Life on Mars was a BBC TV crime drama series aired in 2006 and 2007, and was a mix of 1970s Sweeney style policing combined with some Dr Who time travel.
It starred John Simm as a policeman in 2006 who wakes up after a car accident to discover that he has time-travelled to 1973, and now works under Philip Glenister's character, Gene Hunt.
Their wheels of choice was a Ford Cortina MK3, registration number KJM212K. But all is not as it appears with this car, so join us as we find out more.

No matter how famous a car seems to be .. I have the feeling that this car is simply being bought for the sole purpose of selling it on for a massive profit ... or it is a complete dog ..either way seems rather sad that it cannot be bought and used by an owner that actually cares enough about it to keep her

The later boot lid on older Allegros was a common sight. Following rear end shunts, it was common practice for the damaged boot lid on an early Allegro's to be replaced with a new later type, due to early bootlids becoming quickly unavailable.

A few have mentioned that. Some will have been sold on if the owner has passed away (the Quattro was auctioned after the owners death). You would hope most were in the hands of those it was done for, but will start having a browse.

Yep. Really enjoyed that show and the original basis of it but I have to admit of late it’s not been so enjoyable and almost a bit ‘uncomfortable’ to watch, restoring cars that the owner is either way too ill to use or even worse so close to death they never actually see it finished. You just know the next of kin are not bothered and will flog it as soon as the cameras are gone. A bit like Wheeler Dealers, the productions on that went more American over time (literally) and so much work went on it was more of a ‘ta dah’ at the end than the simple show when Ed started twirling spanners.

Another good video. I loved Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes, some great actors and some great lines delivered by Phil Glennister. Unfortunately, it looks like the car went to people more interested in the money than the car, but at least it has survived which is all that really matters.

Thank you, very interesting. I am already looking forward to the Ashes-to-Ashes quattro. That appears to be dodgy too. On Ashes-to-Ashes it has a 1980 V-suffix plate, but the quattro only came later 1980, so it shouldn't be anything earlier than a W-plate. But what is worse, the TV car has the Type-85 facelift which came in late 1984 and corresponds to a B-prefix the earliest!

My father had a Daytona Yellow 1.6 GXL back in the 70's. After that he had a Purple Velvet Metallic, 2000E. Both were lovely and great looking cars. The boot lid trim with a dark line through it, on the Life on Mars car, was a perfect give-away too. Having said that, it became a great tv star with all it's irregularities.

E last time I saw it I was parked next at the MK3 o'clock at the AGM in the mid teens.s said it was an early facelift 2000E. The quad light conversion is very popular. Otherwise it's std 2000E spec the front indicators would have had orange inserts The GXL like the E came with a vynil roof as std.

Another excellent video with tons of homework put in to find out the back story. Always amuses me when production companies make a mess of altering age details on a car (badly) . Most of them are probably too young to know the vehicles in any depth.

...not only an N-reg plate on the back but a post-facelift 2000E badge (which would have tied in with the N-reg) and the post facelift flash on the bootlid. Interesting that the front sports the GXL lights, grille and badge (post-facelift the main headlights were rectangular with round driving lights...)

Not quite correct, the early E didn't have head restraints, the later ones did. The door cappings were plastic with a real wood veneer on them, the glovebox and dashboard were the same, that continued through the MK4 range but was a plastic fake in the Cortina 80 (MK5)
