Find Your Why - Mind Shift Podcast #005
In the fifth episode of "Mind Shift" titled "Find Your Why," Erwin and Aaron McManus dive into the crucial role of 'why' in giving direction to our lives.
We explore the dangers of society's expectation for us to live grandiose lives filled with lofty dreams and goals, often leading to overreaching and over-projection. Contrarily, we discuss how community cultures can lead to a better understanding of ourselves.
In this episode, we critically assess the impact of traditions and their potential to divert our focus away from building the future we want. We emphasize the importance of understanding the driving forces behind our actions-our 'whys.' We discuss how I found my own 'why' and its transformational effect on my life.
Sharing from personal experience, Erwin recount's how he established his life's mission statement three decades ago, seeking to be a voice of hope in a world seemingly drowning in hopelessness.
Furthermore, we provide guidance on finding one's 'why' and the power it holds in giving our lives a gravitational core. We underscore that the 'why' can be found in what makes us feel most alive, what we cannot stop doing regardless of remuneration.
Finally, we discuss the importance of elevating people's thinking, dispelling cliches and superstitions, and shedding light on dark thoughts.
Tune in as we navigate the future together.

Im listening to both in this conversation and this thought came to me from processing what I’m listening. Jesus is the answer, But he doesn’t have to be the answer we want to every question we have. I too am still searching for my “why,” but maybe it does not have to be processed logically in my mind to get that answer.

Can’t say enough about not only listening to what you share with each other, but actually putting what you share into my everyday thoughts or life. Incorporating the passion and perspective on topics that resonate with me. Thank you for being you. You both are an inspiration🙏

I know I mention my wife a lot, but she has been doing a ton of this already! Reader after reader keeps telling her that her books have pulled them out of dirty book rabbit holes they didn't realize they were in. She has hundreds of people drinking water every day instead of 5 Cokes. She has even launched things similar to the arena! And a massive amount of all this is thanks to you guys

ELEVATING YOUR WHY ERWIN 46:12 I’m finding myself in a season where my why is evolving, refining, and changing. And maybe some of it is I’m almost 65. And every season of my life I try to take on new challenges. I try to push myself to do things I’ve never done before and go outside of my comfort zone. I think it’s really important to have a why, because that why, it does drive my life. So I need to identify it. And if that why isn’t good enough, if it isn’t valid for me, I need to step up and find a why that replaces that why. And then realize that : It’s only your why if you’re willing to sacrifice for it. It’s only your why if you’re willing to step into it, regardless of what anyone else says. It’s only your why. If you do not need applause If you do not need celebration If you do not need affirmation If it’s your must. When you have that why, it drives everything and it begins to define your what and how and where and when and with who. If you want elevate your why, then change your who. When you begin to change the people that you’re around, it changes your why. When you elevate the people you’re around, it elevates your why. And one of the things I’ve noticed even as being your dad is, the selection process of the people that you invest in. You invest in people that you can pull up, but you also connect to people that pull you up. And you put yourself in rooms of people who challenge you, with people who think at a high level. And, you can always know when a person is going to elevate their why, because they elevate their inner circle. I actually think that’s what’s exciting is that in the arena, we’re going to get to elevate our who. And when we elevate the people that we’re engaged with, it’s going elevate our why and we’re all going to get better.

ERWIN’S WHY You were asking me earlier, what was my why? And I was walking over here to the microphone, asking myself that question. 30 years ago, I put together a statement of my life. And I just wrote down that I wanted to be a voice of hope. And that became really the driving force of my life. I felt like humanity was drowning in hopelessness, and I just could never shake remembering what it felt like to feel alone and disconnected, insignificant. I wanted to be at least a small part of helping people never have to feel that way again. And so, a huge driving value of my life has been to be a voice of hope. And that, for me was the connecting point between humanity and Jesus. 30:27 I communicate who Jesus is to the world, because I desperately want people to have hope. And I know that that hope is found in him. And that if people will connect to him, that those deep recesses where we move to a despair and depression and loneliness and disconnection and insignificance, can be overtaken by the presence of a God that loves people unconditionally. Out of that statement to be a voice of hope is where I wrote Mosaic’s mission statement over 30 years ago, it happened at U C L A basketball, when Chippy Anderson asked me, Erwin, what is your why? And I said, to be a voice of hope. And then on the drive home, by the time I got to the house, I had put together the mission statement : That in my life, I’m going to live by faith, be known by love, and be a voice of hope. And that became my why. Humanity became my why. And that became my mission statement for my life.

Gentlemen, I really enjoy the "spontaneity" of the podcast and both of your willingness to be real with us, but this one was a bit on the long side of the riffing and there was not much attention given to the "Why" until about 28 minutes into the session. I am really looking forward to the next several weeks when (I hope) an overview/dive into Mind Shift book will take place along with The Arena and other goodies. Looking forward to all the Premium book order package as well. Thanks again to you both!

FINDING YOUR WHY ERWIN 44:22 I think one of the things that’s important is to take some time and actually to process your why. Why do you do what you do? And maybe reverse engineer it instead of trying to figure out what your why’s supposed to be. Figure out what your why actually is by what you’re doing every day, because your why gets revealed by what you do. And then if you don’t like the why you discover, then begin to change your why. And sometimes what you’ll find is : Your Why is when you feel most ALIVE Your Why is when you feel full of PASSION Your Why is when no one has to Pay You. They can’t even stop you because you just have to do it.

LEADERSHIP AND THINKING 6:06 ERWIN What people really need to learn is leadership. They need to learn ‘How To Think’ Mindsets. 💭 They need to learn How To Communicate. 🗣️ They need to learn to how to be in the public arena of thought and elevate their thinking. 🌐 The Arena is going to be one of the few places in the world where people can actually access the highest level of thinking, engagement and mentoring in the areas of leadership, communication and character. It’s going to be an incredible place. This is going to be our life’s work. And it’s going to be extra ordinary. ⚡️⚡️⚡️ AARON: It’s going to be amazing. We’ve spent the better half of well over a year developing this and creating this community around the idea of what it would look like to build a place online where people can come together to sharpen their skills, sharpen their minds, learn something very specific and also things that are very broad. One of your biggest core values is learning how to think.Thinking matters. Understanding how to think matters. And asking big questions matters. ☝️

CULTURAL IDENTITIES & INDIVIDUALISM 9:25 AARON: How important is it for us to have a cultural identity and ideology but then also to have an individual perspective ? Can that be detrimental to the overall society, that we become too individualistic ? Or is important that we have our own identity ? ERWIN: For me, there’s tension because there’s positive and negative from both sides. There’s a positive from the more independent, almost individualistic, autonomous, cultural perspective of the American culture where you get to go pursue your dreams. You get to go big. You’re not limited by whatever your family’s capacity was in the past. But you’re oftentimes alone, disconnected, isolated, with a loss of identity. People don’t realize that the reason we don’t know who we are is that we’re not connected to each other. And our identity comes at a community. And without community you will always be searching for your identity. 15:31 It’s challenging, but you asked a really good question. I think that’s why it’s important to look at culture. And yes, we’re all connected to culture, and you cannot extricate yourself from it. You’re affected by the world around you. You’re affected by the people, the community, the family, the society, and none of us are impervious to the opinions and thoughts of other people. And it affects us when people say things about us, good or bad. And it does shape us. If you get a bad haircut and someone says, oh, I don’t like your hair, it’s amazing how quickly you change the haircut. AARON: Even the small things, we’re all affected. And it’s true with cultural values. I’m really grateful for my Latin background, and I’m really thankful for so much that was infused in me. I’m also grateful for, the things that I’ve absorbed from American culture. I actually love the whole dynamic of the American dream. I love the fact that we live in an environment where we’re encouraged to pursue, big lives, big dreams, and big goals. I don’t think that’s true in other parts of the world. I actually love the heroic narrative of American culture where, you’re expected to live a heroic life. You know you’re challenged to be a pioneer, an adventurer, an explorer and discover. That’s a part of the American culture. And I’m really grateful that I got that.
