Sand Smart with Sanding Grips
Using the right sandpaper can make a job faster and less tedious, and so can using sanding grips. Sanding grips are great for sanding round, curved or grooved surfaces without destroying crispness or the finer details.
To use them you simply wrap sandpaper around the profile and sand away.
Using these Contour Sanding Grips
I find myself usage these grips when detailing crown moldings and window stools. They protect my fingers from getting cut up, and do not dig into the detail of the molding or profile - it’s a professional way to get high quality detail sanding.
I usually cut down a sheet of sand paper to the width of the grips, there is no need to have special sizes paper for the grip set.
Rockler Double-Ended Grips
Rockler’s double-ended contour sanding blocks allow you to sand both concave and convex shapes. Each sanding grip are made out of rubber and have a convex profile on one end, and a concave profile, on the opposite end.
These flexible rubber are made from dense enough rubber that they hold shape really well yet can bend around simplex curves so you can sand all the details. The two ends are connected by a narrow flexible section that provides a comfortable finger grip and a good place to hold the grips.
Contour Sanding Grip Sizes
Contour Sanding Grip Set includes a total of six blocks with the following inside/outside diameters: 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8”, 3/4” and 7/8”. Diameters are molded into the rubber for easy selection.
(1) 3/8” Contour Sanding Grip
(1) 1/2” Contour Sanding Grip
(1) 5/8” Contour Sanding Grip
(1) 3/4” Contour Sanding Grip

Nice little run down! As a finish/trim carpenter we don’t do crazy amounts of sanding bc the painters are always hot on our tail. But I personally have my cordless orbital 60-240 grit & my old school sanding block ready to go. Wood chips, breaks, splinters ect & even with new construction houses aren’t square! Friggin poplar aye!? Especially on huge base and crown molding cup’n like all hell! As much as I dislike mdf it stays true always! I like to walk around after with some caulk, Alex flex spackle, wood filler/plastic wood/bondo and give a quick bead to miters and fill any excessive imperfections just to show my craftsmanship & set the painter up as my boss always says 😝 even a little titebond gap filler or ca glue gap filler for areas where I’m nervous the acclimation and or humidity change in the house could pop the joint a few months down the road. I mean some of the top level painters go the extra mile & take all the necessary steps to counter that but most don’t, even in these $5mill mansions I work. Half the time they don’t even file the nail holes completely 🤦🏽‍♂️ cutting corners I guess? Or as they tell me, we aren’t getting payed enough to do that. Horrible imo. I’m going to scoop a few of those bc they are small I could keep a little one in the pouch ect. Rockler is awsome too btw!

They work great. Thanks for the video. You were right on about how to use these. I just got a set very recently but mine came in different sizes and shapes for sanding and not just the same shape in different sizes. I really like my set for sanding my wood carvings.

this idea seems like it would last a little longer than sanding sponges. Sanding sponges are great for trim mouldings and woodworking, but they wear out super fast!

If you use those often then I am positive you can get strips of 3 inch sandpaper 50 yards long. You just rip a small piece and go. My drum sander takes 2 inch strips so I always have those in stock and it's way easier than to cut down a sheet or keep folding it over to find the "unused" side. Quick myth busting here those who sand a lot know this. People wrongly state that sandpaper goes down in grit as they are used. That's not true they just get used the grit doesn't change so using an old 80 grit as a 120 will leave you with a few deep scratches and more work.
