Welcome to the seventeenth episode of the Real-World Business Switch Network Build! In today's episode, the title says it all! - We are finding devices within our switch network.
In this series, we continue where we left off in my 'Real-World Cabling' series, and continue on to building and installing a business switch network.

STP and LAG becomes easy to understand after watching this real world series, it takes only two hours worth of videos to understand the concepts (Ep. 12 - Ep. 16)... Awesome...

YES!! Great video. We do this every day to find and fix things for clients. Exactly like this. Yet we are generally working with a mix and match of various equipment vendors.

hope you do keep this all here for time Jeremy. a big part of my CCNA journey. been trying to get a job first while slowing down my learning habit. Your real-world IT hows' would be really helpful for everyone trying to understand network a bit deeper...Stay safe to you and to your family :) Regards, Joie

A good tip I use when mapping out networks, I usually run an IP scan on the network to identify all switches (of course this relies on me knowing the switches management vlan etc...) I then collect the mac address table from all switches, I then take a device that I know the mac address and find on each switch on which port it's plugged in, once I have the actual switch I can use the information from all switches to map out the links. The key here is using a device at the root of the network (think the internet router/firewall).

Deft a brutal process to do, but this makes me love the MAC queries from Prime and Netbrain. Saves sooooo much time. Sucks when they don’t have the entries anymore though when something is down.

Good Afternoon. This series is crazy exciting for me and Ive been in the field for 21 years. I am going to force my staff to watch these series. Quick question . Do you have a blank documentation template?

Try this. In Episode 11, Jeremy shows you how to create the documentation and build the Excel template. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fN52ltWfrLGdkWg.html

Great info as always, thanks! It really helped me up until min 8:19 though. I have a training assignment that will not allow me to use discovery protocols (CDP, LLDP). You mentioned connecting to the next switch in the chain, however, I have multiple trunks to other switches, so any tip on how to pinpoint what would be the next step of action? I am going crazy trying to figure out all those MAC addresses. Other than that, your videos have been very helpful in my studies. Thanks, Jeremy!

For that kind of job i use LanTopoLog which does a great job for mapping out network snmpv2/v3 capable switches. Especially on UniFI
