That is "Twist n Shout" reappearing! It happens sometimes...., plants reverting back to the original variety! If you stay tuned, for an upcoming video (that we intend to post soon), you will see David talk about this, and describe what to do... i.e. remove the shoot. Unless of course (out of interest), you want to keep the two types of flower on the same plant. If you decide to do this, just keep an eye out, because sometimes the reverted section can be more vigorous and eventually take over. Thanks for watching and posting this observation. @OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and your nice appreciative comment. We planted these hydrangeas in the same manner as David outlines in this video entitled "How to plant a shrub": kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rt-Sh5agx9_IgKs.html. and as you will see, we incorporate plenty of organic matter in the base of the hole, and also in the backfill. We did not fertilize the plants because in our trials we wanted them to show their true characteristics. Secondly, the organic matter as it breaks down releases nutrient and thirdly, when we grow our plants in the nursery, we use a special slow-release fertilizer formulation in our composts that continues to feed the plants after they leave the garden center and are planted. Later on, if you prefer, you could apply a little fertilizer in early spring, but it's important not to over do it, because that could lead to soft, rank growth that may be susceptible to winter damage. We hope this all helps to explain our process. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. That's a shame. In talking to gardeners in colder areas that in some years doesn't get much snow cover. They tell us that mounding up the crown of the plants with a generous pile of extra mulch in late autumn, helps to insulate the base of the stems. Then in spring when they rake back the mulch, they find that the new remontant shoots grow out (like our plants) to flower later in the summer. Perhaps, this might be worth trying, or alternatively of course, try some of the ones that have better stem hardiness or maybe some of other types of hydrangeas (smooth or panicle ones) that are much more tolerant of cold, snowless winters. Thanks for watching and posting your comment. Have you subscribed to our channel? @OverdevestNurseries

Thank you for asking an important question. The plants featured (except for Endless Summer Pop Star, which was only planted last year) have been planted in this area for almost 3 growing seasons. In other words, at the end of this growing season, they will have been in the ground for 3 years. This is important because often it takes a few years for plants to settle in and become established. The plants are not protected, except for a 2" deep annual mulch of shredded bark, which is applied in early spring. In addition, as you will see in this previously posted video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbubacanzs7LoIU.htmlsi=KE9txzZrC4B5pKh0 our nursery is located in Southern New Jersey in USDA Zone 7b We hope this answers your questions. It is a fairly large growing selection of our native Hydrangea arborescens (Smooth Hydrangea). It is popular with pollinators, but unfortunately (in our experience) not with gardeners and home owners! We grew it years ago, and found that it just doesn't have enough floral attraction for most people to want to have it in their gardens. There's a lot of good work being done by plant breeders on this species, so when you are visiting our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ be on the look out, because they have access to at least some of these superior selections. Also, stay tuned because we have some very promising new ones in the works, that you will be able to consider too. Have you subscribed to our channel? @OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Ай бұрын
Many people are finding success growing various sorts of Hydrangeas in Zone 5 (and colder), so by carefully selecting varieties that correct for your zone, that shouldn't be an issue. Especially if you keep in contact with the best, most reputable garden centers in your area. Dealing with the clay soil however could be a tougher (and as you correctly mention a longer term) challenge. Adding copious amounts of organic matter will definitely help. And for us, raised beds are the way to go! So, if you are intending to grow plants that require good drainage, then we would suggest creating raised beds. Together with the organic matter, this helps to open up the soil, allow moisture to drain away, and allows the plant roots to get moisture when they need it, but not be set in wet, cold, soggy, saturated positions. We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel yet? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post new videos (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. Thanks for watching, nice to hear from you again. You don't have to dead head them, but it helps to keep them fresher and nicer looking (especially the reblooming ones that David is talking about). So if you have the time and the inclination, snipping off the old flowers as they discolor. will help to keep the display looking better. We hope this helps.
