I love ALL the birds! Thank you Ellen for showing work done using inexpensive paper that most of us can afford. Most professionals eschew anything but 100% cotton and I find that very discouraging because I cannot afford that and it makes me believe that art created on Canson is not worth doing. Further, I am a beginning artist and much of my work is practice, not worth keeping in many ways - except as a way to measure my own growth and to enjoy the process of learning so spending a small fortune on Arches (or similar) is not even reasonable. I appreciate you showing us that beautiful work can still be achieved with less expensive supplies.

I agree. I have been painting a year. I am trying to buy better quality paper, not arches yet but the higher quality of Canson, or Fabrio. The quality of paper really does make the difference. The problem is I never know when my practice come out really nice and I want ot frame or give to someone. I do love her sketch books.

I LOVE the birds! What a great idea, filling them in with lines, dots, etc. I haven't painted birds or animals because I can't get them to look like they "should", LOL I'll have to try this. Thanks!

I have to agree with Michael in every way. I started painting almost 15 years ago, that was before KZfaq tutorial videos. I stopped painting after about 2 years due to illness but have recently taken it up again. I bought some more expensive cotton paper but can honestly say that my paintings from way back weren’t so bad on cheap 185gsm or 220gsm. I just can’t seem to get my mojo back and think I expect too much from myself. I love watching Ellen paint, so casually and so freely. I’m retired now but wish I had discovered watercolour painting way back. I love these sketch book tours, they have inspired me. Thank you Ellen from Down Under. R.

I’m amazed at how nice your paintings look on the canson paper. So many of the KZfaq videos talk about Canson paper being terrible and how real artists would never use it. Your art looks amazing so it just goes to show that paper isn’t as important as skill. I can’t afford to use good paper while I’m learning. I go through a Canson watercolor book a week.

I use Canson for large format painting and can't complain about it at all. Like many people, I can at best afford medium range supplies but I have also learned that EVERY paper is different. It's worth spending the time to experiment and getting to know how paper and paint react to one another.

I have a Strathmore book that is awesome and is thick and absorbent. It’s old maybe they don’t make them as well now

I find that the Canson sketchbook paper is OK if you don’t use too much water. A wet-on-wet painting would really make the paper buckle, bit if you do drawings or mixed media with wet-on-dry, they are fine.

@@SteviePaints I have found that if I spritz both the front and back sides and spread it with brush or just soak both sides and quickly pat with a paper towel works wonders. I call this priming the paper. It no longer buckles….no taping needed, the paint also reacts and goes on better. Sometimes I literally soak it until soppy on both sides. Sometimes more lightly with the spritz bottle. Play around with it, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Thanks for taking us along... even when painting in a sketchbook i often get nervous, as i don't want to ruin it. But i am working on myself to let go and just enjoy the process, and if i really hate the outcome i can always just toss it away and learn what not to do.

I have really just got into sketchbooks, I use both sides if I can, depending on what I am doing. I use multimedia books, sometimes they buckle but using a sketchbook has allowed me to play and not be precious. It also takes off the pressure that you are not looking to do a finished peice.

Really nice what you have done. I have painted daily, not on a sketchbook, but on small pieces of paper. They look really nice. And used some of them as cards for different occasions. But your idea is an excellent idea.

Thank you for sharing your sketchbook. I use the same one and love it because it's cheap and I can experiment. Some of my favorite creations are in my sketchbook. You are my favorite watercolorist to watch, you teach in a very user friendly way and you can be funny as hell. Love your sound effects!

I paint on my fabric, I painted a face and a theme on my fabric. I used some gesso and some acrylics. Used some fabric pens .My ladies as I call them help me when I want to express what is going on with me either with fabric or fabric painting. It is fun.

Wow Ellen! These are awesome. Love the pigs! My brushes and paints came today. I got the Neptune oval wash brush and the round. A few colors of paints that you use too. Had to have that peacock blue. Can’t wait to play with them. Perfect timing for this video. I have some of that paper. Would like to be able to find some Arches that I could afford. The Bee paper was sold out. Would love to see a video of your professional things that are out there in the markets. Would be fun to see if I could find some of the things you design. I love your work so much. I loved this!! I made the mistake of buying Canson XL mixed media paper instead. It’s not even as nice as that! I totally believe in practicing on the cheaper first. TFS! ❤️

I am inspired to start a sketchbook for learning. Although I have expensive wc paper, I also have this Canson 7x10 size and I am going to give it a go! Breakthrough for me. Arches intimidates me😅
