We were finally able to shoot the 100+ year old Kodak Brownie #3 box camera! It took months of trial and error, and some parts from Amazon and eBay, but we finally had it ready to shoot film and headed to Devils Tower in northeast Wyoming to shoot the first roll.

I guess the contortion class paid off that day! 😂 I’m glad to have you partnered up for these adventures. Now to fix the front plate and try another roll… Where to next time?

That is awesome! This camera was gifted to me by a friend to use as a shelf ornament in the backdrop of videos along with an old Polaroid Land camera. They both served that purpose for a while and then for some reason I started wondering if it was possible to still shoot either even though I hadn’t shot film in decades. That led me down a rabbit hole and the discovery that at least a few people still shoot the old box cameras. It was a fun project and we do plan to try another roll after a few more tweaks on the camera.

This was fun. Like many, I had a Kodak brownie as my first camera but not the box like this.

I have followed you for years and this may sound silly but, sometimes I think you're living the life that I have Imagine. "If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." Henry David Thoreau I stopped at dreams. Few possessions ease of effort to travel, family just close enough and the love of photography and old cameras. Thank your for your efforts.

Impeccable photos. Inventive creativity. Incredible inspiration. Thank you so much for getting it exactly right and taking perfect original photos as if they were taken in 1911. Wow.

Thanks so much for the kind words! Once I learned that it was still possible to shoot these old cameras I just had to try. Devils Tower seemed like an appropriate venue for this camera. The front cover is a bit loose which might be affecting the amount of light so we will fix that and try again. Mostly I expected some overexposure anyway as the light meter app on my iPhone was showing that. We did think about holding a filter in front of the lens, but decided to just try the first roll to see what happened. We did think that they looked like pretty much every early 1900s photo we have ever seen so were pleased overall.

Use 100 iso film next time or use a three stop ND filter or shoot on a overcast day with the 400 speed film. It would be cool to see some new mirrors fitted and another shoot.

Fantastic!!! I currently have a roll of film in a Brownie Hawkeye. I think I get 8 exposures and I'm at #6. I know I've messed up at least one with double exposure (not advancing the film!!). Just getting used to the weirdnesses of these types of cameras after using an 80's Nikon SLR. So I am glad to see someone who has taken the challenge. I think that 2nd one of Devil's Tower is fantastic. I expected the photos to be square though. I believe my camera will shoot square pictures. Thank you for taking us on the journey with you!

I recently got hold of a Brownie No. 2. Which is a 120 camera. Though, right now I'm waiting for a take up spool and some film. I have 120 film for a Bronica, but it's all too fast for one of these cameras. I bought some orthochromatic film as I feel it would be period appropriate.
