt being back after all those years! ❤

I am from the Netherlands, I love the Part about the Peanut sauce over Frites.... But the best Peanut sauce, you can get, you have to go to Indonesia, or Suriname..... then you get the real one. And I love you're dutch tradition , Peanutbutter with Chocolate sprinkles, oftewel Pindakaas met hagelsag, ik doe altijd nog roomboter op het broodje eronder. And not only young ones, or some older people, i am almost 50 and still eating it....... I am from Alphen aan den Rijn, born in Amsterdam, and had my Highschool also in Leiden...... That way... I love you're story, and reminds me also....

Now I’m starting to miss the Netherlands. I will try that breakfast sprinkles that you recommended the next time I visit. Dylan trying to pronounce the Dutch word was so funny! I tried learning a few phrases as a tourist but found it too hard because it’s very guttural. Anyway, dankjewel for a very nice video!

As a Dutch person, I love watching this so much ! (Esp bc I'm going to be a vanlifer too) It's hard to do vanlife in the Netherlands, but I have to stay at least 4months (every 12months) in the Netherlands, otherwise I will loose my citizenship. At least now I know a few places haha.

Ook nederlands, ook in een van. Wat is dit met elk jaar 4 maanden in NL zijn? Ik doe dit niet en heb nooit proboemen gehad. Maar dit is mischien omdat ik wel ingeschreven sta in nederland (bij mijn ouders) als mijn officieel adres, en gewoon belasting betaal in NL.

Hi I am Dutch, I also used to study in Leiden and live in The Hague. The house you lived in I exactly know where it is :-) and yes Leiden has something magical even for us Dutch. But Delft has to most magic especially on a Saturday morning. It’s nice for me to see someone who actually is not Dutch feel so connected to our culture and cities. Thank for sharing your experience. Maybe you remember that in 2006 there where big celebrations in Leiden because of the birth of Rembrandt 400 years ago, I remember partying in Leiden was so much fun. And not to forget het Leids ontzet. (3 october)

Oh yes Saturday morning is the best time for Leiden! I can still remember leaving the market with my hands full of flowers and kibbeling! 😍 It was such a wonderful place to spend time and it will always feel magical and special! I feel so lucky to be part of the group of people that got to call this place home at some point! 🤗😍

No idea why this came up in my recommendations but was pleasantly surprised when you mentioned Leiden. Brought back so many memories as I was working there in 1990. Unfortunately due to the time since I left & the relatively short time I was there means what you showed in the video didn't have any familiarity. I had a great time there & wanted to stay there for good. My first childs upcomming birth made that impossible along with my girlfriends reluctance to even move out of her road, let alone country 🤣 I often wonder how my life would have been had we moved there.

Java was an old Dutch colony and they brought some habits with them. One of them is the hagelslag. And the Dutch brought the Indonesian cuisine back to the Netherlands, that why we eat pindakaas and saté saus

Loving this video....Adriana love the look you get with each childhood memory you were having. And your breakfast with the sprinkles you will fit in if you come to Australia ...here we have "fairy bread" . normally for children's parties (but adults like it too ) it is bread, butter and hundreds and thousands (the little round candy sprinkles they put on cookies and cakes. Some will argue and say you should use sprinkles instead. (personal preference) but the sprinkles aren't as hard.
