About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on KZfaq videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

Find yourself a food grade IBC tote or used water tank. Build a tower for it out of 4x4s. 6 to 8 foot tall depending on how much water pressure you want. Plumb with hose fittings and add a water timer with drip irrigation. Fill it up every few days (or whatever it ends up being) with water from the stream and enjoy mostly hands off hassle free watering.

put a barrel in the green house maybe it won't freeze as quick or at all , fill it once a week or as needed . that way you won't have to run the pump every day to water

I would have a bit deeper of a pool to get water out and install a one way valve so it holds water in your feed pipe to the pump. But can’t use it durning the cold times. Gas pumps are nice and tend to move a good volume of water even up hill. They are great for areas that flood a lot and have to pump out low areas and basements. If you look up “trash pumps” most will be gas. And you might be able to find a hose for your feed line that is flexible for that freebie pump. 👍🏻

Place the pump close to the stream with short as possible pipe for best suction. Maybe you can find one of those IBC totes that hold 330 gallons then only need to.pump once in a while to refill.

Thanks for the video. A suggestion for your love/dislike relationship with the silage tarps: use sand bags to weigh it down. Place them every 4-6 feet along the edge and a few scattered in the middle. Works well for us.

What a nice gift from your neighbor. It just takes time to prime the pipe from Creek to Pump. You could use a Tote to protect your Pump. Drill Intake and Outtake Holes woul have to remove Lid to run but would keep Pump Dry and Portable. I'd get Quick Connect for the Hose End. Tote could be big enough to store 50 feet of Hose. This way that Hose is dedicated to the Pump only. Works Great just have to make sure Tube from Creek to Pump always drains in winter. Merry Christmas. God Bless and Peace Be With You All

Jason, heads up from an old Navy Mechanic who burned out a pump once, that's likely a centrifugal pump which doesn't self prime very easily. Centrifugal pumps are both cooled and lubricated by the water that flows through them, so extended periods (several minutes perhaps) of time running waiting for a prime can shorten the life of the pump as it wears out waiting for lubrication. Notwithstanding the other comments I saw about a needed check valve (which prevents the priming water that you pour in from running into the creek) "Prime" helps drawing a vacuum [on the creek] and the higher up the pump is from the water, the greater the vacuum that is needed and the less efficient the pump is pumping water out the other end. Moving the pump closer to the creek's edge (lower in elevation) likely places it more at risk from floods, but it will pump better from there. God bless you guys. (v/r Fellow Southern Ca refugees)

grew up in NZ irrigating crops - come the summer I would set up irrigation either a couple of over the top/ overhead sprinklers or low ground sprinklers not drip as I think the pressure from the pump might be to much and turn the pump on for an couple of hours in the evening and water what needs to be watered

Put a check valve at the bottom then move the pump up to where you would like it. The check valve will stop the pump from draining and you'll not be running down to the creek to start and stop. Remember a transfer pump does not like to be restricted...

I would spend a few more dollars the next time you buy a water hose. I buy the black rubber hoses they are a little more but I have had some for over 25 years and still work like new. I turn them on in the spring and sometimes do not turn off until late fall. Like your channel ,keep going strong and stay healthy. Merry Christmas to you all.

How much head (vertical drop) is in your stream as it crosses your property? The reason I ask is that it may be suitable for a waterwheel to make electricity or pump water. It looks like the flow would be workable it just depends on how much head the stream has.
