The new iPad Pro Magic Keyboard case makes the iPad into a laptop. And it's NOT the apocalypse... very confusing. But does a keyboard + trackpad mean you should get this instead of a "real" laptop?

I think I understand Linus' confusion because when I got my iPad pro with keyboard from work it frustrated me in the sense that I wanted to use it as a laptop, but I found that I couldn't leave my work laptop at home. Tablets in general have this weird spot where it's not quite a phone and not quite a laptop. But now that I've found a place to incorporate my iPad into my work I couldn't do without it. I use it a lot, both professionally and privately.

I had a 10th gen iPad kzfaq.infoUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.

Nailed this review. I have the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard and have found myself constantly flipping open the case just to use it for a few minutes at a time. This has become my go to device for media consumption, and I look forward to using it when I head back to school as a software dev. It seems like the perfect intermediate device, being great at what I want to do often and quickly, but will still be set aside for when I’m gaming or programming (Although hearing you can dev on this might change my mind.) Oddly enough, I found that I enjoy taking hand written notes on this, and typing is actually super comfortable, even more so than my mechanical keyboard. This device is just so fluid, in the way the UI works, to how it gets used in my daily life.

I still have a 9.7” iPad Pro, and I’ve been eyeballing all this new iPad Pro stuff. I really like your unbiased reviews. I hope Apple is pushing to make iPad OS even more it’s “own thing” because the trappings of iOS are limiting its potential. It has the power, but Apple needs to decide whether they want to have it be different for different’s sake, or create a true tablet / laptop style experience that’s cohesive.

I started my KZfaq channel with my iPad Pro 2018, I film everything with the ipad, use its mics, then edit the footage with lumafusion and make the thumbnails on the iPad. its not perfect, I want to get a camera, but until I can afford all the other gear, the iPad allows me to actually create things, and I love it. I honestly think its one of the best tools than a creator trying to get a start could have. it sounds kinda crazy but if I could get a bigger iPad like a 14" 15" I totally would, when video editing you always need more screen real estate. great review!!

Honestly, I got hooked on the iPad Pro 1st gen while in college. Nothing beat it for taking notes w/the pencil. The ability to type things up when I needed to (I type faster than I write) and hand write notes (Organic Chem, Math, Chem Eng shit) was amazing. I went from hardly taking any notes in various notebooks to having hundreds of notes and HW assignments per semester. To be fair I still lugged around a laptop everyday for things like MATLAB and research stuff. And yes, I did regret getting the 6.8lb 17” Razer blade pro w/gtx 1080.

iPads were from the beginning versatile. I used my (3G) iPad for webbrowsing on the go, playing games, as others explained as a 2nd device for like playing music over Airplay while doing the real work on my Notebook/MacBook Pro or drawing, as much drawing was possible on a 2nd gen iPad without sensitivity sensors. What was also an awesome function from iPads these days was the capability of connecting a SD card or USB stick with adapters to it... I used the iPad wherever i needed it to copy the movies/photos from SD card so i got free space again. Something also possible with a Mac, but hey the iPad was smaller and fitted into the photobag, the Mac didnt. And the other reason i used it very often, like everytime i was driving away with my car, i built a "docking station" into my car with only a regular radio system, so literally built in a nice entertainment system to watch movies or while driving to play music with iTunes always opened. When meeting friends, i could easily detatch the iPad from the "dock" and we could play games together on it. Something a iPad was also some kind of best option these days with no AC power supply. Nice entertainment systems in cars were literally only in very expensive luxury cars or very very expensive to get as upgrade. Plus the iPad got a MUCH better screen than any display in a car, probably also the biggest one. Since this iPad was for me a device for nearly every regular task (except real work or if only as a 2nd device to work on simultaniously) in combination with special usage like the entertainment system in car, i would even say the top model of the iPad 2 i got these days was worth every penny of the around 750$ i paid. But still, i think the actual iPads are overpriced af... i mean the range of iPad 2 were from like 290$ to like 750$, meanwhile the cheapest iPad cost already as much or more than the most expensive iPad a decade ago. If apple ever make an iPad with a full usable Mac OS and something like the tablet mode from windows 10, i would instantly replace my MacBook Pro with an iPad. Sadly, i dont see this happening ever.

I just sold my 2019 MacBook Bro for the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard set up and its amazing. I can go from working on project drafts with my pencil, taking notes and cresting mockups. Switch up with my Keyboard and draft captions in my notes, edit content and upload them to all my social media platforms, all on the same device. It’s the sort of flexibility and simplicity you just don’t get with a Mac or a Laptop.

Aaron Goodchild It works pretty well, you can remap basic functions to it (you can have upto 5 programmed buttons) like home, app switcher, show dock, etc. but it comes at the cost of having to leave accessibility touch on as remapping is an ‘accessibility’ feature. You may have to get used to a couple things though, one of them being the ‘adaptive cursor’ or whatever Apple calles it. It basically means it takes shape to whatever the cursor is hovering on, it would regularly be a circle (annoyingly), but once you hover on something clickable on a supported app, the cursor takes shape around the button. On some apps it works really well because those apps are meant for a mouse. But on all other apps a mouse just emulates a finger press (by default). If you want to try an app that works really well with mouse (and keyboard), use Safari. If you plan on using your iPad with a mouse but without a keyboard be aware that on my Logitech MX master 2 (I doubt that changes anything) there’s an issue where when I click on a text field the software keyboard does not pop up until I turn off or disconnect my mouse. So whenever you use your mouse with your iPad always have a keyboard with you (if this is a widespread issue). This drove me to buy a magic keyboard so that the issue would be less annoying. Using a keyboard and a mouse feels mostly natural when web browsing and checking through emails and word processing but for other mobile only apps that are meant for a touch screen it feels weird. All of your regular keyboard shortcuts work (command c, command v, command z, etc.) and to see what shortcuts are available on each app you can just hold down the command/windows button (shortcuts only show up if the app is supported and all the modifying keys are remappable). One more thing (classic Apple fashion), if you do use a keyboard the first thing you need to do is disable auto correct. Sorry for the long reply, but I hope this helps. All remaps and customizability (yes, you can costumize your cursor) have to be done within settings.

Just got my 12.9” Magic Keyboard a couple of days ago. It’s a great piece of kit and the keyboard is superb. Got mine as a business expense - wouldn’t buy it with my own money unless it’s intended to be my only device (not in my case). I totally agree with the review - it allows you to use the iPad as an ‘almost’ laptop with touch/pencil capability. However it still can’t totally replace my Windows laptop (wish it could!) as I can’t use some of the software I need on iPad OS and where I can it isn’t as efficient yet. This is partly down to the operating system and partly down to the hardware keyboard - it’s great for typing but missing function keys etc. Just makes it awkward for some uses. However for quite a lot of users this may be all they need - it’s definitely a big step towards a true hybrid device but I still think it will be 2 or 3 more iterations before I can ditch my Windows laptop.

As a designer the iPad Pro is a great addition to my workflow, but not a replacement for a laptop. I see it more as a great way to optimize the early stages of the process, i.e research, sketching, color combinations etc. its also a great device to do smaller presentation for one on one meetings with clients. The screen looks great and I find it easier for clients to touch the screen to scroll around on a website, or a PDF then using a trackpad. With the Apple Pencil, I've been able to make final designs that goes for a "hand-drawn" look, skipping the tedious work of vectorizing things drawn of paper.

Just to add to all the features of the ipad: i am very pleased with it, the only thing no one thought about jet ist that it is impossible to look at two different excel, PowerPoint or word files at the same time and using the depending apps for the files. Little but sometimes annoying downgrade.

I enjoy the Magic Keyboard with my big M1 powered iPad Pro; however, it would be excellent if Apple would give an update to allow for disabling the trackpad while typing. Other than that, it’s awesome. As a writer, I often hit the trackpad while typing, and this throws typing off track. Please Apple gives us the ability to disable the track pad while typing. There’s just no reason for it to be enabled at the same time a person is typing.

Sure you can remote to cloud to do it(I tried it with blink) or go to website to do it but both were clunky way especially when it came to big projects. So no it not for someone who plans to use it as their main “computer” for programming

Makes total sense right? In general touch is a lot less efficient, but 'in general' doesn't mean 'always'. When I used to have a touch screen laptop I would only touch the screen around... 10 to 20 times per workday compared to the thousands of times I would use the touchpad... but those 10 to 20 times per workday were nice and saved me effort (explanation for those who can't imagine that: when you're typing something you will often lose track of where the cursor is, so 'finding it' often starts which a quick shaking movement before clicking what you want to click. With a touchscreen you get to skip this extra step, but have to pay with a greater physical movement of your hand (not too bad on small laptops). Or alternatively you are watching a video and want to select something from the recommended videos in which case you have to move your hands anyway).

My MacBooks are aging out and I was in the market to decide what I wanted to get next, especially in light of my mobile needs. With the announcement of a two year transition to Apple Silicon, a pretty good deal from AT&T, and streamlining my daily carry devices, I went with 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 and the Magic Keyboard. So far, so good. Hey guys! I’m the proud owner of a iPad Pro for almost a year now. I have a few questions for you smarter people out there! Ive been using a laptop for school for most of my schooling career as well as just standard desktops. Ive had my own personal laptop for around 8 years obviously changing laptops overtime. Ive never had a cheap laptop but never best of the best per say. So my question is as follows: what exactly cant i do with a iPad Pro that i can do with the laptop? Considering that i have all the proper attachments for my iPad such as magic keyboard and external hard rivers etc. i have not came across an issue with my iPad yet that i just absolutely needed to use a computer... other than typing long essays and things before i had a keyboard for my iPad... i can take notes as well with significant more ease and perfection to harness the way i want to learn with this iPad as opposed to mindless typing on my old laptop i am now engaged on a much higher level.

Quite a few things in my world, but not necessarily traditional things the majority of the world cares about. I'm a technologist, software developer, musician, gamer. I enjoy being able to record, mix, master music.... Play competitive fps games.... Spin up virtual machines and containers to build out programming environments... And I dabble with visual effects design in after effects and Photoshop. Every thing in this realm on a tablet is a heavily downgraded (and mostly non-existent) experience. However, that's totally not the things this is marketed towards nor designed for. I think the iPad pro is a great tool for a variety of things, however the price point seems a little steep when you compare what you can do with a laptop spec'd out for the same price. I think the difference here is workflow. If I were a business executive or an entrepreneur for a company though, this is 100% what I'd use

It's just easier to plop a tablet on my lap after an exhausting day at work. While you can get a light laptop the iPad works best because I can do so many things on it like draw take notes or watch a show. Also, I already have an iPhone so it just makes sense to have an iPad so I can use air drop and handoff as opposed to getting a microsoft surface.

The only big things to say is a downside is that the iPad pros are expensive and I don’t see them lasting as long as MacBook do In the long run. Just some thoughts. Love your videos.

Actually that’s probably because it’s actually an OLED model. OLED devices actually make screensaver content like logos or clocks switch locations every minute or so to actually prevent OLED burn-in. It’s actually a pretty normal thing.

@@zero64 Sure, but it didnt just change location, it changed size. We all know what happened, it was connected to an external display with a different scaling ratio, and it bugged out because it applied the same scaling ratio to a display with a higher pixel density. It bugged out.

I’m watching this on the latest gen iPad Pro and i gotta say, it is weird but it is also really cool especially because I have an iPhone and they work together great. I feel like Macs and iPhones work good together but they are so different and the iPad is kind of the half step between computer and phone. Its the essence of a laptop

it's mostly useful for Office users like sales persons, who can edit documents, create ppt charts for business and dont have to carry laptops. creative designers etc. whose interactive with touch screen more and less with keyboards. And the best part is you can still watch movies play games lying down holding with a hand on a big screen. All in one. unless you need 8 docker images and kubernetes to run for everyday work errands.

@Iqbal Muhammad lol, yes. My first thought when I saw the new iPads last year was that this plus foldables is a perfect storm for them to recreate Steve Jobs legendary iPhone announcement. "Today we're announcing a new smartphone, a new tablet, and a new desktop computer. And it's in my pocket." That's my full prediction lol

Yeah I love my iPad Pro, it’s my main college machine. The keyboard improved my essay typing soooo much it’s awesome Edit October 2022: I still have my 12.9” iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard working like a champ. I also purchased a MacBook Air a little over a year ago. I continue to use my iPad as my main college device as its OS suits my uses and needs more. I use my MacBook for the times my iPad can’t do something, but it’s rare

Different approaches: Surface is taking a laptop and turning it into a tablet, iPad is taking a tablet and turning it into a laptop. They will eventually meet in the middle and one of them might become a decent new category of device eventually

I have owned several iterations of the iPad over the years although I am a Windows user. The primary reason for owning one? Travel and my ability to watch video content when sitting on a plane, train or bus. So, with my previous iPad in serious need of an upgrade due to dwindling storage space (iPad Air 2 with only 16 GB)...it was time to upgrade. I am someone who will spare no expense (well...as far as my bank account allows) for the best picture quality I can get when watching a movie which is why I own two 65" LG OLED TVs. Obviously I can't bring them on a plane with me even if I try to register it as my 'Therapy TV'. I was going to the 11" iPad Pro thinking the only difference was the screen size. But then I read several reviews and found out the 12.9" 2021 iPad Pro has a much better screen and some say, on par, with OLED when it comes to HDR video content. With non-HDR content the difference isn't as much since Apple has decided to hinder the 12.9"s brightness for everything else not HDR. I am also a videographer and photographer and no...I do not see myself flying off to my next assignment thinking my M1 chip equipped 12.9" iPad is gonna replace my traveling Windows Alienware laptop. Yes...I paid way more than I needed but again...picture quality while watching movies is number one for me and I'm sure Apple is well aware of customers like me which is why they didn't use the same screen in any other version of the iPad pro.

This was genuinely entertaining to watch! It’s funny to see PC people scratching their heads at this thing in genuine confusion, as it’s clearly good quality but the ‘why’ of it is such a mystery. I have an iPad Pro for illustration and basic video editing. I considered getting the Magic Keyboard recently to replace an ageing laptop, but ended up playing it safe and getting a MacBook Air instead, as a) the file system makes it easier to find stuff while teaching and b) I like to keep my teaching device and my freelance device separate. Also, there’s an app I rely on as a music teacher which I need a PC or Mac for. THAT SAID, if I wasn’t still teaching, I’d probably have gone with the Magic Keyboard. And become one of those mystery people with an iPad workflow which flicks between laptop-ish and tablet at the drop of a hat. I think it’s perfect for creating a graphic novel, for instance. Script with the Magic Keyboard, draw with the pencil, put it all together with whatever is most comfortable. I’m really looking forward to what they do with the iPad Pro in the future. It’s my all-time favourite Apple product. Never thought I’d love an Apple thing more than my first ever black polycarbonate MacBook, but here we are.
