Love that you didn't edit out the "fails". It gives a more realistic view on how "easy" it is to find fatwood.

Fortunate to have an abundance of it in my neck of the woods . Old timers I grew up around always called it lighter knot . I like to make “fluff” with it and keep it in sealed containers for ready made tender .

I learned it as lighter knot myself back in the day. Internet knows it as fatwood more commonly so I call it that these days so people can find it if they search for it on the inter webs

Ooh, knowledge dropped, thank you! I carry a small 6" stick of this stuff strapped next to an emergency glowstick, but it's nice to know how to find it on my own :D Turns out we have some of these pines not far from here, too. A guy on a local bushcraft forum posted a huge haul he got not even two hours away. Thanks again!

Very good example of finding fat wood. I’m in eastern woodland, have plenty of pine and cedar. For bout 3 months in the spring it’s like a rain forest here, good time to have fat wood .

That was some good info, thanks. I found out about fat wood a few years ago and have yet to venture out into our local Idaho forests to look for some. We do have pines but not the same species you mentioned. I will get out there this summer I hope, and see what I can find. But in the mean time, I caved and bought a box of it at Home Depot so that I could at least stock my car kit, and go bag with some. Great fire starter and pretty darned inexpensive.

I met someone once that said they didn't even know what "fat lighter" WAS... The weird thing is, that THEY were from the same area (the southeastern U.S.) THAT I WAS. I mean a real fellow "country boy"! So I can see where this is definitely a needed video, for people to help educate themselves on basic knowledge for survival skills! Great video man! 👍 (Keep the great content coming!!)

I can never pass up a fatwood find, no matter how much I've already got (and I likely have more than I could use in a lifetime already.) Found a beauty a couple years back-- a big pine laid down, trunk about 2' through the middle, soft as a pillow, had apparently died standing and stood a while before being blown over.... All that sap in it had turned the exposed roots into 4 or 5 chunks of fatwood as long and big around as my arm. Still gotta take my walking stick to any dead pines I see lol.

I have a plank I found in perfect shape that had been buried in mud in a basement for many many years. You can cut a slice off and light it with a match. Super heavy, always thought it was mercury infused until we lit a slice. Pitch pine maybe ? Or maybe they milled fatwood.

Ah fat wood Hunter. If we look hard enough. We find fat wood we don't want to use. Put a flashlight to it in the dark. And find that fat wood peace you love . Nothing like the great fat wood. I think we all got a little fat wood collection going on. God bless. From the great fat wood Hunter. From Glenn CATT in Massachusetts. Note best fat wood is in the Bush. That's what she said. Good luck. Fat wood Hunters. Great video.

Love your channel Josh! New recent subscriber here. You have a great ability to really explain things well. One question I am curious about that I don’t think you addressed is, are other evergreen trees capable of producing fat wood? Something like Douglas Fir, spruce species, etc.? If so which are best if pines are not a resource? In my area of Colorado, we have mostly spruce and fir trees and was wondering what the best strategy of finding fat wood wood be or am I wasting my time looking for it where there are no actual pine trees? Thanks for your insights and your great videos!
