Hello lovely people! In this video, I take a look at "signs" and synchronicity from a skeptical perspective. I unpack some of the psychology behind these phenomena, and explore how synchronicities can still be significant for us even if we know rationally that they're just coincidences, and not supernatural signs from spiritual agents or the universe.
Hope you enjoy the video, and let me know in the comments what your take on signs/synchronicity is!

I love this video so much! I have been in the ‘everything is a sign’ space, trying to understand what the universe was telling me to wear today and which way I should drive to work. I was really unwell, anxious and confused. I didn’t know anything about witchcraft back then, but had a pretty intense religious upbringing. Letting all that go was a huge part of my healing journey, but now, as a skeptical witch myself, I really appreciate synchronicity. As you say, I find it fun. I definitely think of it as communication from my unconscious, but I love my unconscious. She is really loving and compassionate, so the synchronicities make me feel held and reinforce that I’m in alignment with myself and my core truth. I know of two friends who have both had hugely significant synchronous experiences that helped pull them out of depression. One told me it literally saved her life. So yeah, coincidence or not, I am glad our brains see these patterns and grab onto them in a way that can sometimes pull us back from the edge. Thank you for making this channel and putting all this effort into sharing your ideas and your practice. It’s super cool to find another witch like me! I look forward to watching more of your videos.

That’s a really wonderful way to put it, about loving and embracing your unconscious. I really like that! And I’ve kind of been in that space before too-trying to find meaning in everything. It does eventually get stressful and confusing, because you’re really giving up your own agency and decision-making powers. I’m glad you’re in a better place now with synchronicities 😊 because yes, even if it is the unconscious, that doesn’t mean they can’t be amazing and life changing! Thanks so much for your comment! 💕

I have these awesome "encounters" with music, when new songs with the perfect lyrics for my situation come up on radio/yt/playlist, that I like calling serendities. It's not as grave as "sign from universe" but also quite meaningful with a tender- playful touch.

I see mirror hours and inverted hours like 3-4 times a day, and it's always different ones there's no consistency. At first I really tried to figure out the meaning of each one before realizing that none of it made sense with my situation unless I tried way to hard which made it feel made up anyway. I chose to see mirror numbers as a reassurance nod that I am doing ok, and the inverted numbers as a reminder to stay grounded and take care of my responsibilities when needed to avoid getting too much in my head. And there's the special 9:11 (911) which I started noticing shortly before I realized I was in a burnout which I now use to remind me of the warning signs to avoid burning out again and what my burn out taught me about what to do and what to avoid. I enjoyed giving my own meanings a lot more than following a random person's interpretation pretend to have the absolute truth. It allowed me to pick meanings that made sense in my own context and to phrase them in a way that doesn't make me anxious and doesn't make unrealistic promises either. It allowed me to pick messages that I actually need to hear, and that are healthy for me.

Hit the nail on the head - as usual! Love this. I used to be a fundamentalist Christian who believed in a lot of signs and wonders. Over the years as I left that behind, interestingly I have pretty much stopped seeing those sorts of mystical coincidences and signs because I realized it was confirmation bias and my pattern-recognition faculties kicking in, making me see connections that aren’t real. But recently I’ve had some moments of coincidences that were small but still felt significant to me - I realized it was just me seeing patterns but it still felt meaningful to me. Thank you for your excellent explanation of what is going on in our heads! But also how even skeptics (like me - also pantheist), agnostics and atheists can still find meaning in them. The idea that it may be my subconscious trying to communicate a message, that a random event is helping me understand or process something going on inside me is a really compelling and concrete way to understand what’s going on! I love your videos! I didn’t know a “skeptical witch” was a thing but that is what I have been doing since I started about 2 years ago without realizing it. Thanks for helping me put words to and better understand my own beliefs better! You’re also giving me some language to better articulate my beliefs/practices to others in my life! I appreciate your work a lot. I don’t know any others like me though personally. Any online communities you could recommend for me to check out to meet some like-minded folks? Cheers!

I really like your idea that synchronicities are the unconscious trying to contact us. A lot of my spirituality ties into "parts therapy", where you identify and name parts of your self, and also create "resources": imagined figures you can turn to for help and advice. I've felt bad in the past that perhaps the voices of my "deities" are no different than the voices of my "parts" or my "resources"--that somehow that makes them not real. But what if the spirits/deities that some people identify as the source of synchronicities and other messages are not actually something DIFFERENT from the unconscious, but are simultaneously both? In that way, a message could come from the unconscious and still be, in some people's terms, a message from a spirit or a deity. ...It's hard sometimes to reconcile my skeptical side with my spiritual side, but your videos are really helping. Thank you for making this channel.

I experienced a psychotic episode 5 years ago where I saw signs everywhere and jumped to supernatural conclusions… I still have a tendency to see signs, but I just don’t give them as much attention. Recently, though, I attended a week long silent retreat and afterwards I decided to look up some KZfaq videos about synchronicity. That sent me down a rabbit hole because there are so many videos that talk about synchronicity vaguely and that jump to supernatural conclusions about it. A lot of popular videos about synchronicity will say make sure you pay attention to these signs! And I’m like, dang this seems to be the oppositional to the idea of looking inwardly towards trusting yourself. It’s basically hinting at the idea that you can’t trust just yourself, you need these external signs to be complete. Do You have any tips for not letting yourself be influenced by people who try to influence us to believe in supernatural conclusions?

So great that you mentioned Tanya Luhrmann! I loved her book Persuasion of the Witch's Craft :) Personally I tend to shift between seeing synchronicities as signs from the universe or uniquely as my intuition manifesting. I guess my belief in the magical is fluid and can change depending on the day! :) In any case I find them as you rightly explained to be so useful and powerful. For example, whenever I now get anxious about my post-doctoral opportunities and whether I would like to stay in academia or not. I just tell myself that the universe has until now guided me to find paths that suit me, so I trust it to send me signs along the way that will help me :)

I like that idea of belief as fluid-this is definitely something I try to incorporate into my practice as well. Feed the algorithm gods. Something you didn't touch on was how you can actually anchor synchronicities to special meanings as a means of a personal reminder. For example for me 11 is the number of the god Hades who is special to me. When I see the number 11 it reminds me of his virtues and to try to be just, and to try to offer good advice when asked, and that sometimes darkness is more honest than light. Or the number 3 which I associate with Ares the god of Peace. Or the number 6 which I associate with Prometheus. Then there is 4 which I associate with Brigid. There is also Frigga which I associate with Friday, Luna which I associate with Monday. Each reminds me of different things they embody.

Ooh, yes I really like this! I wish I had mentioned that in the video, because it's a great point! As a D&D player, whenever I see the number 333 it makes me think of Tharizdun, the god of madness and entropy... which doesn't sound great, but I take it as a reminder that this world is both orderly and chaotic, and sometimes we just have to embrace the chaos and the insanity!
@martinspear8928
@martinspear8928 3 жыл бұрын
@@theskepticalwitch6611 I understand what you mean even if I think the phrasing is counter productive. Chaos and order are not opposed but Chaos is order, our understanding of cause and effect just break down at a certain point and that is what we call Chaos. Within my primordial pantheon Kaoso (Chaos) and Entropoi (Entropy) are the originators of the first Dia Konflikto (divine conflict) and all conflict is a reflection and continuation of that conflict.

Okay... let me first say that I've been a practicing "witch", Hexe, or whatever you want to label it, for more than 40 years. I'm also an amature artist, writer, sculptor/wood carver as well. I am and always have been very good with my hands, and creating things. ...and I got started in the whole magic/mental manipulation thing through meditation, which I was introduced to through a martial arts class when I was 14 or so. ...and I have had MANY incidences of "synchronicity" in my life, most of which turned out t be directly connected with something I had or would do... More or less a "signpost" that something was at work other than just my own mind. Let me tell you about a recent event, and see what you think: I've been working on writing a story these past few weeks that involves witchcraft, science, and all the usual day-to-day things. Part of this story involves someone being turned into a fish and being deposited into a lake for a very long time before they were restored to human form. Since this story takes place during a roadtrip from Texas to Panama, I chose the Incan culture for this aspect of the story, but after a while, wondered if I needed to go to an older culture, such as the Mayans or Aztecs... so I began researching exactly when and how long the Incas were around. I finally decided that 800 years in a lake was more than long enough, and stuck with my original intentions. Fast forward to last night: I took a break from writing and decided to catch up on a couple of the TV shows I tend to watch. Being an old comic book fan, I chose the latest episode of "Stargirl". halfway through the episode, my jaw dropped, when a teacher in the background of a scene was going over the Incan empire, and the dates I had just looked up a couple of days before. Does that mean anything? I don't know... maybe the universe is simply showing its approval for my choice... ...and maybe it doesn't mean a damn thing. lol One way or the other, it seems pretty strange to me that references to the Incas and their empire would come up in a TV show that wasn't a documentary of some kind. Anyway, it's just one more in a lifetime of such occurrences for me.

That is a cool synchronicity for sure! I don't really believe in the idea of a universe trying to tell us things, but I nonetheless appreciate moments like these, and often do interpret them as "signs" of being on the right path... I enjoy those moments of reassurance, regardless of whether anything "supernatural" is at play or not.
@guarddog318
@guarddog318 2 жыл бұрын
@@theskepticalwitch6611 - Here's a question for ya: People label things as "supernatural" when they're outside of their ability to explain or understand them. But given how little the human race actually knows about some things... isn't it quite presumptive to say they "above natural", when we really don't have a clue what's behind them, or what the cause is? I grew up in a house that had something odd or unusual going on in it. Most people would say it was haunted. So for me, those supernatural things that happened were quite normal and natural... even though I have no real explanation for what was going on. I can tell you for a fact that no mundane cause was ever found for what was seen, heard, and experienced by a fairly large number of people, most of which had no knowledge beforehand of the situation.
@theskepticalwitch6611
@theskepticalwitch6611 2 жыл бұрын
@@guarddog318 And I definitely understand that! I know for a lot of people who practice witchcraft, magic is seen as being a natural phenomenon, and I respect that. I do use the term supernatural to describe things mainstream science doesn’t necessarily have an explanation for, but I also acknowledge that what we currently can know via science is likely only a tiny fraction of reality... and I do agree that scientific/intellectual knowledge is only one kind of knowledge, only one way of seeing the world that doesn’t necessarily have to be mutually exclusive with other ways of knowing. And I think there’s definitely a kind of beauty in not knowing, in mystery. So while I think rationality is important, I also don’t think it’s always necessary to rationalize all of our experiences... sometimes it’s best to be content with that mystery, and to embrace imagination, or the “supernatural.”

I guess what I struggle to reconcile is seeing these experiences as special or meaningful when rationally I know they are not. You mentioned feeling a special way when your shower was glitching and wind blew over your plant, and I just wonder how I can feel that, when like you I would be able to see it rationally? In what way did it improve the experience for you? I also struggle with existentialism and the thought of there being no point, purpose or future beyond this existence. I do not believe in any religious interpretation of "afterlife", but I do find it curious that I have now leaned hard into "There's nothing", despite not necessarily having evidence to support that, aside from my disbelief in organized religion? Does that make sense? I "practice" witchcraft, but sometimes it just makes me feel silly or like i'm "playing". It's a bit sad to me, because I was very imaginative as a child and a heavy "magical thinker", but after my two undergrads and medical school I just struggle to connect to anything outside of rational. I went to witchcraft because it was more ecclectic and self-guided, but I would like to connect with something spiritually.
@theskepticalwitch6611

Thanks for your comment--I definitely understand how you feel with the whole "feeling silly" thing... I think getting to a place where you no longer feel like that may just take time and practice, and potentially learning to embrace the silliness of it. I think being comfortable with being silly, and coming from a place of not having to take witchcraft or ritual so seriously can really help make that space for being able to have transformative or magical experiences. Finding ways that help you connect with that childlike wonder and sense of magic may help you move past that need to always interpret everything rationally... like maybe reading fantasy books you enjoyed as a kid, or reconnecting with some of the imaginative/play activities you engaged in. Things that may help you get used to that sense of suspended disbelief. I think witchcraft *can* be really silly and playful, and I definitely don't think that's a bad thing!
