Hunted Colorado (my home state) since I could legally start hunting in "79". I think this might be my last year, not that I expect anyone to care. Too many people, Its just crazy anymore. Colorado Parks and Wildlife have allowed this state to be over run, especially archery. In my opinion when money is allowed to dictate policy everyone loses. Maybe I'll take up needle point.;)

Thanks for sharing this information Corey. My youngest bro who is in the Army and serving overseas won't be back until late May so he will miss the deadline, but he is thinking hard about OTC tags in either Colorado or Idaho. So this will help him and possibly me as well since I do want to go with him, even if it is just for the experience if I can't afford the tag since I sadly work at Walmart on the sales associate level. It is nice to see that there are some decent quality units for OTC or people with 0-2 points. Just sucks to have to spent $100 to get a preference point. :/ One of these years hopefully soon. Thanks again for doing some step by step for us. Good luck this year in whatever states you draw in.

Good info Corey! Just an FYI for Colorado residents applying for elk, deer, or pronghorn. The “most points wins” rule doesn’t apply for some of the trophy units where the hybrid draw sets aside 20% of the tags for a random draw. See page 9 of your 2019 big game brochure.

I live and hunt in Colorado and I must say that it is alarming and straight up dangerous with the amount of hunters in the woods. I hike 5+ miles into back country from trail or road and am still crossing paths with several hunters no matter how far back I go. 80% are non resident. So discouraging and worries me for the future hunts

Great post Cory, as a Non-Resident(England, UK), I am gutted at the new processes and charges, I had planned on gaining more points for limited draw Units, but due to process, charges and limited funds available, it looks like I'll be sticking to OTC Units and hope for the best. I've watched enough of your video's to know how to hunt and where to look, it's just a short while before the stars line up and I get my first Elk. I've learnt a lot on my 6 previous trips and patterned Elk travel in certain area's, fingers crossed for Elk Camp 2020.

@tristanmack5779
@tristanmack5779 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Building points is great if you want to hunt trophy animals with minimal pressure from other people. But if you're willing to strap up the boot laces and get away from roads and people, there's still lots of good over the counter hunts in almost all western states. You just gotta work a lot harder than you do on a premium tag and expect that buck or bull to be a few less inches than a premium tag. If you want to build points for a certain species and area then I would say go for it, but like Corey states, point creep is real so I wouldn't expect to ever draw it unless it's still a lowish amount of points to draw it. Anything that takes 20+ points to draw will probably never happen with point creep depending on how their state draw system works. Really just depends on state, species, and their draw/point system.

I've hunted Colorado tags are expensive for non-residents. that being said I found a DIY hunt on state and public land very easy to find empty areas to hunt, you just have to get away from the road for elk. The flat top wilderness area is a good place to start for newbies. It has high and lower elevations for you to hunt, with second season in my experience being the best bang for you buck. You will see elk and muledeer if, you can get away from the roads and hunters. I buy a cow, bear, deer and a bull tag, then spend 10 days hunting hard. I have filled my cow, deer and bear in that time before. I get my deer 90% of the time, I get a bull about 30% a cow 60% of the time, a bear once, but I always see some. I rent horses and get high and far back off the roads. I dont do it for the success of the hunt, I do it to enjoy Colorado and my 10 days with out a phone and PC....... I have guys that go for just the cow tags, they do very well in second season. Also you had better be in shape it's brutal on your lungs legs and ego.... come on October already !!!

This is my first year in 2020. I drew a tag for GMU 14 as a resident. I wasn't expecting to draw for that GMU and was just intending to build preference points. Seems like a nice unit. Why did I draw successfully?
@bighornsheep09
@bighornsheep09 5 жыл бұрын
I had 15 Moose points going into this year's draw (CO) but didn't draw. A gentleman with 10 points drew the tag. Those with the most aren't guaranteed anything anymore. Point creep keeps increasing but yet many times those with fewer points draw. The system is broken and needs to be fixed. I have accrued points for years now but don't know if I will ever draw a Colorado Moose tag. Every year we hear of hunters drawing the tag on the 4th year which completely nullifies the premises that those with the most draw.
@Elk101
@Elk101 5 жыл бұрын
bighornsheep09, moose and elk tags are completely different in Colorado. Elk tags are awarded based on preference, and those with the most points do draw. Moose tags use a weighted preference point system, where it is possible for those with fewer "weighted" points to draw - moose preference points are capped at 3 points, and then weighted from there.

Not completely true Corey on the person with the most preference points draws the tag in Colorado. Colorado works on a mathematical equation which takes your preference points and places your name in the hat more times for a better chance of drawing. The Colorado process is very flawed and you consistently see people drawing tags with less points than what is being stated as required!
@Elk101
@Elk101 5 жыл бұрын
Todd, I don't think your information is accurate for Colorado elk. Colorado uses a strictly-preference system, and truly awards licenses in the draw based 100% on preference - meaning those with the highest level of points are awarded the licenses first. If there are licenses leftover after EVERYONE at the highest point level for that hunt has been issued a license, they move down to the next point level only, and so on until all licenses are awarded. The only time there is a random draw is if there are more applicants at the highest point level than there are licenses remaining. Then those applicants who hold the highest point level are randomly selected for the licenses. However, according to the statistics, there are no licenses awarded to lower point applicants for elk in Colorado - only those with the highest level of points. If you have an example you can share to illustrate otherwise, we would definitely be interested in seeing it. Thanks!
@toddslade626
@toddslade626 5 жыл бұрын
@@Elk101 HOW DOES THE LIMITED LICENSE DRAW WORK? Some limited license hunts are very popular and require a minimum number of accumulated preference points to be eligible for a specific hunt. If you have accumulated the minimum number of preference points to be eligible for the hunt, your application is given a six-digit randomized number and placed in the pool of eligible applicants. The lower your randomized number in the draw the better chance you have getting drawn. Unfortunately just because you have the max number of preference points it is not a guarantee you will get a license. As a resident of Colorado I see it every year where people with the max points do not draw the tag, especially in the north west units where the point creep is making the process unattainable for most people in there lifetime. In the limited units there are only a set amount of licenses and some are getting so many applicants, that getting enough preference points to get into the pool as stated above is tough! The pools are now so big in some units that getting a license at 100% is not accurate. You guys are awesome, keep up the good work.
@toddslade626
@toddslade626 5 жыл бұрын
A good example also would be the fact that there are 100 licenses available in a unit. It takes 14 points to draw that tag. There are 10 people who put in with more than 14 points and they are guaranteed 100% draw. This leaves 90 tags, and you have 200 applicants with 14 points now in the pool for the 90 tags. There 110 people that will not draw. I should have said this at the beginning, sorry!

With all due respect, I wish you and the other hunting channels would stop with the "get out there and hunt Colorado" mantra. As a Colorado resident, I can tell you first hand, we don't need people shouting from the rooftops to go hunt Colorado. Colorado is already the fastest growing state, with people moving here from all over the country. The woods are starting to resemble a stirred up ant hill. I notice you don't have a "go hunt Idaho" video. I love your videos, but admit it, how would you like it if you pulled up to a once secret spot in your neck of the woods, only to find 20 trucks with out-of-state plates?

Colorado is the 7th fastest growing state. If you think you have some hunters per square mile, head up to WA. We're growing faster than CO and have a tiny fraction of the animals. ID, UT and AZ are other western elk states growing faster than CO. I get what you are saying, but the future of the sport requires more people getting involved so there is significant dichotomy there.

Unless of course you get lucky. I shot more Elk in Arizona with less opportunity, Everyone says " Colorado has more Elk than any state in the country". What they don't tell you is that we probably have more habitat than any state. So where do the Elk go when the pressure comes? Any where they want. And where you would rather not be ( unless you have the time ) Also they don't mention all the private land the Elk hang out on during hunting season. As you know they have it figured out.
