A couple of finance experts are forecasting possible interest rate rises this year.
This comes as the ABS this week published worse-than-expected inflation figures as the price of rentals and insurance increase.
Financial Planner and Author Patricia Howard joined Sky News Australia to discuss the possibility of interest rate rises.
“I think there’ll be a lot of people holding their breaths waiting for the reserve bank to announce their decision in May,” Ms Howard said.
“I think all signs are showing that there’s a possibility that the reserve bank will lift interest rates … in order to get the rate of inflation under control.”

To be fair to them, no one (banks or not) can predict the interest rate movement precisely - at best, it's just an educated guess. The problem is the banks don't realise this and arrogantly make all these interest rate calls as if they have a foresight. Similarly, many people make the mistake of listening to these banks as if their 'forecast' actually is worth more than it actually is.

The Australian dollar is diving because our interest rate is lower than other developed countries. So either we get the interest rate in line with the rest of the world or the dollar keeps sliding and we pay more for imports, increasing inflation.

@JoeyBlogs007
@JoeyBlogs007 12 күн бұрын
The problem is that raising interest rates doesn't control inflation in all situations, because in the current environment interest rate driven costs get passed on to consumers, due to the high level of debt owned by businesses and home owners. Their economic model is flawed and they need to take a serious look at their economic modelling. There's a shortage of housing and massively excessive migration, so who do you think pays for this at the end of each year ??? renters. Excessive demand and hence spending again due to record migration, rather than per unit household expenditure increases. Immigration needs to be curtailed immediately by 75% and the problem will be resolved with a month or two.

Isn’t high interest rate one of the reasons for inflation? At least in the case. Especially when all the increases are from stable products. I mean we live very frugally, no mortgage and can still feel the pinch.

@@dexio8601 in a normal condition when supply demand is under control right. But we have crises with all the necessities, basic goods right now, how much less can you eat because of inflation, and travel, fuel, housing. It’s not like we’re trying to slow down the expansion, we literally have no place to live and wages cannot keep up with costs. High interest rate is adding fuel to the fire.
