The history of American aviation is replete with projects that were never brought to life. Standing out among them is the engineering marvel the YF-23, which once promised to redefine the future of air superiority.
So why did the United States abandon this aircraft, and can we expect its reincarnation in the future, perhaps as part of another country’s air force?
We’ll be covering that in today’s video!

As a Japanese I heard this only as a rumor and without tangible info. Japan wants to more or less build it's own fighters because or else the technology will be lost due to retirement of engineers involved in developing the F-2. I believe that's why Japan has joined with Britain and Italy with their project (Which is officially announced by the JDF).

For an aircraft which lost the competition, the YF-23 simply won't go away. It's definitely a beautiful aircraft, and had it been selected, could have perhaps been an even better aircraft than the YF-22 w/further development. It's also been said that it is closer to a Gen6 aircraft rather than that of a Gen5. Also too, the YF-22 had a lot of issues that needed to be addressed, even copying things from the YF-23. They even called on Northrop engineers for help to fix some things on it. I'd certainly like to see its rebirth by Japan. The problem w/these stealth aircraft though, they're very expensive to maintain and fly, due to a host of issues, but especially their composites and the special RADAR absorbing coatings on them. As such, I'm glad to see the interest in purchasing the F-15EX, in order to do missions not requiring stealth. It helps to reduce the flight times and wear and tear on the F-22/F-35's. Technology wise, the 15EX is an entirely new aircraft from the ground up, w/fly-by-wire, electronics, computers, and a more advanced RADAR than what the F-22/F-35 have. Plus, it's both faster, just as manurable, if not more so, than the F-22, even w/o trust vectoring, carries more weapons, has greater range, has two engines vs. just one, and should be less costly to maintain overall. While not stealth, but w/the help of RADAR absorbing paint and such, it should be better than previous F-15 models, w/a smaller signature. In all essence, it's a Gen4.5 Plus aircraft. As for needed training, those experience w/the F-15C, D, and E models should be able to switch over fairly easily, including the Pilots.

The ATF procurement director was interviewed. His summary was both airframes were capable of meeting all the requirements posed to them - this implies the decision was not based on flight capabilities, but other things as mentioned - the overruns for the B2, keeping competition in the space, manufacturability, risk, etc. There are also inaccuracies in the commentary - the F22 has a ceiling well in excess of 60k feet, so probably the same as the YF23; there is no way large tail planes can match maneuverability of thrust vectoring. I personally think the FY23 looks much better. However, his final summary - maybe the loss of the contract was a blessing in disguise is accurate I believe ... the B21 raider was the program to win. I can't wait to see the NGADs ... and how the US will again push the boundaries.
@ravissary79
@ravissary79 2 ай бұрын
While both exceeded demands on the program, they had slightly different aptitudes. At highter speeds apparently the 23 was better as turning with those massive surfaces, and more stealthy too, also faster... but part of the point of a tactical fighter is dogfighting, and with the flanker and fulcrum both being fast and agile, excellent dog fighters, i think the airforce wanted the better dog fighter, since other requirements were at least met either way. Also, apparently, the 22 was a kind of total package of advanced technology, largely because of how Lockheed skunkworks did their innovation. The 22 reflected a lot og systemic advancements you couldn't see, from airframe construction to the 1 piece bubble canopy, etc. The 23 on the otherhand borrowed bots here and there from older aircraft to keep costs low and speed up the development of the new technologies on display, grom the canopy, seats, landing gear, etc... it was a kind of Frankenstein monster. To be sure, this means if they'd had more time, or reworked these parts for production, it would have been EVEN BETTER, but during the test this lead to little problems, like the canopy, and it made them look unprepared, unprofessional, coupled with a lack of polished marketing, it definitely lead to a bias based on the association many people have between little problems and a suspicion that bigger problems might arive as well if pushed. Its like a job interview, if your shirt isnt ironed or youre late, it foesnt mean you aren't smarter or more qualified, but it telegraph that you don't have it together and could be less stable, less commited, less competent, from unseen issues.

USAF should have actually accepted both for combat purposes. The Navy should have had a proposal to accept the F-23 as it would have definitely benefited for it's long range. Also proposed thrust Vectoring & being it had larger & deeper weapons bays. It could have had rotary type weapons bays for more weapons systems. Plus had a few for dedicated Bombers. F-23 faster, stealthier & longer ranges. What's Not to like. Entergrated technology with the F-22, F-35, F-23, F-15, F-16 & F-18 even with B1 - B2 & the Raider bombers OMG. It would have been a huge Advantage. Even as a Super secret Interceptor just make it 20% larger being it had no radar cross section. & Use it with Black Ops.

Many experts have repeatedly said the YF-23 was a much superior airplane in critical factors, and in others it matched or was slightly less than the YF-22. But overall it was a better platform that had many "future" proof characteristics - which is most likely why is was more expensive in its day. I believe the reason why it was more expensive has everything to do with this "future" proof characteristic. Meaning, that it was a platform ahead of its time, and easily pushing or surpassing the technology of its day to the max. For that reason, I believe they shelfed it until the technology caught up, as well as the weaponry - which both have exponentially matured in today's current environment. I believe the YF-23 has been brought out of long-term storage, and has now been fitted with all the technology it was meant to have in the first place. We are about to see it in all its glory, modified, and updated with all of our current tech, as well as cutting edge tech we have not even seen yet. The world is about to be shocked. Oh yeah...., and then there is the other 6-th gen fighter that is being built too. Double whammy.

It actually had everything to do with the Air Force constantly changing the scope of the project. USAF kept adding stuff it wanted. If you look at the development run between the YF23 and the YF22 the YF22 got a later start, so they had more of the scope of what the AF was looking for and didnt need to re-engineer the new scope into the project.

It’s amazing how the aircraft that never make it past prototype are always viewed as being the best and a missed opportunity such as the YF-23, F-20 Tigershark, F-16XL, TSR-2, XB-70 Valkyrie, CF-105 Arrow, F-108 Rapier and no doubt many more. The reality is if the YF-23 had won and been built we’d be lamenting the missed opportunity of the YF-22. Had the F-20 been built it would have been at the cost of export sales of F-16’s and with out the volume would that aircraft have ever been developed into the capable machine it is today? If the F-16XL had been built there would have been no F-15E Strike Eagle and we’d be posting ill informed vids on what a missed opportunity that was! Most of these planes look cool, have outrageous Top Trump winning specs but the reality is they were never fully developed so we’ll never truly know. Otherwise it’s all wishful thinking, rose tinted glasses and at very best anecdotal. The YF-23 never made it, 30 years on they’re not going to go build it now!

I think it could be pretty capable. It is likely a bit more expensive to build than the F-35 and its VTAL and STOL capabilities never really worked. If they were just using as a standard multirole and they could get some engines for it for a reasonable price and shoehorn in radar and targeting systems then it could be a capable aircraft. The US though spends a lot of time proving out aircraft and this could be very costly... and they likely would only make a few hundred so the unit cost would be pretty expensive. The more they could make it with off the shelf parts or in house the better though. I know it was a pretty complicated system to make that wing though. I question in the end how much Japan would actually make of these and how much they would cost. I would think they would be better off making stuff like Tomahawks instead.

I don't like the profile of the yf of 23 trailing edge It looks inherently unstable which maybe can be compensated for with computer stabilization but why? And if the control surfaces are constantly correcting for instability, it could become actually less efficient. Plus if anything happened It would go into an uncontrolled tumble.
@hw8991
@hw8991 7 ай бұрын
It is indeed less safe from a static stabilizing design, but there are a couple of advantages. An inherently unstable design can allow for faster control response. Whether that is the case with this aircraft I don't know, but it would not surprise me. The trade-off with small adjustments compared to a self-stabilized design is to a "flying wing's" benefit for fuel efficiency. While this aircraft isn't a pure flying wing, I think the correct term is "blended wing," it does have parallels. I'm not an expert; I'm relaying what I've seen on the subject myself. Here's a few videos I found interesting: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mqipqbN63q_Gink.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a59xa5CjsLjXXWQ.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z6ugg8d6nLrdkmw.html

Well we now know for sure the specs on both these jets are bogus, the F22 FOR DAMN SURE thanks to some cheesy ass Chinese balloons and the shooting down of said balloons with the F22 supposedly at a height of 60,000 + feet for verification and then shot down with an AIM9 sidewinder air to air short range missile. Now if it did that with a service ceiling of 50,000 per this video then I suspect both fighters have a service calling of 65,000 feet at least. We should have fielded both of these fighters but when you have the new EX 15 in your stable at half the price, what is the need.

The YF-23, by all measure seems to be the most even match for the J-20.

F22 is far superior to the J20 as well.

Both the F-22 and F-23 should have been built and used. And if we didn't keep giving our money away to foreign countries, we would have plenty of money to spend on our own defense.

Too expense, the YF23 was vastly superior and should have been chosen.

Much of the black widow tech was cross decked into the B21 raider believe it or not.

@@mitchjames9350yet it lost the competition. The internal systems would have been the same, the air force had specs for all internal systems, the contract was for an airframe to house the systems. The YF-22 & YF-23 had none of the systems, they were just to compare the airframes. The YF-22 won out because it was more manuverable.

@@kdrapertruckerand yet in the end, the plane we needed didn't really need to be. The YF22 was chosen for a role that was never really there in this modern world. But hindsight is 20/20. The 23 sure would be helpful now though, with its increased range, internal space and being stealthier. Oh well. At least we can say we have the most badass stealthy fighter in the world lol

The YF23 is definitely more aesthetically pleasing than the F22. It should be revived and brought out of hibernation.
