.
. We all know that a wind sock can tell us the direction of the wind. But did you know that by looking at the wind sock, you can also estimate the velocity and speed of the wind?
A regulation windsock is broken down into different stages that allow it to extend under certain wind velocities. Speeds of 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15+ can be determined just by looking.
So next time you're at the airport, and about to go flying in your airplane, check the windsock direction AND speed, before you ever have to listen to the weather.

Hi Angle of Attack. Love your videos mate! On my way home from work I see windsocks positioned onsite at some industrial plants. It's been very windy lately, so the windsocks have been fully deployed at the full horizontal. Would these be the same type of windsocks used at airports? Much love from Australia. 🇦🇺😊

@@airmackeeee6792 I can't say for certain that all nations have the same standard. But it's a possibility!

Great refresher. I knew from my ground school that full was 15 kts, but had forgotten the increments.

Great review... another method for back country where you don’t have a windsock assuming you have nearby lakes. -If waves are visible but not white caping / cresting 4 to 6 knots -waves are visible with scattered white caping 7-10 knots -waves are frequently white caping but not solid 11-16 knots -waves constantly white caping 17 knots or greater. And wind direction can be figured out by looking for the end of the lake that is smooth. :-)

I always thought a wind sock full was 25 thanks for the info
@angleofattack

Certainly not! In fact, the sock I filmed in this video, the winds were 12 gusting 15ish. And you can see that's exactly what it's doing.

Angle of Attack funny I have been a crane operator for 20+ years and always used 25mph on full wind sock.. I just googled it up and fully states 15mph. Man was I misinformed. Thank you again.

Correct. Some of them from 'joe blows shop' won't do what it's supposed to. I've also seen some that are really tattered or just full on lying.
