One of the first things needed to do, if find a place to shelter from the elements when homeless. This is an abandoned piece of property that used to have storage bins. I am going to be using one of them until I am chased out.

I worked with a guy years ago that was homeless. He found the old abandoned house and moved in. Lived there for years. No electricity. No plumbing. House was built in the late 1800s. He then went about fixing it up. The owner eventually found out and drove out to investigate. He did such a great job with the place that the old couple gave him the house and land it stood on. He only paid a couple hundred bucks a year for the taxes. Last time I heard, he still lives there.

I would be careful about one thing. Storage buildings have a lock-placement on the outside. If you are sleeping in there and someone puts something in the hole where the lock would go. It could be years before someone found your skeleton. If you pick a location like this, be sure you have an axe with you so you can hack your way out if you get locked in.

so could others. if someone saw a lock on the door, they could just kick the walls out to see whats in that unit. also this place wouldn't be a good idea, due to not being able to make a fire inside. the smoke would kill you. there were fresh tire tracks on that road that he was walking on, so someone is driving around back there.

There is an open lot behind the shop where I work. We've had trouble with people going out there and leaving a complete disaster area for us to clean up. One day the property owner introduced me to a homeless guy who lived in his pickup. He said this is Jason he will be keeping an eye on the back lot. He is the only one allowed to live out there. That was about 8 years ago. Jason is still out there, and the police even ask him if he saw anybody run through the place. He has became well accepted.

Man this is such a simple solution. Put your trust in some decent homeless people and give them something in return and they will keep your area safe, half the homeless situation in this country can be taken care of that way not counting People who are completely wigged out or have severe psychiatric issues, which you can find out pretty quick. But people with the ability to help the homeless and give them at least a private area where they are not harassed, those people in general hold too much disdain for people who aren't working full time for whatever reason.. even though many are not able to. @@jamesstine9808

No judgment. Take a seasoned international squatters advice, go into the woods. You may not believe this, but places have energy, and most of these deserted place reek of bad if you can feel it. This is no place to be. Pour rain and you have a bad tent, go for it after you pray. I've done this and survived. Go to the woods Joe. Yeah. We are trained to love buildings for safety and association. This is not that place. Get a earth tone tent and find a hidden spot. With practice you will learn stealth. Evil is drawn to these rotting structures, along with drugs, rats, and disease, and desperate souls. Please listen Joe. I have slept in literally hundreds of places. I prayed all the time to be safe. God is listening. You are not safe in the skeletal abandoned structures of man. Much love to you Joe. I write because my heart is with you..

So true. A big part of survival that never seems to get discussed is developing a sense of the spirits of a place. I'd be more interested in the woods at the back if I needed to camp in that area.

I lived in a functioning storage unit a few times: Seattle, Santa Monica, Sacramento....There's so much free stuff in city areas, you can often find a bed & everything you need right at the storage dumpsters. I found brand new sleeping bags, sofas, lanterns etc. People throw everything away. Figured out how to lock units from the inside, leave a lock on the outside...Never got caught. Some places have outlets in the halls. Sometimes I had to get a 2nd unit to store all the free stuff I could sell on CL. Also camped in the woods for years, which is nicer but less secure...Hard to find outdoor spots that aren't overrun w/junkies.

I did the exact same thing you did in my storage unit I was renting. Locked it from inside using a string attached to JB Weld to the round cylinder lock. I would have a little small magnet attached to the end of the string that was attached to the cylinder lock with the JB WELD at the other end. I would place the little magnet right next to the hole where the cylinder lock goes into the sliding door. I would go inside my storage and close the door down. Then feel with my fingers that little magnet just outside next to the hole. It was small enough to be pulled through the hole. Once I pulled the magnet through the hole with the string attached to it. I pulled the string all the way through until the dummy cylinder lock was pulled through in the hole that it was meant to fit in. Once the lock was in place, I could slide the locking mechanism closed from the inside of my storage. From the outside the door looked like any other storage door with a cylinder lock in place. No one would ever have a clue, plus I was secure inside. I had a electrical quick water pot from Wallyworld that heated my 1 quart of water that I then mixed with a 1 gallon jug of water to make a perfect ratio of warm water to pour over myself standing in a big Rubbermaid tub to take my showers in. It didn't take but a few times to get it down to a science. I had another Rubbermaid tub with a sealed lid to keep my folded clean clothes in. And a big heavy-duty garbage bag for my dirty clothes for when I needed to go to the laundry mart. I didn't sleep in there, because continuous patterns is how you get busted and found out eventually. I slept in my car, but because I kept everything in my storage unit and showered in it at night after hours. My car didn't look any different than any other car would. I had 24 hour access to my storage unit, because I became good friends with the manager at the time I started renting. I was from that time forward, after the manager moved on, new management took over. I was grandfathered in with my agreement. I always paid my rent on time. I considered it very inexpensive rent. I had electrical socket inside my unit that I grabbed from 110 wires that just happened to run through my unit on the ceiling wall. I never got lackadaisical and careless with my procedures. I lived in this type of situation for quite a few years. My single lifestyle wasn't burdened by this way of life. It was way cheaper than renting a studio apartment. It kept me on my toes and my mind sharp, as to how to survive if things got bad. I chose to live like this for those years. Always did my storage duties before or after hours. So management never witnessed my patterns. I think near the end before I chose to move out and move from that state entirely. I think management had their suspicions but they really couldn't prove anything, so they never approached me. I think this one nosey manager was on to me the last couple of months. But he couldn't prove anything. He kept what we both knew to himself. It was time anyway for me to move forward from that season in my life.

I currently stash up in a tent in some quiet woods that belong to the railways. I Own a Ford transit high roof, I'm doing it up slowly but I can use it every day for getting to work etc. The best thing to do is build up a platform of the ground. Use underneath for storage. Ideally, try and tuck yourself into the landscape as best you can or in the middle of some shrubbery or even a tree house. The idea is, if you're invisible, you stand a better chance of enjoying relative seclusion and privacy. Stash cooking stove and utensils don't leave anything valuable lying around. I'm stashed really well in some spruce trees that provide excellent coverage and natural shelter from the elements. There is a rail track quite near and some residential streets on the other side of the tracks. It's great to hear the trains passing and in the morning the birds are singing. I go to work ride a bike go to the Gym train take a shower and have a sauna. This way I'm hoping to clear my debts and start to save some money. Common sense and Stealth is the way to go and keep your location a secret. Getting hold if any military webbing and tarps is also really useful. Don't ever call yourself homeless, that is a stupid phrase, keep yourself clean, eat well, go to work a clean dry shelter is good a home, consider the challenge a positive thing in taking pride in your abilities and gain confidence in learning to provide shelter and safety. In summertime it's fantastic keep some binoculars with you if anyone Susses you out you're a birdwatcher . Stay clear of any one who will blow your cover or get you robbed.

We had a local kid who aged out of foster care and had no place to go and was camping in a local community park. The community found out about him right before our big freeze and pulled together to get him into a hotel. After the freeze, the community found him a job and helped him into an affordable rental situation. Just a kid in an unfortunate circumstance not of his own making. As far as I know he is still doing well. I’m proud of my little community for pulling together to help someone in a substantial short and long-term way.

I see hills all around, so there has to be a cave or rock shelter w/ spring water & you could pile up rocks to have a fire.... If you keep it stealth & don't trash it up, you won't draw attention & you''l be left along.. Simple snares are easy to make for squirrels, rabbits, & even a small deer... I was homeless once and now I'm drawn to survival channels because of it.. Whenever you're in public domain, the police are called even by the so called nice people.... Get a "want add" & look for jobs - I did & my first good job was a tree climber at 19 for $.85 an hour & I rented a very small trailer for $50 a month from the tree company., I've been living on my own since I was 17.. Now I'm 66 & no body ever gave me anything, I earned every penny I have by the Grace of God..

When I was a kid I made a plan for if I had to run away (parents were always fighting and I was prepared in case it ever became an abusive situation) In the town near us there was a store that had carpet and furniture for sale but you could walk up three flights of stairs to look at an entire floor of beds and mattresses. The office was way at the back and it took a long time for them to usually realize someone was in the store. I scoped it out for years and knew they didn't have alarms or cameras except for the door alarms. I figured I would get up to that floor while customers were drifting around and hide until after closing time and then sleep comfortably on a nice mattress and then slip out the same way the next day. But that was just the first night of the plan. Day 2 would be getting out of town to another place that I had figured out. I wasn't going to hitchhike til I was clear and could change my appearance. I looked much older than I was and I feel like I probably would have succeeded because I had thought it through and the risks and everything pretty thoroughly for years. I never needed to put it to practice thankfully but I even had a bag with hair dye and supplies stashed in a safe place I could get to.

Experience makes a solid teacher. Places like this may be good to duck into to get out of the daytime rain for awhile but otherwise only two strategies work- one is homeless camps aka tent cities and the other is going solo stealth. Lots of good urban places to live and to stash some belongings in but none are going to be this obvious or this easy. I'm not giving my secrets away but if you're going urban stealth the only good places are the ones nobody thinks about; you have to get out of the "living in a building" mindset or you'll lose everything you've got- maybe even your life.

Axe noise gets you found, people get shot dead if seen holding a BB pistol, and WW1 and WW2 both proved a short shovel is an excellent self- defense tool. As did I in my war. Dug shelters like mine survived 122 mm Chinese rockets and hostile irregulars. Better insulation than tent fabric and hides candle use at night. If you look dirty but hold a shovel you appear to be a day laborer and not a vagrant. I use a hand saw with scabbard to quietly do my dead wood and root cuts. Not as a weapon.

abandoned buildings work, but use the roof , where nobody and no dogs are going to bother you. A hammock is always best, everywhere, but sometimes there's nothing from which to hang one. Make note of the buildings that ARE hammock compatible. Hammock get you up out of the bird poop and rodents wont be running over your face or gnawing holes in your sleeping gear. Sheets of VisiKleen plastic, 9x12 are just $2 each. One vs bird poop if you have to lay on the ground, one vs rain on top of you. keep each one in its own separate bag.

An abandoned storage facility, within walking distance to the town where you get your disability check would be perfect. One unit could be equipped with a cot or air mattress. When inside, roll the door down, and put a stick, nail or wire in the tracks. Anyone outside trying to open it will think it's rusted shut. When you leave...hide your most vital supplies in the woods in more than one cache. The unit with the cot/mattress, you put a padlock on. This would prevent anyone else from taking over your area, and possibly even keeping the cops or rightful owner from discovering that you are squatting there.

Rather than the lockable cold storage box at ground level where you could be ambushed/pinned in, or locked in, if I was desparate, I would have chosen to break into the better-insulated brown brick house on the left with the hill behind it, then set myself up on the warmer second level where I would have a good elevated view out the window and a fast escape route if needed, providing the place was actually abandoned. Also a safer way to store your stuff, and avoid theft, would be to take the plastic blue barrel with a tight fitting lid and bury it up to it's collar in the nearby woods, then use debris to cover the lid, snapping a few nearby branches in it's direction so you don't lose the spot. At the end of the day, I'd much prefer to invest in lightweight hiking/camping gear i.e. backpack, small tent, lightweight tarp, sleeping bag, basic cooking equipment, knife, water filter and bottle etc. and just find safe spots in the woods or urban parks at night etc. to free camp, even if you have to husstle a little collecting and selling some stuff to raise the cash needed. Much safer and more comfortable than trying to use existing structures where you are more likely to get into trouble. Stay safe Joe.

This is def a convenient shelter against the elements, but def not recommended for staying save. Close to town and very accessible, which means other homeless people might know about this too.....and some of those might be harmful. I am not homeless, but I am a prepper......I have my bag ready and I scouted my place to stay. Its outside the city limits, easy reach ( by public transport ) but still secluded and most important no human dwellings around for miles. It has water, firewood and its clean.....right in the middle of the local woodlands. I live in Berlin, Germany, so finding this place was even more a challenge!

My state law verified being homeless with a tent is not a crime if camped on public-use property. Like, urban grass as directed by City Hall. Yes, you have to walk in and ask for camp directions. City Fathers provide faucet use, free toilets, and more if you're polite and not a fool. Las Vegas has most of their homeless within concrete tunnels under the city.

Get the fuel filter for it though, costs about $7, also 4-6' hose, then just set that bad boy in your cave. Get the Indoor version, probably still want to vent a little in case of carbon monoxide, but I hear the Indoor buddy is safe with safeguards on it. Do some research. I would have pallet wood lining the cave walls, lol. Can be done, and with a little time in a nice hidden area you could live free, then just clean up find part time job 3 days a week, save save save, lol.

1. Never reveal your spots, when being homeless. This is a quick way to get busted, and to draw a lot of attention. 2. Don't store your stuff at your spots. Store it somewhere else. Ideally, a storage unit. 3. Don't be at your spot, during non sleeping hours. Those hours are 10PM-5AM.
