Thanks @Dyna2023 for the comment and I’m sure you’re not the first person to raise eyebrows at Paul’s statement and throw a big BS flag, lol. In fact, the first time I (Joe) heard Paul say that, I had to stop and think about it because Paul and I have basically been hunting and calling elk for pretty near the same amount of years. This year being my 42nd. In fact Paul might have 5 years or so on me. The statement is he has called over a thousand bulls into bow range. First off, there are some things to keep in mind. That could have been preseason, archery, rifle or any time from August to let’s say November. It doesn’t mean someone shot or had a shot. In fact you can have a bull within 10 yards and not get a shot. But the bull was definitely in bow range. And let’s say for arguments sake that we define archery range as 60 yards and in. With that said, After running the numbers from my own hunts, along with those I’ve helped with or guided as well as time in the woods working my craft, the years of calling for myself and others, let’s look at the math. With four decades under my belt, I know I have easily called in 30 bulls (spikes, rags and a few toads) a year within 60 yards and most way closer. Some years more, some possibly less. While guiding, I have called in 30 bulls within archery range in September alone. You also have to remember that the 80’s and 90’s were ridiculously easy to call bulls into range. 2000 to about 2010, maybe even to 2015 still fairly easy. A person might say that with the boom and popularity of archery elk hunting and with the increased calling, it’s has gotten somewhat more challenging in the last 3 to 5 years. But I still have had 5 to 10 bulls within 60 yards in a single day. They weren’t all shooters in some folks eyes, but still bulls. So using the median number of 30 bulls a year, that’s 300 bulls in 10 years and 1200 bulls in 40 years. So as they say on NFL games… “after further review, there is no flag”. I have no doubt Paul has called in over a thousand bulls into archery range. Thanks bud again for the comment!
