If you need to keep a straight, clean line between a painted surface and a varnished surface, you could try free-handing it the way the great painters do, or you could put down some masking tape and hope it doesn't bleed, but there's a better way.
This is a tip from Chuck Green from Ashland Massachusetts. And Chuck uses masking tape as well, but he goes one step further to make sure that the masking tape doesn't bleed through. We're going to make a mock-up here to show you how it works...

That system sounds great for perfectly flat surface, but how often is that the case...especially when dealing with any type of textured surface...like wall to ceiling or wall to baseboard. In my opinion there is still yet a better way. when dealing with two painted surfaces, rather than using caulk why not first paint the inside corner of your tape with the color your trying to protect...the tape will only bleed one time. So now let it sit for short time and go ahead and paint with what ever color you want...cause like i said...the tape will only bleed once....
@Marcoosianism
@Marcoosianism 7 жыл бұрын
The only problem with that is, the painter's tape must be removed before the paint is fully dry, yet you absolutely must wait for the first color to dry before painting with the final color or you're looking at a recipe for disaster. You can't just let it "sit for a short time" as you suggested.

I'm a scale modeller, and use a similar method when masking between two colours, for camo patterns etc. After the base colour, mask the camo pattern... then go over the edge of the masking tape with another thin coat of the base colour. However, let it dry fully before going over with the next colour - This seals the edge and as you say, it'll only bleed once. I s'pose it would probably also work if you want a sharp edge between two finishes of varnish/paint.

These are good tips. Of course a person could learn to be a professional level painter and just cut it in with a brush, do the things some here mention... but that's not the point. The point is that a person who doesn't paint for a living can paint their own walls without making it look like a home made fence.

On small projects I'll use this method, but large rooms I don't even use tape. A good angled brush, an understanding that you paint from inside the brush, pressing your brush against the surface and flaring the bristles out, and sneaking up to your line is the way to go. Save so much time not fussing with tape and caulk and it's easy to learn to do.

The trick is: cut a hole about a 16th of an inch in diameter in you tube, then you lay down that small bead on your tape-line. You can use your pinky or index finger to remove the excess caulking by pressing firmly on the tape-line. Let that dry about 1.5 to 2hrs and begin your project. This info was brought to you by a badass pro painter named KJ.

if you are painting a wall with white trim then lay your masking tape along the white edge of the trim and then take flat ceiling white and lightly go over the edge of the tape where the wall and tape meet. after 10 minutes or so the white paint will be dry and will have sealed the top of the tape from the coming wall color. if any ceiling white bled thru you wont notice it.....the wall color will not bleed onto the white paint cause the ceiling white sealed the tape.i use this on all my paintin

i've just started utilizing this little trick. seems like it could work very well. one thing....getting conflicting reports from 'different' people about whether to....'hurry and paint right after you've put the caulk on ( not letting anything "Dry)...and conversely, 'some saying...Let it Dry?? so which is it? my feeling is, if you let the caulk dry....when you pull the tape up, it's going to also 'pull back up'... some of the caulk on the wall, which is now 'under your paint'. so..you'll get a mess. thinking apply your tape, use a putty knife or something ( this guy used angled wood block...good enough...) and press the edge a bit, then quickly apply your 'clear' caulking, use very little, and wipe with your finger.... then, right away.... do your paint job. pull tape within minutes.....so the caulking didn't have time to dry to the tape and the wall. does this make sense? another tip is to...simply paint a thin layer or line, of the 'same wall paint' that is already present on the surface to be painted ( with 'new or different color).... and continue with steps 3 and 4. that way, your sealing your tape, with the actual paint that's already there before....then apply your new paint. in the latter case there, i guess you 'would then'....wait for your sealant-paint' to dry a bit, before applying different color.

Watch 'The Idaho Painter' 'Paint Bleeding Through Your Masking Tape?' There isn't a painting trick that guy doesn't know of, and real simple to follow. But your answer is already in this video of painting right away as the caulking is water based and I'm imagening your paint is too. Always peel tape away before drying, regardless of what paint you're using. Not sure the piece of wood here is required, but if you don't have the caulking, it'd help in removing the air from underneath the grain of the tape (which is where the paint bleeds into!) Just test on glass for an example, by putting some tape on it and then rubbing with your finger. The darker the tape gets as you rub (even with a fingernail) reveals how much air actually exists beneath tape in tiny amounts across the under surface of the tape. Works best to see when there's a good amount of light coming through the glass window and taping from inside the house.

+drummerfella 55 - Don't let it dry, here's why. It will "bridge" to the tape, making it possible to tear some of the tape when pulling it off. There's just no reason to let it dry before. When wet it prevents any bleeding under the tape perfectly well. Also as mentioned, he should have used Clear Caulk, that way any miniscule amount that does seep under a loose edge of the tape will be invisible. There's just no reason to put anything white on the wall in this paint job...

@mmoreno1984mm

With carpet I recommend you use. 2 inch tape. Preferable white because it's cheaper. Put the Tape about a quarter of and inch touching the baseboard then with a taping knife or painters knife tuck it underneath the baseboard. After you finish let it dry. For at least one day. Because if you remove when the epaint is fresh, particles. From the carpet will stick to the paint

you dont need to use chaulking to stop bleed through on tape. just a light coat of paint brushed on over the tape and the edge will stop bleed through..and if you have an already apinted surface or varnished surface you do not need tape anyways.. just keep a dam rag and wipe it off if you get any on it

i would never use chaulking at all.and i would barely ever use tape in the first lace, the only time i use tape is if i am painting something on a wall like a screen fro a projector .then again i have done it free hand as well and is just as good of results,,using chaulking is way over kill and does not need to be used.

Wrong way to peel the tape -- Needs to be pulled straight back on itself at 180-degree angle. Also, some of the quick release tapes have a sealant gel, so it's important to wet the edge before caulking.
