I entirely understand your comments about the difficulty of working on a customer's car whilst making a KZfaq video about it. Having said that, I've really enjoyed the Merc W123 story because (a)it's such an unusual car and (b)you don't claim to be a professional expert - although you are surely getting there. Thank you.

Great progress and determination to get this very challenging project over the line. I may be in the minority but I'm a Merc man so don't want this series to end and you to go back to the Beemers! For the footwell sound deadening I think I would've removed all from the floor pan up and put in a large uniform replacement piece of Dynamat rather than make infill pieces but the skill in doing the latter is nice to see.

try using a magnetic stirrer in the passivating solution- helps keeps fresh solution on the surface to be plated, and get it into crevices on the piece.

Another great vid. I always really like it when people point out when things went "wrong" for them in vids as sometimes, when doing work myself, it can feel like things go so smoothly for everyone else and yet i get nothing but problems so it's nice to be reminded every so often that vids on youtube etc.. are edited and likely have most of the troubles cut out.

Working on long tedious projects can and do often reach a point where you just want it over! I run into the same phenomena in my work too. I push through and then only take on very small jobs for a while. It can be very daunting and grueling. But as you said there is light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck.

There's always so much hidden repair work to be done that you can't account for until you're into it. And not doing it because the customer doesn't want to pay for it just makes for bigger issues down the road.

I used to really enjoy running a big stack of parts off to the platers. Even more enjoyable was going to collect them all shiny and new-looking. Never EVER considered buying all the gear to do it myself a viable option - let the specialists specialize!

That Mercedes has come a really long way from where it was when you first received it. People think it’s easy but as a person that restores old Lawn mowers and tractors I say it’s not. I’ve got a 1966 John Deere 210 that I’ve been restoring now for 2 years and I’ve got more work into that than I’ve put in anything else. Sure it’s a pain in the ass sometimes and you want to set it on fire and walk away…. But when you’re done it is very well worth the pain and swearing. Just the compliments you will get is just a big weight from the project taken off your shoulders.

Good stuff as always. A couple of notes - it's critical to use a metal roller to apply the sound proofing to properly adhere it. For the old material, place dry ice on top of it to help remove it cleaner and faster - and obviously make sure it's well ventilated. Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Cheers! Yep there is alway's much much more work when restoring a classic car, ask me how I know, I've been working on cars since the early eighties.. Eons is a great way to describe the time for zinc plating! I've been zinc plating hardware for basically an entire SAAB 900 at this point (was supposed to be an easy engine out, engine in rebuild), and I should have counted the amount of days I've spent, but it has to be close to 12 or 14 at this point. I know your pain well. I've also had to redo about 15% of the parts as I've had failures in the layers due to old degreaser that I should have changed out but I was too cheap. Also, saw you have the pickeling step probably with a very mild 1% sulphuric acid dip, but I've had a bunch of luck with a step to help clean rust and residual material off with a strong muriatic acid step. I usually save the pickeling between the plating step and the chromating step. I'm sure your plating system may be a bit different as well. If it helps, I usually knock off any heavy rust with the wire wheel or sandblaster briefly, then dip my parts for about 20 minutes in the muriatic acid, rinse them in a distilled water and baking soda mix to neutralize the acid, and then wire wheel them again for a brilliant, pure mild steel shine. Just make sure you use a HDPE bucket and lid cause that acid will eat through anything else. A well ventilated area with a respirator is also required.

Butyl based "sound" deadeners are really just vibration dampners. Sound absorbing is usually done by something like Melamine foam or 3M Thinsulate. Second Skin Damplifier Pro is another product that would go a long way (under carpet) to make this thing feel like a Mercedes. lol

@@RestoreIt Perhaps I can save you some time and trouble. Sound deadening is largely misunderstood because it's hard to sort through what is simply marketing vs. misinformation vs. actual fact. I'm certainly no acoustic engineer, but I fell down this rabbit hole myself some time ago on a project. Here's what I've learned... For brevity's sake there are 3 categories of sound deadening. As JayinMI already mentioned, there are vibration dampeners and sound absorbers. The third category is sound _blockers._ *Vibration dampeners* prevent materials from resonating. Think of a tuning fork "ringing" out... that's resonance. Now imagine a tuning fork that's been dipped in bitumen. The extra mass clinging to the tuning fork changes the frequency in which the metal resonates, effectively "preventing" it from doing so (at least for our purposes). The satisfying "upscale" sound you hear when a luxury car door closes is mostly due to vibration dampening in the door. This is what your Dynamat is for, but more on that later. *Sound **_absorbers_* prevent sound waves from reflecting the way they do off of hard or non-porous surfaces. This is why music studio walls are covered in acoustic tiles, and why singers don't record songs in the back of an empty Ford Transit. Finally, *sound **_blockers_* provide an actual barrier to prevent sound wave transmission _into_ the airspace by "decoupling" that airspace from the transmissible surface. That sounds confusing, but it's quite simple in practice. The car's interior is the airspace and the transmissible surface (for road noise, for instance), is the floor. By "separating" the interior airspace from the metal floor, you effectively prevent sound waves from entering the airspace at all. Thus, overall road noise is reduced. As you can imagine, effective sound deadening for a vehicle may require a combination of all three types BUT the most cost-effective solution for a car consists of vibration dampening tiles (CLD tiles) properly installed where needed, and a sound blocker on the floor. You can spend a LOT of time and money trying to achieve perfection but there are diminishing returns. Ultimately it is a car, which is a poor acoustic environment no matter what. The basics will get you 85% of the way there. Last thing (I promise), *the Dynamat you already put in the car MUST be rolled in order to work properly.* You do NOT need to cover the entire floor for an effective installation (research CLD tile installation), but a roller must be used to bond the material to the floor or else it's basically a waste of money, materials, and effort. Have you considered a water blaster? I have only ever tried it once, but man they sure are lovely and dont remove paint, if setup right. Check M539 Restorations, he got one too.

HA - "I have no idea how I did this...." -- HA - been there - done that - many times with the same type of thought - HA - but usually accompanied me calling myself out with a - "F-CKWIT - how did you do that?" - HA. Your sort of work is the sort that I hope to teach my kids working on the weekends on our 'family projects - lots of 'home remedy' type work and that is exactly the type of skills I hope they can also develop and have some fun. A bit of friendly advice - you may need to learn how to 'read' the shape of the areas and hence this dictates which way you should sand the surface. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

I’d like to point out that early on I asked for good footage of the sand blasting. That said, I think the couple seconds of good footage combined with just getting it done make for good video. Don’t make a huge effort to record all of the blasting.

Personally, I enjoyed the Mercedes restoration. But looking at your videos is clear that tool restoration get more views (like 10 times more views) and restoring a tool is far more easier that restoring a car.

You'd probably make more money buying, restoring, selling these cars than doing them for customers anyway, and right now is the time to cash in on old cars with gas prices and used/new car prices so high.

0:55 I think your assessment is flawed; There are TONS of collectors out there that CAN afford a full unbolt restoration; and they will hand you a blank cheque to do it, once they see the level of detail you put into your work. with the coming ICE ban coming plenty of owners will want restoration services. Time to start scaling up, Put your name out there find an apprentice videographer to film and edit content for you; if you have a Community College nearby ask around; there are still people out there who want to learn and willing to put in the time and elbow grease. Finding someone that does ethical work is never easy....
