When in Doubt about using a new machine, First read the “Destructions” ( Instructions) LOL. It makes the job Soooo much easier and less stressful. Howard Brush put in Very Comprehensive instructions that were inadvertently tossed aside. A lesson to learn for new users.

I wish you had shown the 2 pieces of wood as I may have ideas what they are used for. When rolling your bat off the drum, you can, some people don't, roll it put genlty as you turn the drum in revers putting a piece of tissure paper in the roll as you wind it up on the stick/roller, what-cha-call-it, lol and then unroll and you can them stack your bats without them inadvertly felting. Do order the 120 tpi ro the 72 tpi? Just sharing, Peace

I got the 72 tpi. I have used a piece of paper to roll the batt around, but I prefer to simply pull it off without rolling at all. Depends on the type of batt I'm carding. I am getting much better

be very carefull about putting to much fiber into the licker in. Mine ended up with a broken pin that keeps the main drum from slipping and I have to repair it

Do you still like your drum carder??

I do like it. I got the lower tpi so it does not want to card fine fleece all that well. Also discovered this drum carder does not like old lanolin. I have a fresh GFN fleece I want to try carding raw. I wish I could use another brand or two and compare. For carding fine fleeces with least amount of frustration, I like to hand card and roll sideways so all fibers are aligned striaght, draft them out and put them through the drum carder. This makes for one-pass smooth batts every time. I am also experimenting with blending and painting and such. SO much fun!!! In short, YES I still love my carder!

Fairily Fiber Fun Have you found the triple drum to be helpful? Is the quality what you hoped for?

I wish the top licker drum did not exist but have not been able to remove it.. makes it is hard to clean the bottom licker-in. However, the top licker does pull a lot of neps out which is it's purpose. Since I haven't tried any other drums, I have no idea if it is the quality I hoped for. do you have a way to try out different drum carders? Each one is different and handles a certain category of fiber better than others. If you have fine fleece, definately go for a higher tpi (120 or better) main drum. If you like to do a lot of blending of commercial tops and make art batts, the Howard Brush Co. standart tpi drum carder should be perfect. You get what you pay for... if you want a high-quality drum carder, you are going to have to pay high dollar for it. I'm not sure if I would recommend this carder or not. Again, wish I could compare with how other carders behave This carder gets the job done. Merino, Cormo, and Targhee need a higher tpi to card with ease. I hand pick my wool then paint onto the drum. Remove from half-full drum and paint again. I then strip, draft, and feed back through drum 3-4 times before I have a semi-smooth batt. More than that and I get a lot of nepps. I have the standard which is 90 tpi on main drum. If I hand card lightly then send through drum carder I get less neps. Most of that is the fiber being too fine for my drum. A drum carder is not at all like hand cards. I prefer 72 tpi hand cards, but should have gotten the 120 tpi drum carder (for same fibers). I say give it a try, but get the 120, not the 90.

Fairily Fiber Fun Yeah... I have 30 lbs of Rambo/targhee fleeces to process and I’m not sure which cloth-medium or fine and which carder- brother or Howard!?! You have helped so much and I thank you so much for your time!!

No problem! It is so hard to answer questions when I am so very new to drum carders! I looked up Rambo fleece and it is another fine fleece. So, stay away from low tpi carders! :) Honestly, I would vote for the Brother as I've heard so much good about them. The Howard does not hold tons of fiber. I think I managed to squeeze 2-2.5 ounces on mine and that was non-blended art batts. I tend to aim for 30 grams of fleece batts. I'm not sure how much fiber the brother holds, but if they have anything finer than 120 tpi, you should get it. Also, if Brother only has one licker, that will make life much easier on you during cleaning. ... Oh, if you do get the Howard, get an extra clamp. The carder likes to wiggle out of it's one clamp and drives me crazy
