**Just make sure the CATs aren't coming apart as you could potentially cause a loose part of a failing catalytic converter honeycomb to fly into the engine through an open exhaust valve causing catastrophic engine failure**

Now that is pure genius! Excellent use of everyday tools to diagnose and resolve a common problem in an affordable way. 👍
@thehappytexan
@thehappytexan Жыл бұрын
Have done this several times. If you have catalyst efficiency codes, exhaust leaks up stream of the o2 sensors are very common. The shop vac method gives you time to check the whole system, and you don’t have to mess with adapters and a regulator for shop air.
@GripFreak
@GripFreak Жыл бұрын
Do you have a video of when you used this method?
@thehappytexan
@thehappytexan Жыл бұрын
@@GripFreak I do not. It’s very simple to do though. Connect the hose to the outlet side of your shop vac, put it over the tailpipe and wrap tape around pipe/hose end connection to seal it as best as you can. Get a spray bottle, put about a 1/4” of dawn in it then fill it with water. A nice soapy solution like that is perfect for spraying down any suspected areas. It will bubble up nicely, even from a small leak.

Yes I'm getting GENERIC O2 sensor codes (p0032 HO2S Bank1sensor1) but I think it's the vacuum leak causing this. Good catch‼️

I thought I was the only one who did this! I remember trying to figure a way to find exhaust leaks without a smoke machine and then it finally clicked. while it’s highly unlikely to damage the engine, I always run the vacuum and shake the hose for a minute, before hooking it up, to work out the fine dust from the hose.
@TechnicianRed
@TechnicianRed Жыл бұрын
Yeah I tried using a smoke machine too but they don't put out near enough volume so all the smoke leaks through the engine and water drain holes in the muffler and never builds any pressure in the exhaust to find the real leaks.
@peterweth
@peterweth Жыл бұрын
@@TechnicianRed agreed. When I was still a diy mechanic, I first tried starting the engine cold and sliding under the car as fast as I could to spray soapy water. Looking back it was quite comical and I never was fast enough to get to the headers. Great video. The simplicity of this test coupled with the availability of needed tools will help a lot of people.
