How can we find some daily calm in the rush of life? Feeling stressed? Rushed? Try this simple exercise and practise it regularly to slow down a little and enjoy life more.
This video gives a guide through this simple but timeless exercise that has been in use in the School for decades. It's like a short meditation or mindful practice, focusing on awareness. It touches on each of the senses, allowing us to connect with the present moment, and rest for a short while - it's a great tool for daily life.
The Awareness Exercise is introduced in the first class of the School's philosophy course as a direct way of finding more stillness, depth and enjoyment in life. This also adds an experiential dimension to the study of philosophy. The Awareness Exercise is offered as a daily practice. Students in classes share their experience together, and encourage each other's practice.

The School of Philosophy and Economic Science offers courses in practical philosophy and economics with justice as well as other subjects. It aims to approach philosophy in a practical way, encouraging students to apply philosophy in their lives. The School also introduces this mindfulness-type exercise leading eventually to mantra meditation.

I attended the school for a period a few years back and this was my big takeaway. I still practise the exercise several times a week and it is amazing how effective even just a few minutes a day is on concentration, focus and being calm.

Practicing this Exercise has made a huge difference in my daily life. It's a wonderful "reset" button when one feels off track. It also helps one gather thoughts and energy before undertaking a task. Perhaps the biggest aspect that I have found useful is it reminds me that we are all one, allowing me to connect more deeply with others.

Ex student here,now living in Mexico....thank you for the exercise..almost brings the school right into my home! Is there by any chance a half hour meditation here on KZfaq? Have looked but don't see anything..thanks so much..
