Love hearing photographers talking passionately about their cameras. I moved to AZ with the intent of photographing every square yard of the state. Worked in Capitol. Left tarred and feathered as a liberal in 2004. Miss the beauty. Probably won’t return even though political climate has changed. Am looking forward to the rest of this series with great anticipation.

I feel the same way about my two film Leicas. It's not a snobby thing as I shoot loads of other cameras. When it comes down to it they are great machines, that last and are beautiful objects. The resale aspect is also overlooked. Most Leica film cameras go up in value.

I'll also be joining you on a similar journey as I just acquired my first Leica, an M3. I already have quite a collection of SLR film cameras and a couple of rangefinders but I just wanted to experience a Leica. Good luck on your new "finding"!

Love it Mac. Great video and I feel you. Got back into photography in 2011 with digital after learning with film as a kid and then a long gap. It’s now my living and while I have amazing kit for work (Sony) it doesn’t light my fire for personal photography. Enter a Nikon FE2 (I learned on a borrowed Praktica and Nikon FM in the ‘80s) and I’m loving it. I’ve been eyeing Leica for a while now, having done some research and got through the white noise of the haters, and there’s definitely something. Hope to add an M to my bag soon and I’m trying to re-cast the work I do to more slower-paced documentary stuff that doesn’t have the reliance on AF performance that my current work does. Then I really could slim the kit down and even use M kit for work. Anyhoo, really enjoying your videos, thanks.

Great Vid Mac! I was a Canon SLR wedding photographer for over 10years and now own 2 M Leica. Your story resonated with me as I was also burnt out after many years. I did keep my medium format film camera and recently shot some portraits and looking back, the film quality is just so beautiful. Looking forward to your next ep!

Great video, you touched on qualities that most of us have in the pursuit of enjoying our passion of photography. I’m sure like you, we transition from film to digital through many different camera brands, striving for the ultimate image. Funny like you, I’ve saved most of my cameras because each camera provided a personal experience in the time-line of our photographs. I avoided Leica because I didn’t think I had the skillcraft to handle a Leica, but back in the 80s, I did pick up a M6 w 40mm Summicron f/2, but it slowed me down as a fast action documentary photographer, so I evolved with digital equipment. Now in my retirement years, slowing down, I’m back to Leica, because the action of shooting with a Leica is slower. 40 years ago, I didn’t think I had the skillcraft to handle a Leica, now I am looking forward to incorporating Leica as my main go to camera for traveling. I became affixed with the automation of DSLRs, that my transition back to Leica and manual focusing began with the Leica automatic Vario-X and Q, both with fix lenses (great lenses) and now I’m shooting with the M240. The bottom line, as in the 80s, the Leica quality image is unique and amazingly familiar as I return to Leica as my go to camera.

You try a 40mm lens on your Leica. It's such an underrated focal length. The best of both worlds (35mm and 50mm) Voigtlander make a few different 40mm lenses, including a 1.4 version.
@filibertkraxner305
@filibertkraxner305 4 жыл бұрын
Good suggestion, but I don't think Leica has any M cameras that include frame lines for 40mm, so composition would not be as precise (if that's an issue). Personally, I love the focal length. Used to shoot 75mm on Pentax 67, and now a 50mm of Fuji GFX, which are roughly equivalent. On Leica, I use 35/50/90, also because of the frame lines.

My journey: 1. Nikon F2 Photomic (1998) 2. Nikon Coolpix 950ME (2001) 3. Kodak DCS760C/720X with AF D lenses (2008) 4. Kodak DCS620C (late 2012) 5. Kodak DCS620X (late 2013) 6. Kodak DCS Pro14nx (mid 2014, sold later, bad build quality and ugly design) 7. Nikon F2AS and F2A (2014, started shooting film again with my F2 Photomic, I originally wanted to sell) 8. Nikon D3 (early 2016, sold 2020, bad UI, color reproduction, design of vertical shutter release) 9. Nikon 1 V2 (late 2016) 10. First adapted Leitz glass on the 1 V2 (135mm 1:4.5 Hektor, 90mm 1:2.8 Elmarit, 50mm 1:2 Summicron and finally 35mm 1:2.8 Summaron) 11. First Leica, the M5 (early 2017, love) 12. Rolleicord Model I Art Deco (mid 2017) 13. Second Leica, the M8 (late 2017, more love) 14. Hasselblad H3DII-31 with a set of lenses (late 2018) 15. Wideangle lens for the M8, the 21mm 1:4 Super-Angulon (late 2018) 16. Nikon D4 (late 2018) 17. Hasselblad H2 with film back (2019) 18. Third Leica, the M9-P (late 2019) 19. Fourth Leica, the original M4 (mid 2020) Now I am selling all my Nikon plastic lenses and keeping just the MF jewels.

Nikkor Plastic Lenses?? Which Ones? My Nikkor Lenses from the 1960's, and 1970's Are Metal, & Real Glass Elements And as still sharp today as I take care of them as each lens HAS UV Filters to protect them. 20mm 3.5UD, 24mm 2.8, 28mm 3.5, 35mm 2.8, 50mm 2.0, 85mm 2.8, 105mm, 135mm 3.5, 43~86mm 3.5 ALL Nikkors I maybe a Nikon Guy as with Nikon F, and F2, FM, and F100 with drives, and grips, and I also have a Fuji S3Pro-S5Pro, and a Nikon D2Xs. I am happy in what I have... And I love to scan my film in using these lenses..... I do not believe in Journey's in getting a Lecia in which I am not a Leica Hater, I too have a Leica IID, and it is a beautiful model but I too have my Leica Clones like a Contax II, and III with Zeiss lenses, and my Canon 7, and Vt. So I believe in what I have, and also thinking of getting the photograph. In which I rather, and believe in getting the image in whatever camera you have, and own. As the story in the Emperor New Clothes - Well I am the little boy as he said to the Naked Emperor: "I do not see it" And I am 64 . Sorry Mac, as again I do not See It..

Alex Carrillo As I described that all my AF Nikkors were D type ones and these are just cheap plastic junk that sooner or later will fall apart and will get electronic failures (lesser than AF-S lenses but they will fail). I will hold on to my classic Nikkors forever: 1. 24mm 1:2.8 N-Auto 2. 25-50mm 1:4 Ai-S 3. 35mm 1:1.4 Ai-S 4. 35-70mm 1:3.5 Ai 5. 50-135mm 1:3.5 Ai-S 6. 50mm 1:1.4 S-C-Auto Ai converted 7. 50mm 1:1.4 S-Auto 8. 50-300mm 1:4.5 Auto Ai converted 9. 85mm 1:1.4 T* ZF (Zeiss) 10. 135mm 1:2 Ai-S Of course all of them have either UV, Skylight or Pro 1D protectors mounted.

For 135 Film I shoot either with two Nikon FM2n´s mostly ( I have a silver, black and Titanium one but when im out I only use Two body’s at the same time. ) with a 28mm, a 50mm and a 135mm. I also use a 28mm Shift, a 35mm, a 200mm, a 300mm and a 15mm Occasionally or I use My Leica M3 and MA’s ( I own a silver and a black one) mostly I use my 50mm Summicron, 28mm Sumicron and my 135mm Elamrit ( with the Gogles ) . But I also own the new 28mm Summaron, 18mm Elmar, 35mm Summicron and a 90mm Summicron. I use the M3 for the 50mm and Longer lenses and the MAs for the wider ones. I love this kit for 35mm Film! For me it fits perfect. I have a wide choice of lenses and can choose between slr and rangefinders.

Very excited to witness and hear about your journey. I find it particularly interesting because my journey is almost 180-degrees of where you are going. I have been shooting Leica for a long time--both digital and film. While I would never part with my film MP and I love M10-D, I have ben migrating back to Nikon for film. A while back I came upon my first cameras (Nikon FG20 and FA) and 5- E-series lenses. I assumed these camera had been lost in a lifetime of moves. I had not seen them in 20-years. While packing to move west to Phx, I opened a box and there they were, a time capsule. Anyhow, I love shooting them (the shutter sound is so different from Leica) and have since added and S3 and F4S to the mix. I can't wait to see where you go with this series. Cheers--lt

For many years I thought Leica is only for wealthy nerds, collectors and posers (I still think that sometimes). A few years back I got my hands on a Leica CL and was astonished about the handling and image quality and was sold on it. I shoot with 3 other camera systems as well but Leica has become an important part of my gear planning.

I own some Leica gear and the true is the price will always bother me, everything I don’t like about Leica would probably go away if they were less expensive, the funny thing is that we keep those prices were they are since we keep buying stuff, since the last year I get a new Leica video on my feed almost daily, hundreds on youtubers are putting these videos out, go to eBay and you will see the price of a M6 it’s almost the double they were a year ago, I hope this pushes Leica to start giving better support for their film cameras right now looks like there is only one person working there and the quality of the work is not the best. I’ll keep an eye on your upcoming videos

Hi Mac, Just a note to let you know (you may know this already) I am kinda a Zeiss guy. I have zm’s for my Zeiss rangefinder. It is called the Zi and the Zm camera. When I first bought mine it was the Zi, but I see it referred to as the Zm also. I use Zeiss lenses across my Nikon cameras so I can stay consistent. Anyway if you nose around on the Zeiss website you can send your Zi back to Zeiss Germany and they will repair it. I like that this can be done, however, they do not make it easy. Or you may be upset and just keep it as a doorstop. They are not as rugged as Leica’s, however, I love that viewfinder and 1/2000. For me the Leica’s just don’t have the lightness of feel. The Zi does have a lousy focus patch, I know. I have a beautiful Leica M4P and sadly, it just stays in the bag. It is a tank though. I wish I could find the grip for the Zi, however, they are almost never for sale. With all its faults I love my Zi. I have a chrome one (like yours - love it!) and a black SW. Good Luck. Cheers

Also btw I own a Hand me down Nikon D7100 with kit lens 18-105mm 3.5-5.6 And I'm in dilemma 35mm f1.8G lens is a little expensive , what do you reckon should I save pocket money for it, because of lockdown the price of lens increased very much near the retail price which was like half the retail price before. Because Indians pay about 100% taxes upon imported electronics items.

Vishal Kumar hey Vishal I just saw this and I’m answering because I owned that exact camera and lens. The 18-105 is good for a cheap(er) kit lens but if you can, get that 35mm F1.8 (the least expensive one is the DX version on made specifically for APS-C sensors like the D7100). It’s a great lens and you’ll feel a little bit of magic in your images compared to the zoom. Hope that helps.

Ha! You're "finding M-series Leicas," which are fast and easy compared to the "Barnack Leicas" of Dr. Ernst Leitz and Max Berek. A real "finding Leica" tale would begin with the "motion picture film end"-using cameras. But then, you would have to learn how to cut a "Leica tongue" and master the "take it slow" pace of 39mm screw mount Leicas. Then there would be the uncoated/sometimes fuzzy/sometimes flare-ridden 50mm f/1.5-16 Summarits and the uncoated "speed lens of the 1930's," 50mm f/1.5-9 Taylor-Hobson Xenon. How about the "peep sight" separate range- and viewfinders of the Orthochromatic black-and-white film era. Those "soft gelatin" films melt away if the processing temperatures rose above 68 degrees Fahrenheit/20 degrees Celsius temperatures in the lab. (Real World photography then was "tropic" in the Summer and "fragile" in the Winter.) Would the 28mm f/6.3 Hektor and 105mm f/6.3 Mountain Elmar Leica lenses of the pre-World War II years cramp your style? (These are the days of Kodak Panatomic and Super XX films.)

I do not believe in Journey's in getting a Lecia in which I am not a Leica Hater, I too have a Leica IID, and it is a beautiful model but I too have my Leica Clones like a Contax II, and III with Zeiss lenses, and my Canon 7, and Vt as these are MY Leicas including my Film Nikons too with all Manual Focus NIKKOR lenses. So I believe in what I have, and also thinking of getting the photograph - The IMAGE is important than lugging a $1000 dollar lens. In which I rather, and believe in getting the image in whatever camera you have, and own. As the story in the Emperor New Clothes - Well I am the little boy as he said to the Naked Emperor: "I do not see it" And I am 64 . Sorry Mac, as again I do not See it SAY ALL.... Sorry, and as we also said in Art School, and also working at the camera store for 33 years: "KISS - Keep It It Simple Stupid".... And also I seen your other video of the Bessa... Treat it Nice, and I too have that lens as well.... Very Sharp as I use it Right...
