In today's video we're discussing the search for style in photography. What is style? Why should we or should we not strive for a style and how can it be achieved?

As a 74 year old man who has taken many photographs professionally and as a hobbyist since 1962, I am awestruck with your talent and insight into the artist's psyche. Well done, I'm glad The Photographic Eye informed me of your channel.

Interesting topic indeed. It’s really hard for me to describe a specific style that I’m attracted to, but it’s very easy to identify it when I see it. I’ve been struggling with the whole identity/style thing for a long time with my own photography, so this really gave me some things to think about!

Ohh great, glad I could give you some thoughts. I see, well it's always a difficult thing in creative journeys I think... but I guess we should all keep trying not to overthink it too much :D

Can't disagree with your thoughts on finding style wether it is in photography or arts in general. Sean Tucker and many other photographers/artists come to that same conclusion "you do not find your style, it finds you" through your journey and by finding yourself, what is it you truly like to shoot. Great video as always !

This is an awesome conversation piece! I was at an event of local creatives when someone I don't know that well told me he has recognized my work around town without having to read the label to see that it's mine. What I like is this happened organically. I wasn't trying for any specific style when I started sharing my work. I appreciate artists who stick with consistency because it sets them apart
@teocrawford
@teocrawford 2 жыл бұрын
Ohh wow that's wonderful, must've been such a good feeling👏🏼🤗 Yes, that organic process is essential I think, because a forced style might not really be a style true to you🤔

I just recently got into photography and I agree with you when you say that is style that finds you. I find myself shooting anything that sparks an interest in me without really thinking of what it is and why am I shooting it, because I know that in the long run I will figure all of that out. Also great video as always!

Very good topic to cover Teo! I think it doesn’t do any good to worry about what your style is because as you make more photos/videos/paintings or whatever it is you do, you begin to reveal more and more of what your style actually is without consciously trying to
@teocrawford

Yes! The unconscious aspect might be more important actually than I made it seem🤔 But yeah, worrying will not go far🤷🏻‍♂️ (easier said than done though haha)

Finding you own style is just finding your inner why. If you know yourself and your "why" then every shutter press counts and you move in the right direction in your photographic journey. Very nice video. 🙏 for sharing your thoughts. Cheers.

This is inspiring. I arrived here by way of Alex at The Photographic Eye. Perhaps I can add that I personally enjoy exploring many styles and developing them concurrently over many years. When taking, and later processing, images, I like being able to choose among an array of styles that I have, well, discovered really, over time. I can't imagine limiting myself to one style; I'd get bored and I'd begin to feel that I was working rather than playing. And to me it is the spirit of playfulness, inextricably linked to creativity, that is at the heart of my delight in photography. The other thing that comes to mind is how excited I get when I see what others are doing, as in the wonderful examples you bring to this video. The human imagination is perhaps our best quality, and seeing these brilliant new ways of creating art, and generating feelings, with a camera is simply exhilarating. Many thanks for this thoughtful piece. It has inspired me to move into new ways of making images.

Interesting concept Teo. I was faced with determining my own style when confronted with a question during an online photo interview. After selecting and reviewing a number of my favorite works I did indeed see common themes that I had been attracted to, which feeds into your own explanation. We all experiment and may have a number of 'successful' images (ie, ones that others acclaim), but I believe it is those that we most enjoy ourselves that reveal our personal style.

Quite the interesting take. I think you're making a lot of sense. In essence, a personal style is just the mental shortcuts we develop through practice. And, of course! imagine having to take every single photo from scratch!

Thanks for another lovely video. Happy to see among your four artist examples of style the inclusion of Alex Stoddard. He’s been a favorite of mine for about 10 years now. And thanks for the introduction to Ziqian Liu’s work. In a previous life I used to be a retail visual merchandiser and her editorial result reminds me of a marriage of that skill with graphic design. ✌🏻🖤

Just found your channel thanks to the photographic eye by Alex Kilbee, love your videos! On this one, I wanted to share some thoughts: It does make a lot of sense to me, that the style will find the artist becaus he keeps coming back to the things he/she likes. And it is somewhat relieving as it takes some struggles with the search of something unique away, as the premise is: just shoot it, if you like it. Although I thought, this perspective might be encouraging to just stay in the comfort zone without trying out new stuff. So I wonder, how does always looking for challenges and new possibilities fits into the whole style-developing thing.
@teocrawford
@teocrawford 2 жыл бұрын
Ohh cool thanks for coming by, that was so sweet by Alex! Ahh very good point, thank you for sharing your thoughts :) I also think it's important to regularly keep exploring new paths in photography. I see what you mean, that this can unintentionally lead to a halt, however that assumes that it's only the subject that you keep coming back to. However what I was trying to bring across is that there are many aspects in photography that the artist ends up repeating. An example: A landscape photographer decides to step out of the comfort zone and shoot portraits. The photographer can still apply preferences in composition, colour or lighting on this vastly different subject matter. The style one evolves is not just the subject matter, but all aspects of photography. Maybe I should have made clear that this must not be taken as an excuse to stay in one's comfort zone. Does this clarify my thought for you?

I have a question… I really like the conclusion of this video, but how can we “escape” trends we see online that subconsciously or not influence us in creating photos, designs or other forms of art? Whenever I create something, it seems like it’s influenced by something I’ve already seen… and it doesn’t seem that unique
I did this for 30 days and it improved my photography.
