Nice video. BTW, I always use acrylics for washes, with very few problems. I apply them over enamel or lacquer paint or clear coat, and clean the excess with a Q-tip moistened with isopropyl alcohol. I find it less smelly and less messy to use than oil or enamel washes. Allow the wash to dry to touch (about 1/2 hour) and clean the excess before it cures.

it's very rare to hear a modeler mentioning their mistakes, let alone make a vid of it, big huge kudos! btw the end result is lovely.

After returning to model making after 30 years I found this to be one of the most useful videos I have looked at before cracking on with my X Wing kit. Thanks for sharing your mistakes, its good to see the warts and all process rather than the edited highlights that make it look all too easy.

The canopy is a cool color. Makes the x-wing look real. Like a replaced part on an old car. I know this videos old but have you guys seen x-wings offered by hot wheels 59.95. Each one gets detailed like this. I’d love to do a kit, but I’m handicapped. But this is a cool alternative to anyone’s collection.

8:08 I think it's rather gorgeous in the monotone grey , detail is so good . Also shiny finish will always look visually darker than matt -just one of those things - Great Job anyway !! STAR WARS fans will hate me , but this would make a great sort of "reverse what if ?" in American or Russian markings and camo (Grey and blue splinter .) is that sacriledge ?? It's your model - it can be whatever you want - it's a fantasy model after all ?

Amazing video

Original ILM models were first painted flat black then sprayed flat white.

The front end of that Bandai resistance X-wing becomes a bit of a mess IMO as minor alignment issues between the colored panels are compounded - personally things like that leave me wishing for a more straightforward kit, oriented toward the needs of model-makers who paint their models - like the Fine Molds. But it's a lovely kit, I look forward to seeing your build of it.

How about, when you're thinking of buying one of these, buy Bandi. I love Vallejo paint but am extremely disappointed by the primer. It doesn't etch to the plastic/styrene. I would recommend Vallejo paint, but definitely use Stynylrez primers, because they etch into even polished/buffed plastic/styrene and once set is nicely sandable both dry or wet.

So gloss coats can permanently darken the base color? I thought flat coating brings back most of the original brightness? It looked like the Ammo flat coat helped with this. The main gray coat looked a bit dark even before the gloss hit in my opinion. Still, great work and thanks for sharing.

Guys, I am going to be in the UK (specifically London) in mid September. Any suggestions on hobby shops to visit while I am there?

One major problem. The base color is WAY, WAY, WAY too dark. Even after you applied the decals, it wasn't too late to correct the color issue, because you should have made stencils in place of the decals anyway and still could have done that over the decals after repainted the correct color.

Have you tried the Flory models clay washes? Curious how well they would work with such fine panel lines.

Are there any advantages to using oil color washes vs acrylic, like say Citadel washes? Or is it just because oil color takes longer to dry and you can make corrections before it dries out?

Question; I have just applied Vallejo Acrylic Black Wash over a acrylic cleared paint job, on a model. I got busy doing other things for a couple of days. Now I can't remove wash with a damp paper towel. Crap. are there any options to remove it still?

I don't think your paintjob turned out so bad! The weathering I think helped cover the more serious issues. I definitely agree about the line paneling but live and learn, right? As far as what stands out to me --- the canopy looks too light but that's one area out of the entire build. Some careful masking of the clear plastic and hand painting of the canopy sills would probably take care of that without having to tear down the whole model and repaint whole thing. At least that's my opinion. This still seems like a nice little model overall. I have to be honest -- I'm NOT as crazy about Episode VII as others and it feels too much like a repeat of Episodes IV and V. If I were to build an X-Wing, I'd still prefer to build the classic T-65 X-Wing over the Resistance model. Likewise, I prefer the look of the classic Millennium Falcon with the round radar dish versus the lower-profile rectangular dish of Episode VII. The rectangular dish just doesn't look right to me. The Falcon is definitely a case where some assymetry helps the overall design, IMHO. The Resistance fighter itself is a reuse of Ralph McQuarrie's original X-Wing design down to the split of the massive engines in the wings. That was pointed out early on when the first publicity shots from Episode VII were leaked.
