As someone who is handy and can do all his own work, this still looks like a great deal to me. What makes it a deal is not the price of the house but the amount of "sweat equity" you can put into it. If you are like most modern Westerners, you are a congenital consumer who is used to just paying other people to do things for you - in that case it probably will cost you more than it is worth, and is a terrible deal for you. But if you are a "do-it-yourselfer," there is nothing you can't handle. People need to remember that building and renovating isn't magic, it is method + hard work, and these $1 houses were most built by illiterate, simple peasants who simply made an effort and learned along the way. The real issue is whether you can make a living in Sicily and survive. Fixing up a house, or even building one from scratch, is the easy part.

As an expats in Berlin I bring a lot of cash to economy too. But what I get is Steuerklass 1 and top of the market renting prices. And old contract renters hate us and blame for raising prices and government just thinking how to get more from us. So yeah it’s time to switch to incentives too.

During the pandemia I made an exhaustive study in different cities but the math didnt close. Really pain. Better to buy for 20% more a unit in better conditions in the South towns.

GREAT IDEA ... spend boatloads of $$$ to the locals to renovate your new $1 wreck, but you're still in THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE !

@@PerFinEx ONLY a fool would do that, an island with earthquakes that could make your place a new RUIN in a few hours ? Not to mention the isolated location

Of course it's worth it ... think about it ... only 16 homes to be had ... and how many people wanted it? The people who actually got one and will more than likely be up to the task ... such a good idea ... if you want something for nothing ... well good luck with that one. Brilliant idea.
