Finding Balance (and opening up on a personal level)

Personal message: When it comes to material things, sometimes we realize it’s all too much, and we eventually feel suffocated and overwhelmed and need to purge or downsize. Other times, we’re fully enjoying these material items and yet we inflict guilt and judgment upon ourselves for owning nice things. It’s as if we can’t let ourselves be content either way.
In past videos, I’ve talked about being mindful of shopping habits, about decluttering and letting go, and making smart money choices with saving and investing. I’ve also talked about gratitude and simply enjoying all that we already have versus looking for more, more, more.
But we don’t have to keep swinging from one side of the extreme to the other. Meaning, we don’t need to go full on maximalism and buy everything we see that looks cool, new or trendy. We also don’t need to force ourselves to get rid of items that we’re genuinely using and enjoying.
There is a middle ground, and it’s called BALANCE. That is the focus of this video. I get pretty personal and open up to you guys in a way I haven’t before.
You all have helped me through the years. We don’t just look at pretty eye candy and talk about shopping (although we do that too!), what I value is the way we connect and relate to one another. I believe that most of us are trying to live our best lives - working hard, being responsible and generous towards others, while also figuring out fun ways to treat ourselves.
Thank you all for being here. It’s all silly and frivolous fashion talk, but deep down, it’s more. ❤️
I hope this video will resonate with many of you.
As always, thanks so much for watching~

Thank you so much for sharing this and being so open with us! As a psychologist I think you really hit the point when you reflected the reasons for your wish to downsize. As you said, your reasons aren’t that you a) need money, b) don’t enjoy the items or c) don’t use them. Buying luxury bags if you can’t afford them or make impulse purchases you regret later on, is definitely unwise or immature. But in your case I would even say that it’s a sign of maturity that you are now able to allow yourself to buy and enjoy the things you can comfortably afford and that bring you joy! You progressed so much from your childhood where you learned to never splurge and be frugal with your needs and wants to allowing yourself to enjoy luxury in a very sensible and discreet way - but there are probably still some underlying beliefs left which cause you to sometimes feel guilty. It could be helpful to ask yourself what you are actually thinking in the moments when you feel like you „should“ declutter. Since this is seemingly causing you to feel a bit anxious or guilty from time to time, I assume you may have unconscious thoughts like „I don’t deserve this“, „I‘m not allowed to spend money on myself when there are so many more sensible things I could spend it on.“ „money is there to bring security, not fun “ Or „why should I have earned this more than anyone else who doesn’t own this bag“. I really love how self-reflective you are and how you share your thoughts and emotions with us. I think this feels common to a lot of us and we can all benefit from this conversation ❤ Love, Helena

You are so thoughtful about what you bring into your world, what brings you joy, and what to let go of. And when you do let go, you do that in a way that brings joy to someone else. Please don't question yourself! Whenever that overzealous closet curator inside of you gets riled up, let it know it can have a cocktail and chill out. You got this! Your values seem to me to be in charge and that's beautiful ❤️

Just before you uttered the word, ‘guilt’, I had it in my head. We women are especially prone to feeling guilty about SO many things! As a fellow, ‘handbags-are-my-weakness’ person, I don’t care that much about shoes, cars or a lot of other material goods. I love how you speak about ‘balance’! Enjoy! ❤👜❤

It’s interesting, because while I don’t think guilt is an exclusive feeling reserved for women only, I do recognize that we women have a generally harder time reconciling when we treat ourselves. I wonder if it partly has to do with the nurture side of us. We will gladly care for others but pause when it comes to ourselves.

Thank you for opening up. As a German with Chinese background I, too, grew up very frugal. Simultaneously caring and generous to others. It was a hard learning curve for me to enjoy things I love and spoil myself. So I totally get the guilt feeling and I absolutely relate. With that said : I am so glad you keep your collection. It's not only a Monetary thing, it's sentimental. Behind each bag there is a story, and experience, a memory you will always be reminded of when wearing the bag. Keep doing you.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I am a mom of two kids, and I while I’ve become more frugal since having kids in some ways (ie., saving and planning for their futures), Ive also learned how important it is to role model to my kids that it’s perfectly okay and healthy to enjoy life.

Yup! I can also resonate with what you're saying! I think we can apply this thinking/metaphor not just on bags, but other material things, and also - our emotional state too - we go from "I don't have enough" to "I have too much", and bounce back and forth between the two. And within each of these two thoughts, many thought branches can come off, like "I need to buy more" branching off to "what colour should I get" etc...or "I need to downsize" to branching off to "which bag should I let go of".. Eventually, we do manage to bring ourselves back to an "overview"/calm state of mind and can reflect on things. It's a bit like the "purse peace" phrase we see often. When I notice I'm too excited/overwhelmed by the same circle of thoughts, I try to busy my mind with other things until I get back to being calm. When I'm in this mindset, I can enjoy my bags more freely, with joy, and gratefulness to own this bag. Thank you for the video today! It's good to see another handbag lover reflect on their collection!

I've noticed over your many videos that you and I are a lot alike. The difference is you have insight, realization and wisdom way beyond me at your age. It's really only fully hit me recently that I can't make my business the all-consuming focus anymore, I have to quit always being sensible and responsible at the expense of what I actually want, stop always sacrificing myself for others, lighten-up and just enjoy life more - but I'm 62 and too old to just now come out of autopilot!! Time is ticking and let's all try to do more of what makes us happy. Glad you're keeping your very beautiful collection.

I'll add, as a woman significantly older than you: I've had heirloom pieces that for years I didn't look at and they are now beloved and much used. These are investments not in the "assets" sense of the word, but in terms of wardrobe classics that will be, in a way, a relationship in your life, sometimes closer and sometimes farther, but always there. Hang on to those bags. And if you add a couple, don't worry about it.

Aw wow, I hope you’re able to enjoy what you’ve worked hard for. Sometimes it helps to take a real hard look at where the guilt is coming from. While guilt can be a signal that we just made a bad move (which happens and we can work to reverse or remedy it), guilt can also just come from an ingrained habit that no longer serves us.

I say keep what makes your heart happy, if it doesn't then sell it and find something that does. Beautifully said. If there are items or bags that doesn’t spark joy. I think you should let go of it and get something that does spark joy to you. I also used to think to save bags for my kids but they’re taste changes so I can’t depend on that 100%. Everyone is different. These items should be things you enjoy. Thank YOU for choosing to share this side of yourself! It broke my heart a little hearing you be hard on yourself, but that’s because I recognize the feelings all too well myself 💔 You mentioned that you felt like the handbag purging was “being sensible” but it helps me to remember that while it LOOKS sensible, it really isn’t! If it’s based on feelings of guilt and a desire to self-punish, that’s the opposite of sensible and only pushes us further away from balance 😢 The good news is that these tendencies are fixable. Your videos have been a *huge* help in getting me to let go and live a little, and I am so grateful for that. I think a little medicine from your own videos may help you a lot. You're so articulate and considered, I enjoy listening to your soothing voice and reasoning. I have one chanel bag, a medium classic flap which I bought on a whim 10 years ago at the Rue cambon store for around 2K euros at the time. I was in my twenties and I felt like vomiting for a few days after spending so much money on a bag for myself. Sometimes I think just having one makes it all the more special and I can understand your desire to downsize. I can also see from an economic standpoint it makes sense to hold on. Either way, we aren't here for long so don't spend too much time *thinking* about what to do, just do what makes you feel good! Honestly with most materialistic things, if it's gone you won't even remember they existed in your life.

I’ve been gifting bags to family as well & sold some online. No regrets, on the contrary, it gave me joy knowing someone else can utilise my bags better than I can. I’m at a stage in life where I want to slow down & ease into early retirement/ casual work, hence looking at ways to simplify my way of living. I to get the itch to downsize as I barely use my bags. Some I haven’t even used once. I don’t go out much and if I do it’s grocery stores, errands or work. When I do go run errands/grocery stores I grab my cardholder and go. My work bag is Kate spade and dang do I mistreat her. So I feel guilty having these expensive beauty’s, but then I step back and think if I do let go and regret. I won’t be able to afford to get them back. So I calm down. The point you make about enjoying these things at this time of your life, which you consider to be your prime, is a good one because as you get older and your lifestyle changes, you will naturally start downsizing. Maybe it’s currently not about letting things go, it’s simply about bringing in less. Having other priorities for money that are still nice, such as travel or home improvements, can help keep stuff to a minimum too. No need to be so decisive so quickly.

Wear them as a reminder of your achievements and hopefully that too, will get passed down to your daughter and future daughter-in-law. I'm all for decluttering, especially now that I've learned to really appreciate quality over quantity. With that said, I'm similar to you, handbags (plus fine jewelry) are my weaknesses, however, I only purchase what I truly love and enjoy. So instead of getting rid of handbags to make space, I've downsized my wardrobe significantly over the years, limiting on clothes and shoes that I wear all the time. I still occasionally let go of a few handbags only because I haven't reached for them for at least 2-3 years. In that case, they're just collecting dust in my closet but could've been loved and used by someone else instead. Agreed with everyone if you don't need the cash or running out of space in your home, try to downsize something else that no longer serve your needs, can even be furniture or other household items/appliances. Keep those beautiful Chanel bags for now unless you don't reach for them for at least a few years, then you'll know it's time to let them go.

I agree with the community here..pls keep your Chanel bags! there are times when you just need to probably store away your bags if you think they are not currently working for you..or if you feel too overwhelmed. there are times when i'd rush into selling an item only to regret it in the future bec i do enjoy the rush of making a sale too! and yes, these are great bags and i do see the differences in each Chanel bag even though there are similarities. but there is also a reason why you're into these Chanel bags. maybe downsize the other non-Chanel items instead bec they do add up on costs (and space) too! ;)

Thank you for sharing this ❤ I find myself feeling guilty over my collection sometimes too. I know my collection is pretty modest, but I still feel like I have too much for my needs. I would lay out all my bags and SLGs out on my bed and tell my husband I think about letting a couple go. He says why? 😅 I worked hard for my collection and we have our finances in order, but I still struggle to find balance 😖

Is hard to let go pieces because the price increases, plus some of bags are so hard to get or being discontinued considering the condition on the bags and prices on the second hand. But at the end of the day are only things, we don’t need we just want. You are a great super smart person only but what you really love and want always thinking smart.

100% these are wants, not needs! I’m realizing I can just enjoy them without overthinking it too much! Thanks Yuliana!

At the end of the day, luxury goods are just goods. Unless you have an extreme sentimental attachment, I think you should just let go sooner than later as you don't know how trends and the economy will turn and it's always nice to recoup the most you can for your investment. I speak from the perspective of a watch collector, but I think the idea resonates across most if not all goods in general 💯👍

Thank you for your perspective. I agree, they’re just goods and I don’t feel much sentimental attachment. I just enjoy using them, so for now, I’ll keep enjoying. I don’t actually view these as investments. Perhaps watches are different.

Contentment isn't something you can buy. I think it really depends on the why behind the buys...If the purchases ultimately bring you joy then you are blessed to have these things and then you should keep what brings you joy. No need to forsee what this collection will mean. Appreciate what you have now and enjoy. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Hi there! Love your content and perspectives. Did you get rid of your Chanel executive tote? would love to know as I'm interested in this. Thanks! :)

Hi! Yes, I let go of the executive cerf tote because soon after buying it, I learned I wouldn’t be going into the office anymore. I now work 100% remotely and since I bought that bag as a work tote, I decided I didn’t have a use for it anymore. It was beautiful though.

If it’s space issue since you live in nyc apt, then get rid of clothing, cheaper bags, shoes first.

For sure, but I think it’s more of a mental thing than a space issue. I still have empty space left in my closets but I don’t necessarily ever want to fill it. 😂

@@hellocatwalkcity ah I c. I got rid of a lot of Chanel bags over the past 3 yrs including jumbo classic in black and medium classic in beige Clair. Only you can determine when your collection is too much. I reached the point where I didn’t care if it’s a holy grail bag or not. I actually don’t miss them at all. Been there done that move on.

Keep your bags. I just wouldn't waste any more money on luxury because these fashion houses are taking advantage of their loyal customers they are being extremely greedy.

It's the "omg 언니" for me 🩶 I'm also an 언니 to many and I find so much joy in regifting my bags to my little sisters. I'm also very like you in my sometimes aggressive need to optimize and not have more than I absolutely need.... I go through the same with my bags as what you're describing with your Chanel collection! But my husband is always telling me not to sell if I like everything I have, and I'm trying to come to adopt that mindset and live in a bit more abundance than my childhood scarcity-accustomed self is used to. Lovely video as always ❤️

Aww fellow Korean!! 👋 You’re so right about the abundance mindset vs scarcity mindset. I’ve been working on that for years. It sounds like we can learn from our own husbands! 😂
