Another easy way is to divide the gross amount by (100%+VAT%)and multiply it by VAT%; $60 / 120% X 20% = $10

The reason you divide by 6 is because you multiply by 20/120 which is 1/6 which is same as dividing by 6. The reason you divide by 120 is because you want to find one percent of original vat exclusive amount.
