Use the tide to your advantage! I constantly receive requests for more videos covering the basics of actually finding fish in various systems. Well, ask and you shall receive! In this one, I cover some very important keys to locating fish in our southern estuaries, while also making the most of tidal flow and the presence of bait... I'm fairly sure you'll get something out of this one!

Great video and excellent fish. I used to occasionally fish the run in tide drifting close to the banks along 5 ways using nippers pumped out on the way to fish. Not sure what it's like these days, but it used be good. Over in the Yorke Peninsula, whiting, salmon, garfish, flathead and crabs have kicked in. The freezer doesn't have much space left. I use your lads resin heads with squidgies drifting them with the current. A very successful method! Snapper are still banned - to get numbers up, but as a good sign, we catch and release quite a few each outing.

Top tip’s as always! and on the flatty how close was that! 5mm of leader! I’d like to add for those that don’t know who Steve is or hadn’t seen this channel to listen to these tips! and watch these videos in their entirety! There’s some real advice in these videos! Even his literature on paper is great! I’d gone from using bread on a hand line catching small mullet and bream as a kid in the 90’s to land based game fishing in 6 months after discovering quality literature from the likes of Steve and his books/magazine articles like modern fishing magazine! Even to this day a good magazine like fish-life I keep on my desk that doesn’t need wifi or charging! There was other inspiration but having a direct feed into the possibility’s and using that insight to improve and expand my own experience turned me from someone that likes fishing to a dedicated lifetime angler! I’m a mechanic and have a whole other life that just gets in the way of fishing!

Love the videos, Starlo. I have an idea for content - fish a local at the request of a community member. We don't always have the opportunity to travel for fishing. I would be curious what you could get out the Maroochy river because all I get are the smallest whiting's.

Something is eating those tiny Whiting. I fished a lake once that I knew held fish but I caught nothing trip after trip. Until I worked out how to fish there. p.s. It's full of fish. I also know a brackish creek that you can catch Herring and Mullet. If you use a live prawn at night there are huge Bream and electric eels. 😂 I'm currently sussing out a calm bay that usually has rubbish fish but I'm working out that there are fish there at times. When there's not massive amounts of kelp there. 😂

Enjoyed that one Starlo nice whiting. I watched a beach fishing video the other day he was trying to catch bait without too much success he did catch a small whiting but threw it back I nearly cried as it was a perfect live bait. I made a comment to use a sabiki in the surf for live bait. I never got a reply but I did from one of his subscribers who had never heard of using a sabiki in the surf only in a boat. I said give it a try you will be surprised. I often catch bait this way when I can’t use my cast net. I was wondering if you could make a video please on using a sabiki in the surf for bait as there seems to be a lot of people who don’t know this. I have even caught a few nice bream whiting and golden trevallly using this method for live bait off the beach 😊

I have to say I think you have the perfect boat mate it is exactly how I would set up a boat for my personally needs. I’ve been looking at these boats not ages doing my research and I really think this is the perfect set up. Tje only addition which may be a hindrance is a centre console awning or a rear one just for some cover for the longer days

Catching up on all my missed videos. Looking forward to trying out the ideas and techniques back in the Camden Haven Inlet. Just wondering Starlo if you would share some of the technical aspects of the 'tools of the trade' when targeting different species and habitats. For instance in this presentation you used a 'heavy' outfit to throw the larger lure and changed for working higher up in the estuary with lighter lures. Things like; Rod size (length, rated capacity ie 4-8kg), Reel and line size, Leader and knots to use? I mention knots because I always tie a loop knot on all my lures but it looked like you had tied the Ligen right down on the eye of the lure? Just my thoughts... Thank you again for sharing your invaluable knowledge.

Thanks for that great feedback. I'm starting to incorporate more info on tackle used - either in the video or in the description and comments. I almost always use a loop when lure fishing, too. On light gear it's usually a Uni Knot tied to leave a small loop, but this often tightens and snugs down when a fish is hooked, which may be why it looked like a tight connection?

Trying to work out why the Flathead are biting surface when they are a bottom eating fish?
@jaar8320
@jaar8320 10 ай бұрын
Excellent video again Starlo, I've got a (very sizeable) question about eating fish out of those small creeks. I recently had a great session chasing small, mostly undersize flathead on very light 6lb gear in a creek that I can walk straight across most sections on low tide, on the sandbars its crossable on high tides. Its only about 10-15 metres wide in most parts, and has some extremely discoloured water upstream. I release most of my fish yet on this day decided to keep a 43cm flathead from the most upstream section that I reached (as I was about to leave), from very discoloured water, yet found its flesh to be cleaner and tastier than that of a similar sized flathead I had caught a few days before from a large river system a few kilometres away, probably a similar distance upstream proportional to the size of the system, if that makes sense. I was therefore wondering what your thoughts were on what makes a good environment for clean, tasty fish. The smaller system is very hard to put a boat in, yet I'm not sure the effect to which boat traffic has on the condition of a fish. There is a highway next to the larger system and lots of agricultural runoff makes its way down to where I was fishing. There is a trailer park/camp ground at the entrance of the smaller creek yet again I do not think that it has much of an effect on the quality of the water in the creek. The main factor in my opinion is the high amount of current flow I observe in the smaller system, which would move the more stagnant water around and also allow fish to move between cleaner and lower quality water environments. This current flow may also stir up more sediments and discolour the water, leading to the misinterpretation of the water being "dirty" or polluted. The other flathead was caught from a mud bank that receives very little water movement, leading to me siding with this theory. Then again, the larger system's flathead may it have just been a poorly conditioned fish, a fish that had moved downstream from very low quality water upstream near the farmland, or maybe even a poorly conditioned memory when comparing the two fish even. I'd love your thoughts on the "best eating environments" nonetheless. Great video again, cheers
@StarloGetsReel
@StarloGetsReel 10 ай бұрын
Certainly an interesting topic. I tend not to keep too many fish from way up the top, especially the darker ones, but both the flathead and that whiting from this session were very tasty and not "tainted" in any way. Sure, I've probably eaten better whiting and flathead, but I've eaten worse, too! Something worth bearing in mind is just how mobile these fish are. They could well have been "down the front" a day or two (or even a tide or two) earlier. They move around a lot, and can adjust their colouration to suit their surroundings quite rapidly. More "sedentary" fish like southern black bream are a little different, but even they move around quite a bit.
