In this video I show you how to find your voice when dealing with your songwriting, performing and musical expression. A sort of 3rd edition spin off of my "Voice Types" video series in which I answer a lot of your questions regarding how to find your vocal type. I won't necessarily teach how to sing better, or anything to find your vocal range but only specifically about artistic expression when singing your songs.

I've been doing so much homework by listening to artists to see what sound I can go for. I honestly only ever wanted to be a singer (not songwriter or producer), but I realized that if I want to be self-sufficient I have to learn. Now I'm not only trying to discover my voice, but the kind of music I want to make, I have a long journey ahead, but I'm excited to keep learning and growing

How to find your own vocal style : 1. Find what styles you vibe with most. 2. Find which artists represent your vocal range, energy and passionate. 3. Study and copy them (only for certain period to build foundation). 4. Add your own flare & flavour and build your own sound. 5. Practice and experiment.

my biggest problem is that I can literally mimic every artist but when it comes to singing in my own tone i can’t help it but to sing the song in the artists style

I used to do this, I even used to harmonize with the artist. What I did overtime was finding that one song you know by heart, once you find that song, sing it like it’s your song. When you do that, sing it in a way like nobody in the room get creative, sing a note you didn’t hear the artist sing but make it still sound good ofc. To the point when you listen to it again you’re only can hear your cover of the song.

@@truvy_5544 ty for the tip. 🙏🥺 had a music teacher in high school that would just shame me and criticize me for trying to stick to my voice or “find it” and never had the confidence even whisper singing cause he had an issue with that too..told me I sounded gross with the nasal sound and said I sounded annoying cause he said I sounded like Britney Spears and abba..he openly admitted to saying all year how much he hated them..so most of my friends in chorus class told me they liked how I sounded and he’s trippin or hatin or whatever and I’m like but he’s the music teacher.. so I just cemented my insecurities about my abilities to sing and tell my story and help people feel like someone else understands that..music was always my friend when I needed someone and no one was there so my own reassurance was in my music..but I have been bedridden recently and couldn’t use my hands or walk..now I’m walking again..I’m tryin to get into my music again...now I’m just determined to never give up on myself because of people in the position to make me doubt myself.

I am a female alto, so there aren't even that many contemporary singers I can look up to! 😂 But I've digging around some old-school soul music and discovered Etta James, she was amazing 😮

Omg yeah I love Etta, but if you want more genres, I recommend Debbie Harry from Blondie for a rock style, especially 'One Way Or Another' or 'Picture This'. She's got a range but definitely preferred the lower, like myself

@@IAMLXGEND hey. I saw the "being lazy" video. And, while that's not entirely true. I really feel like, and I know you don't me. But i feel like, the loop is easy. The percussion is easy. The mix is easy, dedicated 3 years of a template. But that's just it, the loop is easy. And the progression is hard. I took piano lessons young for 4 years, but YOUNG and idk if i am applying it now. Um i guess, have you ever tried melodics before? Or is there something else I can do, to. Get better with arpeggios and chords to build up a song? It is, exhausting. I make good melodies people tell me, but. I don't want just loops anymore. I want it more complicated and smart

I've got a deep voice that I really like, specially my low range, it's something I'm really comfortable to use and that I think sounds really cool, but like you in the start, I try to copy Hozier, or Avi Kaplan, too much that sometimes I hurt myself. Even though their voices are deep like mine it still feels different because I'm me, and it feels unnatural. I never really stopped and payed attention to that, I'm gonna try and explore myself more than using my inspirations styles.
