This is a perfect exmaple of how we know the earth is NOT flat as some people argue today. A celestial south pole is totally impossible on a flat earth model.

Hey man I just wanna say thank you, this kinda information is so hard to find. there are a few videos on ursa major but to my knowledge there are zero on cassiopeia, summer triangle, orion etc… they are valuable survival skills that are often overlooked plus its a very satisfying feeling being able to look up at the sky and say hey! theres cassiopeia! and canis major! and orion!. Before I had no idea about any constellations, now whenever I go camping I always assign a portion of the night to just gaze… the vocal minority that say they dont care about stars are just armchair survivalists that never go outside. how can you not find these videos valuable? navigation tools AND a crash course in constellations… sweet job alfie. Out of curiousity… can you find directions with the moon? that’s one big sky object ive yet to see any content on it seems to have slipped the radar. Thanks and “Peace” ;)

Looking at the stars is a highlight of camping... after you outgrow playing with the fire and scaring each other (and yourself) with the night bush noises. I always still look for the Southern Cross, the Seven Sisters and the Saucepan :) . Alfie on your facebook page there is a pic of you almost rock climbing, do you do any rock climbing camping ?

So many people in the northern hemisphere think the Southern Cross marks the south pole,when it is actually 27+ degrees away to its most southerly star. I live at 27 degrees north, and with a clear southern horizon, during the period that the Crux in in our nighttime sky. We can see the 3 northerly stars, but while technically above the horizon for about 90 minuter, the south star on on the horizon and very hard to see.

I like the alternative of adding the same distance 4 times outwards to find south... it's actually similar to adding the same distance 4 times to the outer two stars of ursa major to find north. I never realised it's actually the same trick!

I don't knew the first method, I always used the second one, 4x the crux lenght=south. Interesting thing is, the southern cross appears rotated downwards in Australia/New Zealand night sky, comparing with the Brazillian perspective ( usually kind of 45° oriented).

Hello, Alfie Aesthetics. I like all the videos made by you that I have watched so far (I have watched more than fifteen of them) I like specially the series of videos you have dedicated to celestial navigation. Your videos are very well organized, etc. From my point of view, you have shown that you are a professional youtuber. "A crack", in other words. Since you have written that your subscribers can make suggestions about ideas for more videos, my suggestion is the following: + “The Milky Way” as a device for celestial navigation and a means of locating useful constellations. I mean that “The Milky Way” [also known as “The Spilled Breastmilk”] has been used in order to find important constellations (from the Northern Celestial Pole to the Southern Celestial Pole). Imagine that you are lost in the wilderness at night and you can see the night sky showing all its magnificence (even the weakest star lights appear above you). It would be useful to know how to use “The Milky Way” in order to find important constellations [Those constellations can then be used in order to find the direction towards the North and South] For example, > In the Northern Hemisphere * “Cassiopeia” has “The Milky Way” as a background. *Part of the "Summer Triangle" has “The Milky Way” as a background. * As far as I am concerned, pilgrims throughout Europe used “The Milky Way” as a Celestial Navigation device in order to find (follow) the way to Santiago de Compostela (that is situated in the North-western corner of the Iberian Paeninsula). They made such a journey on foot (with a lot of patience…, of course) > On the Equator: * Part of the "Winter Triangle" has “The Milky Way” as a background. > In the Southern Hemisphere * The same happens with “Sagitarius” (The Archer) * “The Scorpion” has “The Milky Way” as a background. * “The Great Ship Argo” almost seems to follow “The Milky Way” as if it were a white river, so to speak. * Last, but not least, “The Southern Cross” and the pointers (which form part of the constellation of “The Centaur”) have “The Milky Way” as a background. [Once upon a time in which the constellation of “The Southern Cross” was considered a leg of the Constellation of “The Centaur”] I hope that this suggestion (A video about “The Milky Way” as a device of Celestial Navigation and as a means of locating useful constellations) [ and the ideas related to it] help you make a good video. That is to say, another good video as the ones you usually make. One of the Sky maps I have consulted has the following reference (or name) in the internet: The Ancient Greek Sky tumblr_mcbaof6Dyw1qbh26io1_1280.png I think that you will agree with me that “The Spilled Breastmilk” is a good topic (and title) for a video in youtube. Ja, ja, ja! :D In my opinion, you have the ability, experience and other qualities that are necessary to make a video of that kind. You have shown that you are able to combine serious data (knowledge) and entertainment in order to make a useful and interesting video. What do you think about that? Changing now the first topic of this message, I would like to ””talk”” about the following idea related to Celestial Navigation [I read the following piece of information in a book that is a sky atlas]: It is possible to use two stars < a and ß > of the Square of the constellation of Pegasus (The Winged Horse) in order to find the star Polaris [ In fact, that line is a continuation of the very same line that is used with “The Great Dipper” (“Ursa Maior) in order to find the star Polaris]. That same line can be prolonged towards the south in order to find the star named “Fomalhaut” in the Southern Hemisphere. Thank you very much for making and uploading so many good videos. I would like you to answer to this message and tell me your opinion about the suggestions that have been written here. I am looking forward to reading (hearing, etc.) your response. You can take your time, of course. Thank you for reading this message (or comment). It is so long that one has to read it step by step. Peace and best wishes.

Comparatively interesting presentation. Could've done without the condescension. Is it a constellation or an asterism? Please explain.
@vtec5862
@vtec5862 6 жыл бұрын
It is a constellation ( Crux ) but many people don't call it by its constellation name but by the names "Southern Cross" or "The Cross". The asterism consists of all the 4 stars which are Acrux, Becrux, Gacrux and Delta Crucis which also make up the constellation and an asterism is a notable part or pattern or in a constellation or multiple constellations. So the Crux is technically a constellation.
