The movie Ripley inspired me to continue to photograph in black and white-The documentary of Weegee got me started down this road. The Ripley series is so stunning-I was gobsmacked! I seldom photographed in bnw, but have decided to do it more often. I enjoy watching your video and venturing into doing black and white street photography where you live.❤ I would recommend watching the documentary of Weegee the crime photographer who photographed New York City street scenes of murder and fires and such, super interesting.

Recommended films, I’d say classic noir and in particular Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil has wonderful contrasty black and white cinematography. Another stunning black and white film is La Dolce Vita by Federico Fellini. The tones are wonderful to look at. Also there’s a wide shot in the film The Artist of the staircase in the well filmed Bradbury building in LA. That shot deserves to be mounted on a wall.

It always strikes me how many people say that black and white is perfect for overcast days. Personally, I rather much prefer shooting b/w with harsh sunlight to have more contrast. On overcast days you can play with colour contrast which is way nicer than the muddy grey soup of b/w images. And looking at your images, they work just because it is not really overcast - there is a lot of light in these streets!

“The perfect is the enemy of the good.” 03:57 is a banger. If not a banger, a banger-. Yes, the center could have used somebody in it. You couldn’t have controlled. The image is about the hands. You captured the man stretching. That is what caught your eye. You could have waited for someone to enter the center of your frame. Then you loose the gesture and the man on the right side of the frame with his hand extended. For my taste, you taking a step back or two would have helped with the juxtaposition but then you loose the gesture and the man on the right again. This was never going to be a perfect image. You couldn’t change the elements within the frame. You caught the best that was there in that very brief moment. Kudos. You might be a color snob. Your words. I’d suggest you have a color preference. Remember, in the 50’s & 60’s only B&W images were accepted for ‘serious’ images. Of course Ernst Haas & Saul Leiter proved the conventional norms wrong. I like Acros with the red filter. I love to crush my blacks. I also underexpose by ~1/2 stoop. That is the look I like. Your mileage may vary. A suggestion. Set your camera up so you are taking B&W jpegs and also shoot raw. Your EVF will show you B&W plus you also get color negatives. As much as I like Acros, I love Panasonic’s B&W L monochrome D which is in the G/GX9 plus full frame bodies. Very contrasty. In my opinion, the best B&W jpeg out there. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

I actually flinched when the screen turned from B&W to bright orange. Most of the film Noir from the 1940s and fifties is well worth watching , not just for cinematography in mono but all the other parts that make a film great . Btw I do like your usually muted colours in the same way I prefer Westerns shot in colour. There's a time and a place for things, as my mom used to say. Also La Dolce Vita I have always read was shot on Farrania P30 , I've never seen that contradicted . Best wishes I really like your work, Jake E.

Curious about using the acros simulation as I’ve used it extensively, are you adjusting contrast in post? Or are you using custom settings in camera? Just wondering because I rarely get the contrast you are achieving here without adjusting in post. Great work by the way. As a suggestion for films, while not actually b&w, the colors are muted enough that I often see it in b&w through my eyes and that is Northfork by the Polish Brothers. It is simply a master craft of visual storytelling and beauty. Every shot is a masterpiece. I highly recommend it for any photographic inspiration.

I love to shoot in black and white. It is certainly a very different discipline to colour photography. I always like to find subjects with good contrast. Agree that b&w works well on overcast days when you can play with the settings in your favourite software to add contrast - plus make use of a shallower dof for added contrast too. Personally, I don’t really shoot with a b&w preset and prefer just to see in colour. I’ve got used to being able to predict what could work as b&w. When I’ve used a b&w preset, I always find it a bit too distracting and harder to see the image on brighter sunny days - besides, film photographers don’t have that luxury and seem to do OK. Just the odd way I work and if seeing b&w in the viewfinder (or back screen) works for you, by all means stick to it.

@@frame-lines That's what I do. I've been shooting b&w for a number of years now so have a good eye and foresight for what would work as b&w. As I say, it's just easier for me to see the viewfinder or back screen in colour for the composition in camera and convert to b&w in the edit. Also I find it really helps to intentionally take photos with b&w in mind rather than making that decision during the edit as an afterthought. Your b&w photos will look so much better this way.

Being old school, I have to suggest The Third Man by Orson Welles. The movie itself is considered one of the best of all time (along with his other more famous movie Citizen Kane). But the photography is absolutely bad a@@. I didn't want to do much BW until I saw this movie. Much like you and Belfast. Now, with digital, I do Raw plus Monochrome Jpegs. Glad to see you come over and trying the "dark" side.

Great video. Imo there is a place for bw and for color. I love bw a lot but sometimes you need some color for the extra umph. But when I see e.g. a series of model photos and suddenly there is a bw one it make my heart beat quicker. But in the end: There is no right or wrong. Thanks for sharing

I like colour, and please don't get me wrong but for me colour is like all that hot spice in cooking to cover the lack of taste in the main ingredients. Black & White is raw and naked. Contrary ot popular belief, It is actually much more difficult doing good B&W photography. Your photograpohs were good.

Ah. We're not sure. We see the scenes but are always looking for your signature colour. Experimenting is good; it's even necessary, but....

Interestingly for me, it seemed garish when you switched to colour.

Honestly, I tend to identify you more with colour work. Black and white doesn't seem to do your sense of wittiness and Britishness enough justice. Or perhaps you just haven't yet found your voice in black and white, (since there are photographers like Richard Kalvar, who has a similar, distinct witty style but in B&W)
