The suburban quarter acre block might be sufficient for 2 ppl to live off, coupled with a semi-austere diet, but in reality - and from experience - a family of 4 -6 needs ideally a 3/4 acre, half of which would be the garden and the rest houses, sheds and free area for cars/machinery and animals (chickens geese ducks turkey etc) to roam plus a leisure area. Thats roughly how villages were traditionally set up. At least in central/greater Europe. Awesome content Curtis! Love you man.

I have my escape plan out of suburbia. While that plan completes, I have raised beds that offset the grocery bill. Radishes, turnips, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, and onion sets thus far.

@Richard Dick the gentleman i posed the question to talks about a small scale raised bed system, so the question mainly referred to his cost offset after his input and maintenance costs. i know long term it will pay off, but for the urban agriculturist, i'm curious to know the true cost after expenses and even when you scale, what does that balance really look like?

Unless we grow high sugar, high starch foods in our gardens, we are preparing to diet. A green food garden is mostly a zero net caloric endeavor, especially when we factor the effort to plant, cultivate and harvest those plants. If they need cooked, we're looking at a neg net. We cant just say that we need a certain number of acres of garden, everything depends on the caloric net. My grandparents spent their childhoods as neighbors in southern Ohio during the depression. Aside from a bit of wheat and sugar, both families lived entirely from their gardens and animals that they fed out from those gardens. Before they died I picked their brains. They both said that they had better than eight acres in garden per household yearly. Both families had seven members. I told them what preppers on you tube thought was the necessary size garden to feed their families. They both giggled. While a portion of those gardens were dedicated to animal food as well, more than an acre per individual was used to grow people food. This is largely because they used only composted material for fertilizer. Commercial fertilizers are all that make huge modern yields possible. This largely depends on how many animals are being fed to supply those fertilizers and the possibility of collecting their feces. We wont get everything back that we put into them. To put this in better perspective, consider the number of canning jars they had, which is just as important as the crop chosen or animal being fed. Each of them inherited about four thousand jars. Who knows how many were discarded before they passed to me. A quart jar filled with garden food contains on average 450 calories. To sustain an adult diet youd need better than five jars per day. To supply an adult with food from harvest to harvest requires somewhere between 1000 to 1200 jars. Folks that is a bunch of garden food. It represents a bunch of calories burned in production. Collecting firewood to pressure can those foods requires much more caloric burn. Post SHTF gardening is nothing to be taken lightly. Prepare accordingly y'all, because gardening isn't gonna be like it is now, after SHTF.

You know they use these warming words "Women's reproductive rights " or "Planned Parenthood" Abortion is the end game but the public would then understand their deception.Our tax money funding bombardier another fine example then seeing their executives were then given bonuses after a bail out .The deception our tax money is being used to help CANADIANS for the most part is a joke..the politicians & friends are laughing all the way to the bank at our expense.I hope this clears up everything it's just a drop in the bucket!

I began gardening 4 yrs ago. I would give all those considering starting, you need to find some faith in a higher being. Weather has much to do with how productive your going to be in any one yr. I grew up knowing lots of farmers. Every one of them had bad yrs, & you have to be willing to accept the bad times, & have hope next yr's gonna be wonderful. (God forbid 2 bad yrs in a row) Learning to live frugally (if that's all you're going to exist on) & putting back whatever you can will help you get thru the hard times. If you've never gardened before, don't "expect" anything that first yr...it's going to be a learning yr mostly. That way, you won't be so disappointed & throw in the towel if you don't get much...& you'll be in heaven when you do get something...& you WILL get something! (If you have experienced help, you'll have a better time & yield)

Thank you, Curtis! So would you you agree that if you add the fruit trees growing on the 1/4 acres home plot would be about 1/8 or half of that plot which is 5,445 sq. ft. Add that to the 1/2 acre vegetable garden (2,1780 sq. ft.) totaling 27,225 sq.ft. to feed a family of 4 ?

I remember talking to somebody, many decades ago. He tried to get a "Home stead"; like, 180 acres, for free.... But ran into red tape, and considerable beureaucratic friction...he didn't get the land.... It seems that, 30 odd years ago, it was there!!! some people get a mining claim, then build on the claim??? Quite common to chase people off a claim..."It's none of your business what I'm mining here"!! Dangerous!

We have an acre and a third with a LOT of threes. Not a lot of sun. I love the trees, but. I want to add fruit trees and be able to grow the majority of our fruit and vegetables. We will also have chickens for eggs and will buy whatever meat and dairy we need. I just have no idea if we can actually do it. Kind of freaks me out thinking about it.

I find early new potatoes can be quite a profitable crop, especially if you are the first one to market with them. Winter storage potatoes, not so much.

Thanks for all the info, been following along on and off over the years. Recently moved from Kelowna to Mexico and looking to get some land here to grow on. Do you know of anyone that provides info like yours for that type of climate? I would imagine it would be important to get more climate relevant info, I won't have to deal with cold weather but will likely have other things to consider that I am just not even aware of at the moment. I live in Orange County outside of Los Angeles. Houses cost 1/2 Million, for a tiny patio, no yard. How do we garden with that. I’m in an apartment & have found container gardening doesn’t work. In college I had a giant organic garden, and did great with my growing. Here, forget it!

We just moved onto our land. I have compost and cardboard and chips. The soil is clay so we were planning on tilling the soil and grass, laying the cardboard, and then compost and chips on top. Would you suggest doing rows or a big solid area?

A question about horse manure, I just got some horse manure it is odourless and the pile was smoking, I sprinkled some over my garden beds (I will amend them with some soil in a couple of weeks when I plant tomatoes in them) and some over my potatoes, some have told me it is a bad idea, what do you think?

I guess you've learned by now...All animal manure must be at least 1 yr old before use, or it will "burn" your plants...kill them. Only rabbit manure can be used immediately...& it is an EXCELLENT fertilizer! (I personally prefer it to any other)

Anyone loathe the idea of a cooperative? I want to coop with my neighbors like this: I own this, you own that and we'll exchange or trade what we will, that to me is "cooperating". Possibly also a farmers guild to represent everyone, train young people, etc. Otherwise it's just sharecropping which is perhaps not a good thing due to it's sordid history.

If we have part ownership in a farm product sales and distribution entity, that's a corporation which sounds good to me if it turns a profit. That said, I'm not a fan of predatory capitalism

Have you done any videos about how many plants you need to have in a garden to sustain a farmers market business? I'm considering becoming involved in a farmers market next year and am curious about how many of each plant I need to have in my garden. I live in Phoenix, so we have at least two seasons for most veggies....if you have done a video about this, maybe someone can point it out for me? Mom of 6, so searching through videos is not my strong suit :)

I plant my lettuces in places with more and less sunlight to stagger the harvest. You could dehydrate and ferment them, but it would not be as easy to fit in a meal plan

I feel like a slouch! I've been dealing with my own personal ish that I been missing the #Liveshows I catchem on the playback but its NOT tbe same. I have bought 1 of Joe Salatin books and The Urban Farmer book and I am currently reading the Farmer's Almanac then going down the line of reading. Hopefully, Arizona will thaw out by May/June so we can get started. Where do I write to get advice on how to start on undeveloped land after building homestead and income houses?

Brad lancaster has a couple of great books on water harvesting and great info on youtube. He is out of Tucson, Arizona. The survivalpodcast has a lot of good info as well. Curtis will be starting from scratch in the northland and Im sure its gonna be epic!

CURTIS, I started watching your “self-destruct” video yesterday, but I’ve been busy for 2 days, so I didn’t have time to finish watching it. I was just looking for it, and I can’t find it, but I wanted to see the rest of it, and I was telling other people to watch it! Where can I watch that video?

@@offgridcurtisstone Thanks for replying, and in the near future, after we sell our house & buy some land, then I will want to join your website. After we move, then we’ll finally have time to study & learn and I’m very interested in watching all your videos on growing our own food & living off the grid. That is our plan, once we sell our house & find property, but right now, we’re very busy packing up our house & spending all our extra money on things like painting walls, replacing carpet etc. As I’ve been fixing up the house, I’ve been listening to videos about the tyranny & what to do about it. I’m trying to gather as much info as I can, to share with others, before it’s too late, because we won’t even have a free country to grow our own food in, if everyone doesn’t spread the truth & convince enough people to stand up for freedom. I regularly watch about a dozen different KZfaq channels, or maybe 14 or 15 - I can’t think of all of them right now. Lately, many of them have been starting to ask for monthly fees, in order to watch their videos on their websites. Most of them only charge between $3 to $5 dollars a month for their website access, but when you multiply that by a dozen or more channels, it adds up to a lot of money. I wish a bunch of them would get together and just charge one collective fee, that includes the whole group of them. Later, I really do want to join your site & study all your learning videos, after we buy our new property, hopefully within the next 6 months, but if I joined now, I wouldn’t have time to watch yet, so right now, it would be a waste of money, that my family needs to spend on other things. Do you have a 10-day free trial? I’ve seen some other KZfaqrs offering that. For now, I just wanted to find out if I could get a copy of that video, so that I can finish watching & then send it out to many people. I tried to send the link to some other people who need to “wake up” but then the video was gone, so they never got to see it. It was one of the best “red pill” videos that I’ve seen in a while, and I know it would influence some people that I know, who could then influence others & you know - the domino effect, but for spreading truth. I remember you talking about the importance of standing up for our rights & speaking out for the truth, and you summarized the whole agenda, better than I could have done. If I could get a copy of that one video & send it out to people, I’m sure it would attract some new subscribers to your website, plus it might convert some people to the truth! I ask you to consider leaving that one out in the open, on BitChute or Odysee, because it would spread the truth at a crucial time like now. Our countries need more videos like that one, to be shared far & wide, to wake more people up, before it’s too late & the governments start confiscating all the farm land.

@@offgridcurtisstone I looked at your website & scrolled through the videos, and I couldn’t fin last week’s “self-destruct” video. What it the title on your website? On KZfaq, the title just said it would self-destruct, so I need the title, to see if it’s there, before I spend $20, which is 10 times more than any other KZfaqr with a website - all the others charge $2 to $4, and some only charge $1, so $20 is a very high price for website access. But I might be willing to pay for it, if the video is actually on there, because it had a lot of pertinent info, and I care about spreading the truth, more than I care about money.

I have around 2.5 acres.. i would hope it can sustain my family part of the year in a cold country like this.. if not with grand solar minimum we will become refugees somewhere
