I fish by myself most of the time. I noticed that any breeze would blow me around on a smaller private lake I fish. After getting a small 3.5 hp gas motor I didn’t have the problem as it acts like rudder, as others have described. I’ll use the trolling motor for easing around and the gas for longer moves to different water. Most of my fishing now is on big lakes and the gas motor is very handy. Plus, I like have both a gas motor and an electric…just in case.

I'm thinking my next major upgrade to that boat will be a small gas / electric motor. I've solved the control issues by installing a rudder, but as you said, I sure would love to have a backup to the trolling motor. Thank you for watching! I very much appreciate it when y'all view the channel.

Make a rudder as suggested. You won't believe the difference. I made mine with two license plates screwed to an aluminum pipe with metal roof screws and four zip ties to shape your rudder from the existing holes in the plates. Drill the top of the pipe with a couple of small holes. Screw pipe into a short 2x4 and clamp it to the metal on the stern of the boat. Game changer. A 60 Amp surge protector will help from frying your wires from the 100 ah lithium battery
@yakkittymack
@yakkittymack 8 ай бұрын
Good tips, thank you. Where would I install the surge protector? From the wires coming out of the boat before I connect to the battery or on the trolling motor end?

New Sub, really enjoyed the 3 part series. I've had a Quest Angler 10 a couple of years. I really like the crate under the seat set up. Dont give up on fishing this boat by yourself its all about weight distribution. You may even consider putting the motor in the rear with an extended handle.

Thank you for the kind words and for subscribing. I appreciate you! I'm thinking you are right about finding a way to make it work solo. I took my dad fishing this past weekend at a lake I had been to many times in my kayak. We fished the usual spots I would normally fish but without much luck. But because we were in the boat we were able to travel further and we finally found where they were hanging out. I would've never gone that far in my kayak. That realization makes me open to the idea of using it more by myself for sure.

Use those old thinner wires to tape to & pull through heavier gauge wire. I ran all wiring for my PA12 electronics this winter when I finally bought some. I use a 8guage marine grade wire from my DIY battery box in back of my kayak. Ran it down though my haul up to the front hatch. That 8 guage wire connects to a dual bus bar that distributes power to my echomap Ultra 106sv, lvs34 system & steady cast heading sensor. I have same voltage at my bus bar & units as directly from my battery. Proper guage wire makes all different, it can cause heat & issues if wiring is insufficient.
@yakkittymack
@yakkittymack 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for commenting, I appreciate it. The wiring running through the boat currently is 8 gauge and I think the wires on the motor are 6. I could buy 6 gauge and pull it through, but I'm not sure if the "built-in connector" would be reusable. Most of all this stuff is over my head to be honest.

Hey there, the seats are Pelican brand and they are called Ergo 360. They come standard on the Bass Raider 10e NXT. That's Pelican's upgraded version of the standard 10e. The seats and colors of the boat are the only difference between the two. You can order the seat from Pelican. Hope this helps and thank you for the comment!

Hey Jeff, I'm Greg and I would like to say that you're doing great job at your channel, keep it up. I watched all the videos on Bass Rider since I'm looking for everything about it. Informations that you've shared about the engine/wires compatibility, a drift of this thing and also leaning forward while solo fishing are very much appreciated, thanks. You made a very nice setup overall. What I can't find is a good comparison video to BPS Pond Prowler 10 (*EDIT: and/or Bass Hunter 120), I would be very glad to see an honest and deep review side by side. I'm especially interested in a real stability test of many similar boats or at least the Pelican alone, like really trying to tip it over by pushing hard on the very edge of the boat. Have you seen videos like this maybe? I know that you're no swimmer so I won't ask you to do it yourself ;) but every suggestion or source would be very nice. Thank you.

@grzesiek7358 Hello Greg, nice to meet you! Thank you very much for the compliment and for watching the channel! I was just thinking a couple of days ago about how cool it would be to do a comparison between the Raider and the Prowler. I'm going to see if I can find someone local that has the Prowler that I can use. Prior to buying the Raider, I watched a KZfaq video with 2 guys standing on the side of the boat and it didn't flip. Pretty impressive. I can tell you as a non-swimmer, it's stability is fantastic! No worries from me at all. In fact, my dad is also a non-swimmer and I took him out for the first time a few months ago and he was nervous when he saw the boat but, after a day on the water, he was amazed by how stable it felt. The drift is solved by adding a rudder, that's a must have accessory! I can tell you I considered the Prowler, as I live very close to a Bass Pro, but I liked the feel of the Pelican plastic better. It feels a little "softer" like maybe it would be less prone to cracking. The best comparison I can think of is wheeled trash can. A Rubbermaid plastic versus a cheaper brand. The softer feel of the Rubbermaid has more give and playability, making it more durable if that makes sense? Thanks again for watching and let me know if you have any questions.

@@yakkittymack Hi, thanks for another input about materials and stability. I would be fishing in a standing position often and also by myself without fellow balancer on the rear seat. Yeah, a proper side by side test would be great, I keep my fingers crossed to make it happen. I consider outboard petrol engine and I could attache a retractable padle to it as a rudder/keel. My general problem is that in my market which is EU, not many of this boat type models are avaliable. Sadly it's not a thing in Europe I guess. I'm in Poland where I can find only Bass Rider 10E and here it's +50% of the US price by current dollar's exchange rate. Not fun but I could live with that if the boat was really fine for me. That's why I'm looking for a proper review including attempted sinking the boat.
@yakkittymack
@yakkittymack 5 ай бұрын
@@grzesiek7358 I can say with confidence that the Bass Raider would be very hard to tip or sink. The hull is filled with foam blocks so even if the hull takes on some water it will still float. In fact, I think the only way this boat would sink is if it filled with water, but any boat of any size would do that. You would fall out of the boat before it would turn over. Standing is easy and in fact, a lot of people build standing decks that they use for a foot control trolling motor. What type of water do you plan on using the boat? Lakes, ponds, rivers?
@grzesiek7358
@grzesiek7358 5 ай бұрын
@@yakkittymack Bigger ponds and smaller lakes. Nothing too crazy in terms of wave height. While im saying about 'trying to sink the boat' during the test, what I mean is to see how the boat behaves in rough conditions and extreme situations. How easy it would be to fall out. I've seen a lot of mods with decks and pedals but I dont feel like I need it, I would rather stay a bit lower with my feet and sit in a standard chair position.
@yakkittymack
@yakkittymack 5 ай бұрын
@@grzesiek7358 I understand. I have no interest in a deck either, I was trying to better understand how you intended to use the boat. I have taken some large wake from passing boats, but never any extreme conditions. Usually if a boat passes and is creating wake, I face the waves head on and don't take a hit from the side.

The 55# motor is better for fighting wind and current and if you compare the motor housing size you will see the motor on the 55lb unit is a much larger and beefier unit than the 30# models. Where you really notice a difference is get the "max versions which offer constant variable speed rather than set speed settings as you can dial the motor speed to exactly fit what you want. Also speed wise the larger motor should gain you the same speed as the smaller unit at a lower speed setting again pulling less amps. Another advantage is the variable maximizer models at lower speed consumes a lot less batter power than the 5 speed models as well. You really want to find out what you are missing out on get a trolling that includes GPS spot lock technology and boat positioning or worrying about drifting into the bank while fighting a fish or tying on a lure is a thing in your rear view mirror. That feature does add quite a bit to the cost of the trolling motor but if you ever use one you will wonder why it took you so long to buy one, they are game changers when it comes to enjoying fishing out of a boat on a windy day or in current. I would not consider getting a smaller motor because of the boats wiring size but rather I would upgrade to a larger gauge wire to better match your better trolling motor. I agree on getting the 100amp battery over aa 50 amp battery as running out of juice is a no no and honestly even on a lipo4 you do not want to drag the battery all the way down to nothing for battery longevity. Many times the more expensive brands of the lipo batteries are not that much of an increase in performance over batteries selling for half the price. There are a number of you tubers who really test a lot of these batteries and pull them down inspecting the components and build quality and will tell you which ones are a good value and which ones to avoid. The guy linked below is one good source for battery testing and evaluation. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q52kp5qfzMyncY0.htmlsi=yKiVJ8sq6d830jTf And also if you have not done so already add a rudder to the rear of that boat, it is well documented that these boats of this type design do not track well and the wind will push them around in circles without a rudder on the boat. And sometimes spending extra money buys you features and insurance that are worth their cost, saving a dollar here and there is not always the best decision in setting up something like a boat. Enjoy your boat, its getting you out on the water lipping a few!

@billwiley7216 I can honestly say that I just learned more about trolling motors reading your comment than I did in all of my previous research combined! Thank you. I love the idea of the spot lock feature and variable speed. I found out the frustrating way about the need for a rudder and I added one about a month ago and did a video on that too. So my latest frustration with this boat is going up into cover to free a hung lure. I hate having to lift the motor up so it doesn't hit the bushes or stumps and then try to free the snag with one hand while trying to use the motor in the up position to maneuver the boat. How do you deal with that situation? I agree with you about being careful cheaping out on some items, I mentioned the cost savings because my kayak is my first priority and in my opinion, you just can't beat fishing from a nice kayak. Thanks again for watching and commenting. I appreciate you!
@billwiley7216
@billwiley7216 6 ай бұрын
@@yakkittymack sometimes you have to lift the troller even on a dedicated bow mount model to get into the brush to free a hang up just the nature of the beast. I looked into Kayaks but being an older senior just do not think one would really work well for me and honestly the kayaks I liked such as the Bonafide SS127 by the time I set it up the way I wanted I would be in it a lot deeper cash wise into it than I would something like one of the Pelican Bass Raiders. Also as I have aged I have really gotten more into ultra lite and crappie fishing rather than hunting them big ole girls. A lot of fun catching a 1 1/2-2lb river smallmouth on true ultra light gear with 2lb test line and small trout sized jigs and baits. I actually sold a 14ft semi v jon boat a few years ago as I was having serious health issues and a guy finally talked me out of it and I let it go like a fool. I had that set up perfectly and now my health is somewhat better and want to try to get back on the water a little this coming year. I enjoyed your content and remember in one video if I remember right you said you were a non swimmer, in that case I would not want to be in a Kayak rather than a more stable wider boat!

@@billwiley7216 it's good to hear you are feeling up to getting back on the water. You are 100% correct about the cost of a well rigged kayak and the stability of the Bass Raider. The stability is fantastic and your memory serves you well, I am a non-swimmer. Having the Bass Raider has allowed me to go fishing with my dad for the first time in over 30 years so in that regard it is priceless. I might have to get me an ultralight combo and fish for some crappie. I haven't done that since my teen years. Being in the south, they tell me the crappie fishing is good in the winter. Thanks again for watching. I don't make videos to try and make money. I make them for fun and to socialize with people I would otherwise never know. I really appreciate your comments and insight.
