I am reading Warne's autobiography "No Spin" and just read Warne's description of his emotions as he was thrown the ball by AB and his fear that he might actually contribute to Australia's loss and how he backed himself to do well. His description of starting with a maiden over followed by the 3 wickets almost made me feel like one of the actual spectactors and then I tried searching youtube and ended up here. I could not appreciate technology truly until now. .Come March 4th, it will be the 1st death anniversary of Warne. Rest in peace mate. You have made mine and many other lives richer. Thanks Warney!!!

Warne had 1 test wicket when AB threw him the ball and had gone for 0 for 107 in the first innings here. Looks like he had flipper on his mind when he was bowling those massive leggies. One looked like a definite flipper but was too full. What a champion he was. Great move by AB too.

I was actually looking for the catch by AB (to dismiss Aravinda I think) which Warnie has written about in the book.

The first Test match I watched..What a brilliant performance by Sri Lanka in the first innings?! Sri Lanka dominated the game for 4 days but lost the game in the last session...Just to show that in Test cricket nothing is finalized until the bitter end..Fair play to Australian bowlers, especially Greg Matthews and a little known blonde fella called Shane Warne..

I can only think the selectors viewed him as a jack of all trades type player in his latter years Such as not good enough for a middle order batsman, not good enough as a frontline spinner Steve Waugh for example didn't bowl as much eventually to concentrate on his batting around the time Matthews international career ended

From a mate who got it from someone else - never been seen before on KZfaq, so I thought, why not upload! I think the Sri Lankan TV coverage back in the day wasn't too bad, not much worse than the BBC of the 80s, anyway!
@TheAusJT
@TheAusJT 4 жыл бұрын
@@saustfootball Yeah, I've heard a lot about this test, the greatest come from behind win in test history (Australia trailed by nearly 300 runs after the 1st innings). What's a joke is that Ch9 did broadcast Pakistan's tour of England a couple of months before this Australian tour of Sri Lanka, but couldn't be half-arsed with international tours outside of England (excluding the 1991 tour of West Indies, and 1994 tour of South Africa). And tv coverage of matches in Sri Lanka and Pakistan pre-1996 World Cup was very ordinary (coverage of matches in India was also ordinary until Sky Sports produced the 1993 English tour of India broadcast and from that point onwards the tv quality of matches in India starting picking up quite substantially), makes the BBC coverage of the '70s look like gold standard, and goes to show how far Kerry Packer was ahead of the game when Ch9 got tv rights to matches in Australia back in the late '70s. It's hard to believe before that, the BCCI used to have to pay the tv broadcaster to televise matches! That'd be unthinkable these days. However, watching highlights of the 1987 World Cup the other day and it was very grainy and amateur, looked like a kindergarten student's school project!
@TheAusJT
@TheAusJT 4 жыл бұрын
@@saustfootball Oh, regarding this '92 tour of Sri Lanka, the Aussies also played 3 ODIs. The last ODI was the first day/nighter ever held in Sri Lanka, and I read in a Wisden article that the Aussies wore a salmon-colored jersey, and were nicknamed the "Pink Panthers" for that match. Would be interested to see if anyone's got footage or photos from that match, as the salmon-colored jersey (the only time the Aussies have ever worn that color in ODIs) is a far cry from the traditional canary yellow that's always been synonymous with the Aussies since the early years of World Series cricket.

Sri Lanka could have easily won this game had they been at least a bit more careful during the final 2 sessions, especially after they reached 127/2 or so, needing only 50+ runs with 8 wickets in hand with Aravinda De Silva and Gurusinghe at the crease, they had an ample amount of overs left to do it. The loss of De Silva for 30+ runs due to an utterly careless/reckless stroke started the collapse which ruined an otherwise excellent game for Sri Lanka. Gurusinghe stayed unbeaten despite the wickets falling at the other end, but it had been a very slow innings scoring 30+ runs in 100+ deliveries or so. The standout performances in the first innings which included Romesh Kaluwitharana's glorious hundred in his debut innings (132* in 150+ balls with 26 boundaries ....) were all in vain. This is the innings which may have saved Shane Warne's career, his 3 wickets (3/11) in this innings along with Greig Mathew's 4 really turned the game upside down during its final stages. Until then, if my memory serves me right, Warne had taken only 1 wicket after conceding 500+ runs in his initial few tests .... This is the era when 5 day tests spanned across 6 days including a rest/spare day too in the middle ....

@@AsadMalik-qi9gx Yes, Gurusinghe had made some runs here in this game too, but had not batted with the ultimate target in mind, rather he had been too slow to get going and couldn't take any control over the situation amidst the collapse. That’s right, Warne had been smashed around by India in his debut test match in the 1991/92 series. He took 1 wicket for over 100 runs and he was given a hard welcome to test cricket by Ravi Shastri, Tendulkar etc. Warne always said that this game was the start of his test career properly.
