Id suggest adding a metal bowl with water on top of the wood stove to add some humidity to the room. My family does that and it helps with the dryness which will inevitably hurt your beautiful monstera!

Hi Becky! Certified horticulturist here - just wanted to mention that Monsteras like above average humidity, so I would keep close watch on yours. Being too close to a fireplace can really dry out the plant and because it's sentimental and so beautiful, I would hate for you to lose some or all of your plant baby! Love, love, love the fireplace and new tile! Your house is such a dream!

The only thing that is missing from the fireplace is a big pot of water to put humidity into the space. Plus this fireplace is better for an power outage or when you're snowed in. I remember being a kid ( and later when I lived in my childhood home as an Adult) my Mother always had hot water at the ready even when they put the bigger wood stove in the basement because she had a huge blue speckled pot on it. But she also used it to make chili and stews on cold days that simmered all day long and the best homemade spaghetti sauce was made by a Friend's Mom the same way. My Mother would have my little brother and myself pretend that we were like Little House on the Prairie, tho we lived more like the Big Woods lol. We made Maple syrup on snow and did art projects and she would read us chapters of the books. Something she always did at bedtime so in the afternoon it was special. But she also used an old Dutch oven to cook treats in or cook a chicken or roast on the stove top and the best was when she made popcorn for us on it. As much as my Brother and I didn't look forward to lugging wood to the basement every Summer or having to go down in the winter to bring it upstairs to feed the fire. It made memories that we will have forever and we were happy that we were so warm when so many other people had wait for the power to come back on to be warm. I still remember after big storms and outages, when all was restored, watching the news on the 19 inch black and white TV, on one of the 3 channels that worked in the middle of nowhere, horrified by the many people who froze to death, or lost their lives/ family's due to fires started by someone desperate to warm their family, using candles or the worst one whole family's lost to carbon monoxide from the old gas heaters.

I got the biggest smile on my face when I saw you place the Readers Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself manual on your shelf. Hubby and I bought our first home in 1973 (we're so old) and we have/had a copy of that book. I'm not all about the retro vibe but you are so interesting and extremely talented that I love watching you work. Thanks for the many enjoyable hours watching what you do best.

Becky, I graduated from High School in 1979. My parents built a house in 1976. They put in two wood burning stoves almost exactly like what you and Austin just installed. I’d say that’s ‘70’s styling!

I watch these videos with my mom (she loves them) and she really wanted me to tell you to put that chair you had in your dressing room in your old house by the wood stove. She said it’d be such a comfy corner to sit in.

Seeing you two interact makes my heart all fuzzy and happy. And of course the house looks incredible.

for your stereo, there is probably corrosion (oxidation) on the contacts in the volume control. get a can of deoxit contact cleaner, take the knobs off and spray the deoxit down the shaft of the controls. give it a few turns back and forth to help spread out the deoxit, and you should be good to go.

I grew up in the 70's and I love all the retro finds you put into your decor. The shinny tiles will be easy to clean and they have the right colour. We've had a wood stove for thirty years, and we love it! Power can go out, not a problem, I even cooked on it. It's messy and alot of work, making everything dusty, but there is no heat like it! At the price of oil and electricity these days, people are going back to using wood. Our old house would be freezing without it as the oil furnace doesn't even come close to keeping the house warm. You'll just want to make sure to sweep your pipe once a year to get the build-up off to avoid cheminey fire. Job well done! Can't wait to see more rooms done!

Becky, you are amazing.....your home looks like the one I grew up in. You may want to put a kettle on the stove to add moister in-to the house, wood stove can really dry your skin and sinuses out.

Ahww I also have a special bond with my monstera. When I moved to Amsterdam with my best friend, our moms came to help moving and bought us a tiny monstera as a housewarming gift. That was about 10 years ago and when we went our separate ways, we both took a piece of the monstera. We still have them and they're huuuuge beautiful plants now and a cute reminder of our fun time living together 🥰

I love this. The only thing I’d change is to use light neutrals and lime wash the textured wall behind the stove to lean into the difference and make it more of a feature than an odd choice of the previous owner.

Have you thought of doing a bio ethanol insert? You could get one of the retro stoves you like or maybe even gut the electric one you have and just put the insert inside. It doesn’t create smoke or anything and it’s how I’ve gotten away with not fixing the flue on my wood burning fireplace in my 1935 cottage lol $500 fix vs $3500 repair? Yes, please!

The space looks great. I think that is the best tile choice and might be easier to clean because of the glossy finish.

For the awesome RETRO RECORD PLAYER: My partner said the potentiostat is clogged with carbon buildup on the contacts within the dial. There is a spray they used to sell that you spray a bit and then twist the knob to and fro to coat the contacts. He said you could find it online, but maybe also at Guitar Center or a audiophile hi-fi stereo shop (if those exist ANYWHERE anymore), or maybe call around at a small appliance repair shop (like a sewing machine, vacuum, etc type place).

as someone who doesn’t know a lot about diy, building, interior design, etc., i find it so fun watching these videos bc i learn so much and it doesn’t necessarily feel educational it just feels fun! (also turns out i really love wood and warm tones in houses!)

It looks very nice! I was wondering about other fireplace tools you need (brush, bucket) and the storage for wood. Maybe where the plant is you can create a nice low cabinet to store that (and have the plant on top) or even a nice reading by the fire nook putting visions on it. Just some ideas!

The pots on the stereo/volume knobs are likely dirty. You can clean those. If you needed to replace for new ones I bet you could do that yourself, too. Good luck!

We have a wood-burning stove that fits into our fireplace and I have a beautiful wood mantel over it you know you just don't get that kind of heat, they. I'm hoping you got a wood-burning stove that has a fan and pushes the heat out it's wonderful, also I don't know if you have hands and fans in that room but with high ceilings like that it's ideal to have fan that pushes the hot air down.

Oh my goodness Becky that wood stove and that tile are the perfect combination. I also love that huge Monstera and you are correct in cleaning off the leaves, plants need to be able to photosynthisis. I also love that diaco ball that is the coolest. I love that book that someone gave you, and I love things from the 70's because I grew up then and do love vintage things. I would really love to see some DIYs from that cool book. Also adding a container with water and some speces makes the room havee more humidity and gives it a really cool smell throughout that area. when I use my woodburning stove I put a metal container with spices in the water and it makes my house smell really nice, cloves or cinnamon or other spices work, like potpourri. When I was younger, the house we lived in was older and from the 70s. It had a big old cast iron woodstove in the living room. So even though this isn't your dream stove, it's still similar to what they had then. I think the woodstove was original to the house?

There are cool cast iron humidifiers made to work with the fireplace... dragons, trains a moose! A good place to start is Plow & Hearth, we've had ours for 20+ years. Also this looks amazing!!

OK, I am back, and after seeing the amount of space for the tile in front of the fireplace, I agree that option b is best. I thought the tire area was going to be much smaller originally. Hello there I Love everything about the 70's since I was born in 64 so I lived through that era and it was the coolest and grooviest time. Simpler time for sure. I just love everything you have done so far in your super cool house. I hope you do things out of that book I know they will be so awesome. Can't wait to see what you decide to do next. I hate to be a buzzkill, but you might get cracking in your tiles. It's best to have mortar between the subfloor and the concrete board to stop movement and cracks popping through to the tile. I know this because it happened to my mom's bathroom... a "pro" did it. Also, if you tile again, it's better to put down thinset, then use the appropriate trowel with the notches to the right thickness as set by the tile instructions. Also, back buttering the tile helps with adhesion. You might have tiles pop up. I'm sorry. It's really pretty otherwise and looks nice. I just want you to know in case it goes bad, you know why.

We had a faux MALM in Chicago in the 1960's & 1970's. It was identical, but electric! I've now been looking for one for 20 years. I loved that thing.
