The key of A can be very down home and tough. It can be rough and tumble. It can be driving and it can be lyrical. In this lesson I explore playing ideas, licks and techniques from a host of legendary bluesmen: Son House, Lightnin' Hopkins, Blind Boy Fuller, Rev. Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Lemon Jefferson. Playing styles from the delta of Mississippi to the streets of Durham, North Carolina to the juke joints of Dallas, Texas.
We also take a trip playing a blues in A minor. First we set up a fingerstyle melody and then we play off this with improvised lead lines. All in all, a deep exploration of fingerstyle blues guitar in the key of A.
A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. Each tune is taught phrase by phrase and played slowly on a split-screen.
Titles include: Blues For Son, Blues For Lightnin', Blues For the Carolinas, Big Bill Blues in A, Monday Morning Blues, Hop Scotch Blues and Hitting the Road With Jack

you know really we are very fortunate to be able to see this online and get a lesson of this caliber! It sounds like alot of students came up with the internet not knowing what it took to learn the guitar before the internet and tab in the magazines! I mean the proper notes are right in front of you and this is an absolutely great teacher who's given lessons around the world! I would have to knock on my teacher's door ten times just to get one lesson ( he gave me free lessons because he was a friend of my Mother's) but he wasn't always available! Most of the time he was rehearsing and I would sit in the corner and he would call the chords out to me or something like that. Not always one on one is my point. Then you have this and somebody questioning having to sit thru the tuning part!

Before the internet and tab I learned from a music book of an album with chord stamps that were rarely correct, listen to the song a million times on an album and figure it out. There were no guitar stores so I use plastic bread ties as a pick.

What a great teacher you are! Hearing and feeling the subtle dynamics, timing, syncopation and the tasteful use of vibrato, choice of chording and right handed techniques is not easy to teach. But you have nailed it. Great fun for this snowy Sunday!

And memorable! Grossman’s lessons are like conversations; he speaks in plain-English and this is what I believe makes his playing so accessible.

Spoiler alert: the last chord is an A 7th! :) Big surprise there. Hey, Stefan, back in like 1968 I borrowed a copy of that old record the Art of the Blues Guitar, and never returned it. So finally I stumbled across you here and I remembered that when I was a kid I stole your record off of this neighbor guy and that's how I learned to play. I later went to him and apologized, and thanked him for starting me out on guitar; he's died since then But I never got to thank you, good sir for your teaching. God bless you, old friend. The Arkansas Delta played just a important role as the others mentioned especially the Carolinas? Many bluesmen were born or either played in the Arkansas Delta.

Yes, I think the string tuning is still important...as important as the different chords and various positions they can be played in, is the EAR training. Blues musicians need to be able to play by ear, good grief, certainly not every folk blues song has been transcribed into tab. You have great teaching way, and inject suggestions like playing with commitment (yep, a string or two will be broke at times of "heavy hand" and the physics of sound production of a wavering string, nothing ventured, nothing gained) as I recall the line "you got to pay your dues if you want to play the blues"

J. Lucas Silva Given the body shape and D-45 style headstock I believe it’s a J-40; although mine has different fretboard inlays; likely just a difference in birthdays.

are there any scales which will help me learn this with a more natural understanding? I'm struggling to find a base. I've only ever taught myself and am a basic player, I know chords and how to fiddle, and have learnt some tab songs, but thats about it

If his post was titled "blues, for blues masters" it would be different, but hey, even an "amateur" wins in an "open" like golf, etc. ocassionally. Happy picking!
